Chilling similarities in bloody deaths of Aussie and Swedish tourists in the same Thai 'Sin City' apartment building just hours apart
Perth roof painter Michael Shane Caola, 54, was found dead on July 17 on the seventh floor of the Grand Shivalay apartment in Pattaya, a beachside city famous for its sex-for-sale wild nightlife.
Pattaya City Police investigator Saijai Khamjulla said he received reports of the dead Australian about 4pm local time on Thursday.
Upon entering the room, officers found a broken glass and scattered pill bottles, but there were no signs of struggle.
Two hours earlier, Swedish national Mika Huotari, 38, was found dead in eerily similar circumstances after he was discovered naked near an overflowing bathtub with severe head wounds in his fifth-floor unit.
Police are probing CCTV footage which depicted a short-haired woman dressed in black entering the unit the night before his body was discovered.
Authorities currently do not believe the deaths are linked to each other.
Daily Mail Australia can reveal Mr Caola had been alone while his Thai-born wife of almost 10 years Phatsaya Caola celebrated her birthday without him two days earlier.
Phatsaya celebrated with a Facebook birthday post, but just days later paid tribute to Mr Caola by posting 'R.I.P Michael Shane' with sad face emojis.
The pair had regularly posted images of themselves at various resorts and exotic locations around Thailand, but their last social media post together was in January.
Apartment manager Thanchanok Prajit said she discovered Mr Caola after receiving a call from his relatives claiming they had been unable to contact him for two days.
Ms Prajit said the door had been locked from the inside and a foul odour was emanating from within, and she unlocked the door and contacting police.
'He was a regular customer, often seen exercising, probably to take care of his health,' she said.
Mr Caola, who also earned money buying and selling used utes, married Phatsaya in December 2015, but it's understood the couple broke up after sometime after January.
The couple had been frequent travellers between Perth and Thailand.
Mr Huotari was found dead just two hours before Mr Caola's body was located.
Ms Thanchanok told local investigators Mr Huotari had lived alone since May and was due to move out the day after he was found dead.
Investigators are yet to identify the woman they allege remained inside Mr Huotari's apartment for about 20 minutes.
It's alleged the woman was seen leaving the apartment carrying a bag and police consider her a person of interest.
It's been reported Ms Thanchanok claimed Mr Huotari frequently brought different women to his apartment during his stay.
Police have not confirmed whether Mr Huotari's death is being treated as a murder, but investigators have yet to rule out 'foul play'.
Investigators probing Mr Caola's death identified no signs of struggle.
Pattaya City Police Station Lieutenant Colonel Saijai Khamjulla said the cause of Mr Caola's death was still unknown and they were waiting for results of an autopsy.
'The case is currently under investigation and further details cannot be disclosed at this time,' he said.
He acknowledged the coincidence of the two deaths, but said there was 'no established link' between them.
'Since they occurred in the same building within a short timeframe, we're not ruling out any possibilities and will continue to investigate,' he said.
Mr Caola's social media is littered with photos taken across Thailand, stretching back a decade, including at markets and eateries in Pattaya.
The mysterious deaths are the latest to blight the city on Thailand's eastern Gulf coast notoriously known as 'Sin City'.
Despite recent efforts to remediate the city's image, local crime continues to make international headlines.
Earlier this week, wheelchair-bound British tourist Chris John Glennon, 60, was robbed by a trio of sex workers at a local resort.
Mr Glennon, from Northampton in England's East Midlands region, reportedly engaged the sex workers before bringing them back to his hotel room.
There, he claimed, they stole his money and took off while he was showering. Investigations into the alleged robbery are ongoing.

Murder victim named as Ayowale Aledejana
A man stabbed to death in south-east London has been named as 26-year-old Ayowale Aledejana. Police were called to Monson Road, New Cross, at around 7.26pm on Saturday after a man was found with stab wounds. Officers attended alongside paramedics and London Air Ambulance medics but Mr Aledjana, from South Norwood, Croydon, died at the scene. His family are being supported by specially trained officers. A 23-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody. Brave 6'4 cyclist who stepped in to stop crazed man harassing kids at train stop is butchered to death
A courageous cyclist was stabbed to death by a crazed man at a San Francisco train stop after he stepped in to protect a mother and her kids who were being harassed. Colden Kimber, 28, was fatally jabbed in the neck with a six-inch blade on July 26 while waiting at a Muni stop in the Ingleside neighborhood with his girlfriend. The couple had just gone on a date before making their way to the stop that was surrounded by children and families when Sean Collins, 29, walked up. As they waited, Kimber decided to bravely get in between Collins and a woman with her children as he shouted: 'Oh you think you are better than me' and 'You are scared of me,' court documents obtained by KGO said. While 6'4in Kimber stood directly in front of Collins as the train approached, the knifeman 'stabbed the unsuspecting victim on the right side of his neck,' records showed. Following the 'completely and utterly unprovoked' attack, Kimber stopped moving as blood gushed out of his neck, the court filing read. He was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital where he died after undergoing surgery. Shortly after the deadly incident, Collins was found covered in blood by police blocks away from the scene and taken into custody. Surveillance footage from a nearby restaurant also captured Collins walking in the area dressed in an all black outfit. Collins has been charged with murder and is due in court for his arraignment on August 14. It is unclear what drove him to stab Kimber, but according to court documents, the Superior Court of California received a report regarding his mental health. The results of the report remain unclear at this time. Cameras at the Muni station captured the attack and two child witnesses, aged eight and 14, saw the horror stabbing occur, according to prosecutors. Now, Kimber's loved ones are trying to make sense of the crime that took the life of someone who was trying to save others. Bradley Woehl, the owner of American Cyclery, where Kimber worked, said he is a 'totally irreplaceable' employee who he will miss dearly. 