Cardinals thank Cardinal Becciu for stepping back from conclave

Independent30-04-2025

Catholic cardinals acknowledged Wednesday the definitive word is still out about the Vatican trial that convicted Cardinal Angelo Becciu of financial crimes, in the latest twist to a drama that has dominated conversations leading up to the May 7 conclave to elect Pope Francis' successor.
Becciu, 76, is the once-powerful Italian cardinal who formally withdrew his participation in the conclave on Tuesday, after days of uncertainty about his status.
The Vatican's criminal court convicted Becciu in 2023 of embezzlement and other finance-related charges at the end of the so-called 'trial of the century.'
But the convictions are being appealed and there are lingering questions about the integrity of the trial, which the College of Cardinals appeared to refer to in a statement Wednesday. As in Italy, convictions in the Vatican criminal court are not considered definitive until all appeals are exhausted.
In their statement Wednesday, the college thanked Becciu for withdrawing and for 'contributing to the communion and serenity of the conclave.'
'The Congregation of Cardinals expresses its appreciation for the gesture he has made and hopes that the competent organs of justice will be able to definitively ascertain the facts,' said a statement from the cardinals who are meeting in pre-conclave discussions.
Francis in 2020 forced Becciu's resignation as head of the Vatican's saint-making office and forced him to renounce the rights of the cardinalate after receiving allegations of financial misconduct against him.
Becciu denied wrongdoing but said at the time that he wouldn't be able to vote in a future conclave. After Francis died April 21, Becciu had asserted his right to participate. But he backed down Tuesday after being presented with letters from Francis, penned before his death, saying he couldn't take part.
Questions around the trial
During the trial, defense lawyers discovered that Francis had secretly issued four decrees during the investigation to benefit prosecutors, allowing them to conduct intercepts and detain suspects without a judge's warrant. Defense lawyers argued such interference by an absolute monarch in a legal system where the pope exercises supreme legislative, executive and judicial power violated their clients' fundamental rights and robbed them of a fair trial.
Also during the trial, it emerged that the prosecution's prime witness against Becciu was coached, threatened and manipulated by outsiders to persuade him to turn on the cardinal.
The tribunal rejected the defense objections at the time and the trial went ahead. But in recent weeks even more evidence has emerged about the outside manipulation of the witness and apparent collusion with Vatican prosecutors and gendarmes to target Becciu. The Domani newspaper has published previously redacted WhatsApp chats and an audio suggesting that Vatican gendarmes and prosecutors were involved indirectly in coaching the witness, Monsignor Alberto Perlasca, to turn on Becciu.
Becciu has responded to the reports with outrage, saying they prove that his prosecution was manipulated from the start.
'From the very first moment I spoke of a machination against me: an investigation built on falsehoods, which five years ago unjustly devastated my life and exposed me to a pillory of worldwide proportions,' he said in a statement April 14, when the first chats were published.
The appeal is scheduled to begin in September.

The scandal-hit TV chef's chain of eateries was saved from the brink of closure last month in a £5million buyout. Controlling company Upmarket Leisure owed £5.3million to HMRC and almost £2million to creditors. Among them were food suppliers owed almost £500,000, a wine dealer due £302,000 and a pasta company expecting £4,809. A statement of affairs shows Upmarket only has £117,000 in cash at the bank and £320,000 in other assets to try to cover its debts. It lists D'Acampo, 48, as a ten per cent shareholder of the business, which ran five venues across London, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester. HMRC had issued a petition to wind up Upmarket at the High Court and administrators were appointed after a previous sale fell through. Staff were warned about a delay in wages being paid. But the jobs of all 400 employees were saved when the company was bought out in May. Last year, the Italian was unable to pay staff and the taxman after his My Pasta Bar chain wound up with around £5million losses. It comes after D'Acampo was accused of years of sexually inappropriate behaviour, which he denies. ITV has vowed to stop using him. Piccadilly restaurant that kicked out Tommy Robinson 'in the right' not to serve him

