New Delhi: The government's plan to overhaul the Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure will give Indian consumers more disposable income, potentially boosting demand and overall consumption in the economy, said Najib Shah, former Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) on Saturday. The Central government has mulled reducing the current four-slab structure into two primary rates -- 5 per cent and 18 per cent -- while introducing a special 40 per cent slab for luxury and sin goods. The proposal came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, said that the next generation reforms in GST will be unveiled by Diwali, which will provide "substantial" tax relief to the common man and benefit small businesses. 'The 12 per cent with 18 per cent can be merged into a 15-16 per cent slab, and the 28 per cent rate possibly moving to 30 per cent once the cess is removed in March 2026,' he added. Shah said that the reduced multiplicity of rates and lower tax slabs should leave more disposable income with consumers, potentially boosting demand and overall consumption in the economy. The expert noted that 'GST reforms should lead to lower prices, smoother credit flow, resolution of tax inversion issues, and reduced disputes, ultimately cutting costs for producers and consumers alike'. Government collections should not be adversely affected while still offering relief to consumers. Further, small and medium enterprises stand to gain significantly from simplified tax rates, lower compliance burdens, and improved access to seamless credit within the GST framework. Calling the GST reforms 'long overdue', Shah told IANS that he sees them as 'a transformative step that will strengthen the tax system, stimulate growth, and reinforce India's position as a prime investment destination'. As per the government proposal, likely, around 99 per cent of items currently taxed at 12 per cent are expected to shift to the 5 per cent bracket, while 90 per cent of goods in the 28 per cent slab, including white goods, will move to 18 per cent. "Finalising these new rates will require crucial GST Council meetings, followed by GST Network readiness to ensure smooth and seamless execution nationwide," Shah said. Shah also exuded optimism at S&P's and RBI's positive outlook on India's stable GDP growth projection of 6.5 per cent, the highest among major economies. "While US tariffs could affect certain labour-intensive exports, their overall impact on GDP will be minimal as exports to the US constitute only about 2 per cent of India's economy," he told IANS. India must seek alternative export destinations and enhance competitiveness to offset any impact from US tariffs, supported by targeted policy measures. India's multiple FTAs and CEPAs -- UK already finalised and EU nearing completion -- will not only reduce trade barriers but also attract significant foreign investment, he noted.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Condemning what he termed a calculated distortion of history, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for using his Independence Day address to glorify RSS and V D Savarkar. 'The attempt to portray the RSS, which was banned following Gandhi's assassination and V D Savarkar, who stood trial in the murder conspiracy, as major contributors of Indian independence is a blatant distortion of history. Choosing Independence Day to glorify those who served the British amounts to insulting our freedom struggle,' said the chief minister. Pinarayi Vijayan said no such shameful act can whitewash the RSS, which he described as a communal organisation with a divisive past. He called the Prime Minister's act of praising the RSS on a day that symbolises national unity 'show of contempt for the very day'. Citing the Union Ministry of Petroleum's Independence Day greeting card that placed Savarkar's image above Mahatma Gandhi's, the CM said this was part of a larger conspiracy. 'This anxiety comes from fear of the true history of India's freedom struggle,' he said. He recalled that India's independence movement was one that saw people of every caste, religion, language, and culture standing together. 'In contrast, the RSS wore the cloak of espionage,' he added.

In a first, Indian tricolour hoisted atop Seattle's iconic Space Needle
The Indian tricolour was hoisted at Seattle's iconic 605-feet-tall Space Needle on India's 79th Independence Day, the first time that a foreign nation's flag was raised at the popular American destination. Consul General of India in Seattle Prakash Gupta along with Mayor of Seattle Bruce Harrell and other select dignitaries from the Seattle city leadership, joined the historic and landmark occasion. "No greater honour than this ! Raising the Tiranga on top of Seattle skyline at Space Needle," Gupta said in a post on X, along with a video of the tricolour flying high atop the iconic Seattle monument with sprawling views of the city below. Calling the commemoration a "historic first in Seattle", the Consulate General of India in Seattle said the celebration underscored the contributions of the Indian-American diaspora in shaping the city's journey as a tech hub in the US Pacific Northwest. Later, a community reception was hosted by the Consulate at the scenic Kerry Park, with India's flag on top of the Space Needle in the backdrop. A large number of Indian-American community members turned up to witness the historic sight, the Consulate said in a press release. The reception was attended by several dignitaries including US Congressman Adam Smith, Chief Justice of the Washington Supreme Court Debra Stephens, Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho and Superintendent/Director of Seattle Parks and Recreation AP Diaz. Addressing the gathering, Smith welcomed the historic celebration, noting that the Indian tricolour's hoisting atop the Space Needle is a tribute to the region's diversity and the strong bonds between India and the Pacific Northwest. In a special gesture to honour India's Independence Day in the Greater Seattle area, King County, which covers 39 cities, along with Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma and Bellevue, issued official proclamations marking August 15 as India Day. Separately, several iconic buildings across Seattle were also lit up in the Indian tricolours. These included the Lumen Stadium, T-Mobile Stadium, Westin, Seattle Great Wheel and Space Needle. The Indian flag was also hoisted at the prestigious Tacoma Dome, Tacoma City Hall and at the Headquarters of Tacoma Police and Fire Departments, the Consulate said. A vibrant cultural extravaganza featuring national anthems, along with dance performances showcasing the rich diversity of Indian art forms as well as a poetic recital by renowned artist and actor Piyush Mishra also enthralled those attending the special celebrations.
