WASHINGTON (AP) — Donovan Newby had 17 points, Noah Ross scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and UNC Wilmington denied No. 12 seed Delaware a historic end to the tournament with a 76-72 victory on Tuesday night in the Coastal Athletic Association championship game.
Second-seeded UNC Wilmington (27-7) secured its league-record seventh CAA title since the 1982-83 season — and its first since capturing back-to-back titles in 2016 and '17.
Delaware (16-20) entered the tournament on a six-game losing streak, including a 30-point loss to UNCW in the regular-season finale. The Blue Hens then rattled off four wins for a chance at becoming just the third team in Division I men's history to win five games in five days en route to a conference title.
Newby made four straight free throws in the final 13.8 seconds, the last two after freshman Izaiah Pasha made a 3-pointer for Delaware to get within 74-72. Newby was a perfect 8 for 8 at the stripe.

Bo Montgomery added 13 points and Khamari McGriff had 10 for UNCW.
Pasha led Delaware with 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, and Niels Lane added 20 points. Cavan Reilly scored 13 and John Camden 12.
UNCW jumped out to a 22-10 lead after 13 minutes as Delaware started the game by making just 3 of 19 shots. But the Blue Hens got back in it by making five straight shots to begin a 16-3 run to get within 31-28 with 1:17 left.
John Camden sank a contested 3-pointer with 15:30 left in the second half to give Delaware its first lead, 41-40, since it was 5-4.

(AP Photo/Joan Monfort) NYON, Switzerland (AP) — World champion Spain will continue its defense of the UEFA Women's Nations League title against Sweden in the semifinals after the draw was made on Friday. Spain will host the first leg on Oct. 24 and the return is four days later in Sweden. Advertisement Germany hosts France first in the other semifinal played on the same dates. France was beaten by Spain 2-0 in Seville in the inaugural final last year. The 2025 final is scheduled over two legs, on Nov. 28 and Dec. 2. All four teams advanced to the finals stage by finishing atop groups that started in February and finished this week — effectively as warmups for the Women's European Championship. Only France won six straight games. First, all four head to the 16-team Euro 2025 that starts on July 2 in Switzerland. Germany and Sweden are in the same Euros group. France is in a tough group with the past two European champions, England and the Netherlands. Spain, the 2023 Women's World Cup winner, starts its Euro 2025 campaign against Portugal on July 3 in Bern. ___ AP soccer:

Carlos Alcaraz to defend French Open title in final as Lorenzo Musetti retires
Carlos Alcaraz will defend his French Open title on Sunday after Lorenzo Musetti retired from their semi-final. Italian Musetti won the first set and was playing some exquisite tennis under the roof on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Advertisement But the 23-year-old had treatment on his leg during a one-sided third set and called it a day after Alcaraz won nine games in a row with the score 4-6 7-6 (3) 6-0 2-0. Lorenzo Musetti needed medical treatment (Aurelien Morissard/AP) There were echoes of a match here four years ago when Musetti retired against Novak Djokovic at 4-0 down in the fifth, later saying he was not injured but that he quit because he was 'not able to win a point'. Alcaraz, who will bid for a fifth grand slam title on Sunday, said: 'It is never great getting through like this. 'Lorenzo is a great player. He has had an incredible clay season. He's one of the few players who has achieved the semi-finals. I wish him all the best and a quick recovery. Advertisement 'The first two sets were really tough. I had chances to break his serve in the match and I couldn't make the most of it. 'He was playing great tennis. When I won the second set, there was relief. In the third I knew what I had to do – pushing him to the limit and trying to be aggressive. 'I was more calm and I could see this more clearly and I could play great tennis.' An exciting match looked on the cards when at 5-4 Musetti, who had not previously threatened the Alcaraz serve, suddenly broke to take the first set. Alcaraz served for the second set but the tension he was feeling was palpable as Musetti broke straight back. However, Alcaraz reset in the tie-break and, although Musetti saved two set points, he dumped a third into the net. Advertisement Musetti planted his hand onto his face after a bad miss handed the initiative to Alcaraz, who grabbed the early break in the third. Suddenly the shackles were off for Alcaraz while Musetti was labouring, winning just five points as the set disappeared over the horizon. The eighth seed had received treatment on his left leg but was still clearly hindered and when Alcaraz broke for 2-0 in the fourth, he decided he had had enough.

Arise Sir David! Beckham to be awarded a knighthood by King Charles, according to media reports
Associated Press LONDON (AP) — David Beckham, the former England soccer captain who has been an ambassador for the U.N. children's fund for two decades, is to receive a knighthood in next week's honors list from King Charles III, according to U.K. media reports Friday. Without citing sources, the BBC said Beckham is set to receive further recognition both for his soccer career, and his contributions to British society. The knighthood will make Beckham 'Sir David' while his wife since 1999, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, will become 'Lady Beckham.' In 2003, Beckham was awarded the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, for services to soccer. Victoria Beckham got the same honor for services to the fashion industry in a later New Year Honours list. Honors are awarded twice a year, once at New Year's, and then in June to mark the king's birthday. They are mostly made on the recommendation of the government, though the monarch has input too. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office would not confirm the press reports, as is custom. Buckingham Palace declined to comment. The Associated Press has not been able to independently confirm the award of the knighthood, which was first reported in The Sun tabloid newspaper. In video footage published by The Sun from the Chelsea Flower Show earlier this month, the king is seen asking Beckham if he 'received his 50th birthday present.' The King appeared to say 'I'm glad it got to you,' with Beckham responding: 'It was incredible, thank you, it was very kind.' Beckham and the king have crossed paths on numerous occasions, including at state functions. Last year, Beckham became an ambassador for The King's Foundation, an educational and sustainability charity Charles launched in 1990. Beckham, who is clearly a patriot, is the only English soccer player to score at three different World Cups and his illustrious career included the treble-winning campaign of 1999, when Manchester United won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League. With 115 appearances for the England national team, Beckham is third in the all-time list. He also captained the side on 59 occasions. After leaving Manchester United 2003, Beckham played for Real Madrid, Los Angeles Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain. He now co-owns the MLS team Inter Miami. His career wasn't always a high, though. After the 1998 World Cup in France, Beckham was widely vilified for his petulant kick of Argentina player Diego Simeone, which saw him sent off. Many fans blamed him for England's exit. In 2023's Netflix documentary series 'Beckham,' he described the abuse he experienced, which included an effigy of him hanging from a noose outside a London pub. 'I knew it was bad at the time, but going over that whole thing was quite a tough one,' he told the AP. The four-part documentary series about Beckham's life and professional career scored him an Emmy in 2024 for outstanding documentary or non-fiction series. Beckham has been a style icon and celebrity and has been a prominent supporter of charities, including UNICEF, which created 'The David Beckham UNICEF Fund' in 2015 to mark a decade's partnership between the two. Beckham also played a pivotal role in London being awarded the Summer Olympic Games in 2012. If the knighthood is confirmed, Beckham would join an elite group of British soccer players to have been knighted, including England's 1966 World Cup winners, Geoff Hurst and Bobby Charlton, and Scotland's Kenny Dalglish. recommended in this topic