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Staff at West End restaurants have backed the Hawksmoor steakhouse for refusing to serve far right activist Tommy Robinson. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was asked to leave the venue after managers said staff and other diners were uncomfortable with his presence. Yaxley-Lennon, 42, said he and four others were told to leave the Hawksmoor near Piccadilly Circus, on Thursday. He has accused the restaurant of 'discriminatory behaviour' due to his political beliefs. The campaigner protests against what he brands 'radical Islam'. Hawksmoor said the group left the restaurant 'politely' adding that its decision was 'not about politics or belief' and it was 'not trying to engage in a public debate'. Video footage posted on X by a member of Yaxley-Lennon's group shows a member of staff telling them that his colleagues felt 'uncomfortable serving' them. The staff member is then heard saying that he had a 'duty of care'. They apologise any inconvenience and tell the group they do not have to pay for the drinks they have already consumed. Posting on X, Yaxley-Lennon said: 'Restaurants and businesses should not be political. We weren't loud, aggressive or inappropriate, so this can only be my politics.' He called for a boycott of the restaurant and for his followers on X to leave reviews. But restaurant and hotel staff at venues near the Hawksmoor backed the venue in its decision to exclude the activist. A worker at the Cafe Royal on Piccadilly told Metro: 'It's a difficult one as we have a duty to serve. But I think the waiter is within their rights to say they are uncomfortable and report it to management. 'Then the manager can make a decision. I've never had these problems before where I work. 'But personally I do not like what Tommy Robinson has to say and would say because of his controversial views some would not be happy to service his meal or sit near him.' A waiter at a restaurant close to the Hawksmoor told Metro: 'We are all talking about it around here. We in hospitality are from all over the world. The opinions of this man (Yaxley-Lennon) are uncomfortable for us. I am Muslim and his views offend me and I wouldn't want to serve him. I think that is my right.' Most staff Metro spoke to said they felt obliged to serve members of the public unless they 'crossed a line'. A chef at a hotel where A-listers and celebrities are frequent visitors said: 'Mainly we just get on with it because they are the paying customer. But sometimes you have to draw a line. I think the Hawksmoor was within its rights to do that.' Another chef at a high end Italian restaurant close to Hawksmoor said that everyone had the right to be served but that in some top restaurants anyone filming, as the group had done and posted on X, could be seen as breaking rules. He told Metro: 'I have worked in some very expensive restaurants with lords, ladies and celebrities eating. They had policies of no pictures or filming. I don't know what the Hawksmoor policy is but the group filming the staff could have made the situation worse.' More Trending The Hawksmoor steakhouse chain has seven restaurants in London, with branches in Liverpool, Edinburgh, Manchester and abroad. In a statement Hawksmoor said: 'On Thursday, a public figure was asked to leave one of our restaurants because guests and staff felt uncomfortable and had complained. 'The party left peacefully and politely on request.' It added it wanted to welcome guests 'regardless of background or views' and its team had to deal with a 'huge amount of fallout… some of which is quite concerning'. Although she fought fiercely to stay, church leaders said her adult content had exposed the school to "reputational risks". Now Elena is suing the dad she says found her OnlyFans profile and leaked the subscriber-only pictures to a football fans' group chat. The racey snaps spread like wildfire before the dad's wife reported the miss to the school authorities. Elena said: 'There are parents who accused me, but they are the same ones who paid to see me. It's embarrassing. "They made me look like a harlot, but who is the immoral one? "I want to give voice to all those women who, like me, have felt condemned or punished for doing things that men also do without facing any consequences. "Me, who can do what I want with my body in my spare time, or them, who pay to watch and then condemn? "I'm tired of the injustices I've suffered." Elena also filed complaints against three social media users for allegedly defamatory comments posted after the revelation broke. She said: "Despite everything, I miss the children - but not the problems related to that job that I loved. "But today I would not go back." School authorities said her contract would be terminated "for just cause with immediate effect. It claimed that her OnlyFans account "contrasts with the Catholic inspiration that guides the educational direction of the school". The controversy was unearthed after the father of one of her pupils allegedly bought photos from her OnlyFans. Maraga claims that the man's wife found out after he distributed the pictures to a football group. But the 29-year-old has blasted the way her former employer handled the matter. She said: "They attacked me, saying I was seeking media attention. "Taking compromising photos has never compromised my professionalism at work. "The school has never wanted to talk to me, they have always acted with letters and have never wanted dialogue. 6 The 29-year-old was suspended without pay last month after refusing to delete the account Credit: Instagram 6 She had been working in a Catholic nursery for five years Credit: Instagram "I am surprised that a Catholic school that preaches morality treats an employee in this way." The Italian education ministry has signalled its intent to draw up a new code of ethics to prevent teachers appearing on adult sites, The Telegraph has reported. Maraga told Italian media she has a degree in Educational Sciences and that she had been working in a Catholic nursery for five years. She told Il Messaggero: "I love being a nursery school teacher, it was my vocation since I was a child." She added that she opened the account one month ago "partly for fun, partly out of curiosity, partly to see if you could really earn money". She said: "In one day I get a month's salary."