'I'm going to miss him for his good nature and his kind spirit, and he really lived such an exemplary life. He was a very positive influence on myself and my staff,' Woehl told KGO. He added that Kimber worked at the shop for years, where he would repair and even build new bikes for customers. 'He is totally irreplaceable as a worker, and totally irreplaceable as a friend and person and someone who had a good influence in my life,' his boss added. Kimber discovered his passion for cycling when he took his mother's place in the New York triathlon after she had to drop out while fighting breast cancer, she told the San Francisco Chronicle. 'He had never ridden a bike on a road,' Lara Litchfield-Kimber said. 'The bikes were the things that stuck.' After relocating from New York to California in 2020 with his long-time girlfriend, Kimber joined the Dolce Vita Cycling team as well as a semiprofessional ice hockey team in Vacaville. He previously played hockey growing up, his mother explained. Kimber loved biking so much he would be on his bike for 12,000-13,000 miles some years, per the Chronicle. When he wasn't dabbling in sports, Kimber was studying kinesiology at San Francisco State University. He dreamed of working in sports medicine. In addition to trying to plan services and memorials for her late son, his grieving mother said his family plans to 'simultaneously navigate a criminal homicide trial from across the country and all the unknowns of this unfamiliar process.' As of Sunday afternoon more than $81,500 was raised to help them out.

Hunt for Britain's most-wanted fugitive after 2005 murder of mother
Detectives are hunting Britain's most-wanted fugitive 20 years on from the murder of a mother at her home. Kevin Parle is wanted after Lucy Hargreaves, 22, was shot dead at her home in Walton, Liverpool on Aug 3 2005. Ms Hargreaves was killed while she was asleep on the sofa after three men burst into her home, which they then set on fire. Her partner and two-year-old daughter were upstairs and had to escape through a window. Police arrested 21 people as part of their investigations, but no one has been convicted. Parle, who was believed to be living abroad, was also wanted in connection with the murder of Liam Kelly, 16, who was shot in the early hours of June 19 2004 in Dingle, Liverpool. A comprehensive review into Ms Hargreaves' murder was started by Merseyside Police two years ago and remains active. Detectives are also continuing to appeal for anyone with information about a gold Lexus car, believed to have been dumped shortly after the shooting on Richard Kelly Drive, Clubmoor, by a number of men who then ran in the direction of Normandale Road. 'She wasn't involved in criminality' Howard Rubbery, head of the serious case review unit, said: 'The family remain absolutely devastated by Lucy's death. 'It's important to note Lucy is an absolutely innocent victim. She's not from a family of criminality. She wasn't involved in criminality. 'The hunt for Kevin Parle is very much on, and we ask anybody with information, anybody who is close to Parle and knows where he is, to please come forward. 'There were three males responsible for this offence and we are looking for justice for Lucy's family in relation to all three. 'I do believe that there are people out there who have yet to speak to the police, even though it's 20 years on, who hold information that's absolutely vital to our investigation.' Two decades on, Ms Hargreaves' family released a previously unshared photograph of the mother-of-three, taken at college. They said: 'Over the past 20 years, people will have talked with family and friends. A number of people were contacted by males using a phone that was stolen, along with a vehicle used in Lucy's murder. 'The people who received those calls, along with others, could have information which could be crucial in achieving justice for Lucy, her parents, sister, children and all her extended family and friends. 'We appeal directly to them to please come forward. Now is the time.' Her family, who said they 'miss her every single day', welcomed a focus on tackling violence against women and girls in recent years. They praised the families of other victims of gun crime, including Cheryl Korbel and Julie Dale, the mothers of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel and Ashley Dale, 28, who were shot in their homes in separate incidents in Liverpool in August 2022. The family said: 'We greatly admire the determination and guts of the families of those who have more recently been killed as a result of gun crime here in Merseyside. 'The mums of both Ashley Dale and Olivia Pratt-Korbel have led a real and powerful community challenge to men of violence.' The family added: 'We consider ourselves to be an ordinary local family with strong roots in the Walton, Norris Green, Croxteth and Dovecot areas of Liverpool. 'Lucy's nanny Joyce was a strong mother of eight who had to cope with the loss of three granddaughters in her lifetime - including Lucy. 'Her nanny Betty, left a widow aged 35 with six children to bring up, was awarded the British Empire Medal for her services to nursing as an auxiliary nurse in the Royal Liverpool Hospital. 'They were two strong local women typical of their generation, and Lucy too was a strong woman who could have achieved so much had she only been given the opportunity.'
