KUCHING (April 24): Sarawak has recorded its best-ever performance in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, achieving a State Average Grade (GPN) of 4.84 for 2024, said Sarawak Education director Omar Mahli.
This marks an improvement of 0.08 from the previous year's GPN of 4.92. Under the national grading system, a lower GPN indicates better overall academic performance.
'Sarawak has shown improvements both in quality and performance. Our State Average Grade improved to 4.84 from 4.92 in 2023, one of the best performances yet.
'The percentage of qualified candidates also increased, from 93.15 per cent in 2023 to 9.411 per cent in 2024.
'This shows more candidates are eligible to receive their certificates, having at least passed BM and Sejarah,' he told a press conference on the SPM 2024 results and performance for Sarawak here today.

Letters: Aces go places

I REFER to the letter 'Straight As but at what cost?' by Dr Pola Singh published in StarEdu on May 11 ( While I understand the writer's apprehension about the high number of 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) top scorers, I would like to congratulate each and every one of these aces. I assume you not only did well in the SPM, but were active in various school activities and showed consistency in your academic performance probably since your primary years. Your peers might have teased you for being a bookworm or an introvert, but deep down inside, the hurtful words probably came from a place of envy and admiration, wishing they could shine like you. Learn to accept the expectations that come with being a straight A student but be modest. Did you get a scholarship? Which college will you attend? What course will you take? Can you cope with a new environment? These and many more will be asked of you (and your parents) to the point where you may start to feel that your achievement is a double-edged sword. Don't allow others to make you nervous. Feel good about yourself and focus on the positives. Be confident and believe in yourself because the pressure will continue to mount. If you are sent abroad to pursue your tertiary education, you are likely to be homesick. There you are, alone in a foreign country, experiencing a different environment and culture for the first time in your life. Your heart will tell you to take the first flight home but you know you must persevere to discover a new world filled with unique opportunities and life-changing moments. With your excellent academic results, you are likely to be accepted by prestigious institutions that demand only the best of you. You and your parents will constantly be asked about your progress. Some who ask are genuine in wanting you to succeed. Others are just waiting for signs that you are faltering so that they can begin raining negative comments on you. Don't ever doubt yourself because you have made it this far. Set a high standard for yourself and stay focused on the future. Never get complacent. When you are intent on achieving your dreams, do not be afraid to strive for it. Skills can be acquired and honed, knowledge can be collected and wisdom comes with time. But it is only by having a passion for your studies that you will succeed and be better than the competition. And again, you will find yourself the envy of others. DR ARZMI YAACOB Ex-academic

300 Tanah Merah Students To Benefit From MRC's 'Tuisyen Pintar Santuni MADANI' Programme

TANAH MERAH, May 30 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC) has launched the 'Tuisyen Pintar Santuni MADANI' programme aimed at benefiting 300 students, particularly from Kampung Padang Siam and Kampung Sat here. MRC chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Suparadi Md Noor said the programme is implemented under the 'Satu Pemimpin Satu Kampung' initiative, also known as Santuni MADANI. Its goal is to enhance the potential of villages and the capabilities of communities through direct monitoring and engagement, aiming to identify socioeconomic issues and local needs. "This tuition programme is a community education initiative designed to enhance academic performance among students preparing for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, particularly those in this district. "It will run from June to November this year concurrently at Masjid Mukim Padang Siam and Sekolah Menengah Ugama (Arab) Al-Fitrah, Kampung Sat, as an intensive preparation for SPM candidates," he told Bernama after launching the programme at Masjid Mukim Padang Siam here today. Mohamad Suparadi added that the programme is structured around four core objectives that complement each other in strengthening the community education ecosystem. "First, it aims to increase access to quality education for students in need, especially those from low-income families, through the provision of intensive and structured tuition classes. "Second, the programme focuses on improving academic performance in core subjects, namely Bahasa Melayu, English, History, Mathematics, and Science. This focus was chosen due to the importance of these subjects in public exams and their relevance to students' academic future and careers," he said. He added that the initiative also aims to create synergy among parents, teachers, and students by encouraging comprehensive and collaborative support for the learning process, thereby fostering a competitive educational environment. "The final objective is to instil awareness among the community about the importance of education as a foundation for sustainable and inclusive national progress.
