This Is the No. 1 Island Destination for 2025, According to Expedia—and It Ranked for Its Year-round Sun
On Tuesday, the travel booking site released its 2025 Island Hot List, which it calls "the definitive guide to island travel based on verified data and traveler insights." And right off the bat, it shared that the global interest for island getaways is up an average of 30 percent year-over-year.
This year, Aruba made the list, with Expedia noting it's "best for year-round sun," while Bali, Indonesia, took home a spot thanks to being the "best for relaxation." They're joined by the Dominican Republic, which Expedia says is best for adventure, Fiji, which is best for community, Jamaica, as it's best for culture, and Koh Samui, Thailand, which is best for affordable luxury.
The list, Expedia explained, was compiled using comprehensive data on global traveler interest, local accommodation rates, flight and lodging accessibility, the quality of hotels (based on traveler reviews and guest experience ratings), local weather patterns, general tourism appeal, and traveler safety.
'Powered by real traveler data, the Expedia Island Hot List gives travelers the inspiration they need to plan a smarter island escape,' Melanie Fish, head of Expedia Group brands public relations, shared in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure .
The Maldives also made the list thanks to being the best for romance, while Oahu, Hawaii, was named best for surfing, Paros, Greece, for being the best for nightlife, and Sardinia, Italy, as the best island for food Lovers.
'We are honored that the pearl of the China Sea, Koh Samui, has been recognized among the top 10 Expedia Island Hot List," Narin Tijayang, the former executive director of Koh Samui Office, Tourism Authority of Thailand, shared. "[It's] a testament to the breathtaking beauty and vibrant culture of our island. Koh Samui, with its pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and warm hospitality, stands ready to welcome travelers from around the world to experience the very best of Thai island life." (Thailand is T+L's 2025 Destination of the Year.)
Beyond the global hotspots, Expedia also pulled data on the islands with the biggest search increases from U.S.-based travelers. Topping the list is Madeira in Portugal, with a 45 percent increase in interest, followed by Nantucket (+40 percent), St. Thomas (+30 percent), Palm Beach (+30 percent), and Turks and Caicos, which saw 10 percent growth in search.
Expedia noted that the "optimum time" to visit each place varies; however, it added that if you need a closer range, September is, on average, the prime time for an island getaway. That's usually the shoulder season for island destinations, which offers more affordability and a wider range of available hotel room options. It also added that you can turn on the Flight Alerts tool on its app to track pricing and get notified when fares dip, so you can book that island getaway you so richly deserve.

‘The Colonel and the King' revises our view of Elvis's right-hand man
Early on in life, Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk knew that he needed to leave. Born in the Netherlands in 1909, he was a strange, enchanted boy, possessed with a wild imagination and overcome with wanderlust — the fifth of nine children, he was loved by his brothers and sisters and his mother, but essentially rejected by his mirthless father, a deep and lingering wound that would reverberate through his remarkable life. By his own estimation, he ran away from home 17 times, beginning at a young age and through adolescence. Eventually his parents stopped looking for him; given their obligations and challenging economic circumstances, it's somewhat difficult to blame them. His adventures during those absences were said to be far-flung and filled with the illicit thrills of traveling circuses and gypsy caravans. He would return home and dazzle his siblings with stories, until finally he never returned again.

These Are the Most Underrated Places to Celebrate Your Next Milestone, According to a Travel Advisor
The best destinations aren't always the most popular ones. When it comes to celebrating major milestone—whether it's a birthday, your honeymoon, or retirement— under-the-radar spots take the lead. As a lifelong traveler who plans destination celebrations for a living, I know that going somewhere out of the ordinary makes for a truly one-of-a-kind experience—think bioluminescent lagoons or towering baobab trees. Here are some of my favorite underrated destinations, plus top hotels at each. Madagascar Madagascar is the ultimate combination of untouched natural beauty and beachy luxury. Isolated from the African continent, the island has evolved on its own terms, giving rise to wildlife found nowhere else on Earth—like the aye-aye, lemurs, and rare species of chameleons. The best way to take in the otherworldly landscapes is from above, which is exactly how an arrival at luxury resort Miavana by Time + Tide begins:with a cinematic helicopter ride over ancient red earth, touching down on a private island edged by clear blue waters. With room for up to 40 guests, it's an extraordinary place to gather, but what makes it unforgettable is its in-house cultural center. There, guests can learn about the island's deep Indonesian roots, shaped by centuries of migration, trade, and myth. On the other side of the island, Tsara Komba and Voaara offer more bohemian stays. They're relaxed, artistic, and rooted in nature, yet undeniably well-appointed. African Safaris A bush dining set up by Arijiju Retreat. Tom Martienssen/Arijiju Retreat For travelers seeking intimacy with scale, Africa's safari lodges are the ultimate all-inclusive. In Kenya's Borana Conservancy, I love Arijiju and Lengishu House—stays that marry design and conservation, offering horseback safaris and community visits alongside world-class chefs and wellness teams. Botswana delivers a cinematic range of settings, from the salt pans near Jack's Camp to the Okavango's lush waterways surrounding Xigera Safari Lodge, or the combination of land and water safari at Wilderness Duma Tau. In Namibia, Shipwreck Lodge in the desolate Skeleton Coast National Park and the secluded Hoanib Valley Camp are oases of luxury in otherworldly settings. They're hauntingly beautiful, comfortable, and conservation-focused. Wine Country The wine