New York Giants' Abdul Carter addresses being decleated vs. Jets
New York Giants rookie edge rusher Abdul Carter has looked otherworldly since entering the league, dominating spring and summer workouts, and making grown men look like boys in both practices and games. But one constant forever remains the same in the NFL: Every rookie will have their "welcome to the league" moment. For Carter, that moment came on Saturday night against the New York Jets when he was completely decleated by tight end Stone Smartt and then buried by offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor. It was a humbling yet frustrating moment for Carter, who wasn't interested in discussing it after the game. "It happens, but we got the win. That's all I'm worried about," he told reporters. "(Expletive) just happens on the football field, but we got the win, so we're good." Carter was limited to just 19 snaps in his MetLife Stadium debut, recording only a single tackle. His overall impact was minimal given the Jets' reliance on the run, and his lone highlight was a negative. That left the rookie salivating for a full game. "I didn't get to play a full game. I just can't wait to play a full game, but it was fun," he said. "That's going to come. I'm patient. Right now, in preseason, we've got things that I can't control, so I've just got to control what I can control. When I'm in there, just do what I do best." Carter and the Giants will return to the practice field on Tuesday before wrapping up the preseason on Thursday night against the New England Patriots. After that, Carter will get his wish and finally suit up for a full NFL game, hoping to avoid the same mistakes he made against the Jets on Saturday night. Jayden Daniels' deep ball appears to be in midseason form
The Washington Commanders received some good news on Saturday when top wide receiver Terry McLaurin was activated from the physically unable to perform list. The nature of McLaurin's injury is debatable. Remember, he initially held out of training camp due to a contract dispute with the team, before reporting after four days. By reporting, he could no longer be fined, so the Commanders placed him on the PUP list, citing an ankle injury. Now, Washington will ramp up McLaurin's physical activity to get him ready for Week 1. So, while the contract saga continues, McLaurin has returned to practice, which is good news for everyone. Meanwhile, with McLaurin out, quarterback Jayden Daniels has spent that time building a rapport with Deebo Samuel. The former Pro Bowl wideout has looked excellent since arriving in the spring and seems poised for a big season in the burgundy and gold. Samuel is known for his ability after the catch. He immediately turns into a running back once the ball is in his hands and is one of the toughest players in the NFL to tackle. Since arriving in Washington, the Commanders have used Samuel everywhere, and he appears to be on the same page with Daniels in the deep passing game. Check out this gem from Saturday's practice: Daniels is known for his accuracy, specifically with the deep ball. Last season, Daniels and McLaurin frequently connected down the field, and the Commanders hope that connection resumes once McLaurin is back on the field. All appears fine on Daniels's end. Tigers' A.J. Hinch makes scathing comments on Tommy Kahnle's struggles
Tigers' A.J. Hinch makes scathing comments on Tommy Kahnle's struggles originally appeared on The Sporting News The Detroit Tigers have been floundering a bit over the last month of baseball. After the All-Star break, the Tigers' lead in the AL Central has dropped to just 6.5 games over the Cleveland Guardians. While things have been a bit better as of late, with back-to-back series wins over the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Angels, there's one player whose struggles have led to a few of the team's losses during their rough last month. Evan Woodberry of MLive Media Group shared comments from Tigers manager A.J. Hinch on the struggles of Tommy Kahnle in recent weeks. Hinch's comments were scathing, and he didn't hold back in criticizing the veteran reliever. "He doesn't get to pitch for free," Hinch said of Kahnle. "The situation is going to dictate whether the innings are there for him. We try to get him in as low-leverage or low-pressure situations as possible so he can work on things... But we've got to compete on the field. This is not practice." It's a brutal string of comments from Hinch on Kahnle. The 36-year-old right-hander started off the year strong, but has cratered in recent outings. Through June, across 34 games, he had a 1.77 ERA, eight saves, 11 holds, and allowed four home runs while striking out 31 and walking nine. His beginning of the year was great, but across the next 15 outings, he's been significantly worse. In less than half the outings he had to begin the year, he's allowed four home runs, walked 13, struck out just eight, and has an ERA of 16.36. While the comments from Hinch are brutal for Kahnle, based on his performance, it's not unwarranted. Kahnle has been one of the worst relievers in baseball since the beginning of July, and his season ERA jumped up to 5.27 after such a brutal stretch. There could be a reason behind his struggles this season: his usage. He's pitched 46.2 innings this season, which is the most he's pitched since 2019 with the New York Yankees. MORE: Tigers top prospects could be impacted by $130 million Roman Anthony Red Sox contract With a month and a half of the 2025 season left, he's already pitched the fourth-most innings he has in a season in his career. Combined with his age, the Tigers reliever could be burnt out. The 11-year veteran might not be in his best shape come the postseason if he continues to pitch. Instead of trotting him out there, the Tigers should find a way to dramatically limit his innings. When he's on, he's a very solid reliever. But his struggles lately are too much, as Hinch's comments indicate he's just about done experimenting with Kahnle. The veteran reliever's struggles are too detrimental, and the Tigers could pivot in another direction. It's a tough decision, especially after how great he was to begin the year. But, based on Hinch's comments, Kahnle is on thin ice in Detroit and could see his time with the team come to an end soon.