cellar at La Chartreuse de Cos d'Estournel. La Chartreuse de Cos d'Estournel Celebrations in wine regions are a natural pairing. Imagine starting with a bubbly toast at the Royal Champagne—a T+L reader favorite in Champillon, France, a tiny village less than an hour from Paris—followed by dinner in the vaulted cellar at Château de la Commaraine. Or head to Bordeaux for a sleek takeover of La Chartreuse de Cos d'Estournel, an eight-bedroom house where modern art and old-world elegance collide amongst renowned vineyards. In South Africa's Franschhoek Valley, celebratory wine trips take on a restorative quality. At Sterrekopje Farm, guests are invited to slow down through biodynamic farming, communal feasts, and holistic rituals. La Residence's Franschoekk House offers an opulent villa setting with butler services for a secluded and spectacular fête. Underrated Cities The Suite Royale at the Royal Mansour Casablanca. Royal Mansour Casablanca Cities like Cape Town and Casablanca offer the cosmopolitan energy of your go-to cities, but they have just enough edge and cultural depth to feel truly unique. Casablanca is quietly cool: there, elegant Art Deco design meets North African timelessness. A few nights at the timeless Royal Mansour Casablanca paired with live jazz, spice market strolls, and rooftop sunsets makes for a buzzy, energetic trip. Cape Town, too, balances urban energy with natural grandeur. With exclusive-use accommodations like Villa Leeukoppie or Ellerman House as your home base, paired with hikes up the iconic trails of Lion's Head and a behind-the-scenes look at Cape Town's influential contemporary art scene, your celebration will feel both grounded and glamorous. The Ends of the Earth An overhead of White Desert's pods in Antarctica. White Desert For the group that's done it all, it's time to head to the Earth's last frontiers. Work with a travel agency to charter your very own expedition vessel to the poles: whether the fjords of the Arctic to toast champagne under the midnight sun, or Antarctica to chase the aurora australis. The voyages are cinematic and deeply intimate. Similarly, White Desert's private polar pods in Antarctica reframe luxury in stark, extraordinary terms, redefining what's possible at the edge of the world. Air Canada Reaps The Benefit Of The 'Trump Slump' In U.S. Travel
Recent data indicates that the United States is experiencing a sharp decline in international visitors in 2025. While the fall is seen from visitors flying in from many countries, including the U.K., it is particularly pronounced along the land border with Canada. Conversely, Canada's tourism industry has been flourishing, with many visitors opting for the country as an alternative to the U.S. According to a study by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the U.S. is the only country among 184 to project a decline in foreign visitor spending for 2025. This is in part likely due to several news stories reported worldwide of tourists being detained and deported after the new stricter immigration and travel policies. Potential visitors have cited a feeling of unease about visiting the US, even if they have all the correct paperwork. U.K. residents make up the largest number of overseas visitors to the U.S., with 3.9 million a year. In April 2025, The Guardian reported that the number of U.K. residents visiting the U.S. decreased by 14.3% in March 2025 compared to the same month in 2024. However, the WTTC projects Canada's travel and tourism sector will reach record levels this year, with a strong domestic market and a steady recovery in international travelers. Canadian travel overseas outside the U.S. has also seen an increase as well as domestic travel. August 2025 is projected to see the highest number of Europe to Canada flights on record equating to over 1.2 million seats. Flights between Europe and Canada are up 5% on August 2024 levels, while flights are also up 14% compared to pre-pandemic (August 2019) according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. Air Canada Boeing 737 Max departing Vancouver International Airport against a snowy mountain during sunrise. Date: Dec 19, 2021 getty Canada's flag carrier, Air Canada, has spurred this market expansion, adding the highest number of Europe-Canada summer flights year-on-year. The airline has added an additional 112 flights from Europe to Canada this August versus the same period in 2024 - equating to over 34,500 extra one-way seats during the month. Air Canada's peak August schedule between Europe and Canada is 8% larger than August 2024. As well as increasing frequencies to established destinations, the airline has also introduced five new transatlantic routes: Edinburgh to Montréal Trudeau London Heathrow to Ottawa Naples to Montréal Trudeau Prague to Toronto-Pearson Porto to Montréal Trudeau 'Canada is seeing strong interest from travellers in our target overseas markets, especially from the UK. Guests from Europe and the UK are particularly attracted to Canada's awe-inspiring landscapes and culturally rich experiences, as well as the country's reputation of being safe and welcoming,' said Meaghan Ferrigno, Senior Vice President, CFO and Chief Data & Analytics Officer, Destination Canada. The United Kingdom has been Air Canada's top-performing European market this year, with travel interest from the U.K. to Canada remaining above historical levels. This is reflected in the 7% increase in air arrivals from the U.K. to Canada in June 2025 compared to the same time last year. Air Canada's refurbished Maple Leaf Lounge London Heathrow Airport. Michele Robson Air Canada has also been investing in the customer experience with a refurbishment of its Maple Leaf lounge at London Heathrow airport including updated lighting, new artwork by Nicolas Ruel, and increased seating capacity. The lounge features a staffed bar for cocktails and drinks as well as showers. Travelers can also use the Star Alliance arrival lounge when arriving at Heathrow airport on Air Canada. The changes are part of a broader plan to improve the airline's lounges by adding nine new lounges, renovating eight, and increasing lounge capacity by 43 per cent. The first deliveries are expected in early 2026. With a focus on more premium seats, the aircraft will feature a new layout, which is likely to include a business plus product from the layouts shared at its investor day.
