VIENNA - A man chased after a high-speed train and wedged himself between two carriages after it departed while he was on a cigarette break, according to a report from Austrian media on Sunday cited by the German news agency dpa on Sunday.
According to the Austrian tabloid Heute, the 24-year-old man had boarded the Railjet in Innsbruck and was travelling to Vienna. The Algerian national stepped off at St Pölten, about 60 kilometres west of the Austrian capital, to smoke a cigarette, leaving his luggage on board.
When the train set off without him at 10.03pm (2003 GMT) on Saturday as scheduled, the 24-year-old ran alongside it and climbed between two carriages, holding on as the train picked up speed.
According to Heute, the train reached speeds of 100 kilometres per hour, when the man knocked on the windows from the outside and prompted the conductor to make an emergency stop a few kilometres from where he got on. The man was then brought safely inside the carriage.
The tabloid cited authorities as saying the man's actions were reckless and dangerous.
Police intercepted the man in Vienna-Meidling. According to Heute, he did not have valid residency documents and was taken into custody.
Despite the incident, the train arrived in Vienna just seven minutes late. The railway operator is investigating the case, and the man faces possible legal action. - BERNAMA

Israel strikes Huthi energy site in Yemen amid ongoing conflict

JERUSALEM: Israel confirmed it struck an energy infrastructure site in Yemen's capital Sanaa on Sunday, targeting facilities linked to the Iran-backed Huthi rebels. A military statement said the operation hit 'an energy infrastructure site that served the Huthi terrorist regime' near the rebel-held capital without specifying the exact location. Huthi-run Al-Masirah TV reported the attack targeted the Haziz power station south of Sanaa, citing a civil defence source. No casualties were immediately reported, though an AFP photographer observed significant damage at the site. A power station employee told AFP that 'two aggressive strikes by the Israeli enemy' occurred in the early morning but caused no injuries. The Huthis have launched repeated missile and drone attacks against Israel since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, claiming solidarity with Palestinians. Most Huthi projectiles have been intercepted, prompting Israeli retaliatory strikes on rebel positions in Yemen. Israel's military stated the latest strike responded to 'repeated attacks' by the group. Later on Sunday, the Israeli military intercepted another missile fired from Yemen after sirens sounded in multiple regions. Huthi spokesman Yahya Saree claimed responsibility, stating the group targeted Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport with a ballistic missile. Defence Minister Israel Katz warned on social media that the Huthis would 'pay with compound interest for every attempt to fire at Israel' and announced an air and sea blockade on the group. Katz had previously threatened a blockade in June without significant enforcement. Beyond targeting Israel, the Huthis have attacked ships they allege are linked to Israel in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The group expanded its campaign to include US and British vessels after both nations launched strikes to secure the waterways in January 2024. A May ceasefire with the US ended weeks of intense strikes, though the Huthis vowed to continue targeting Israeli-affiliated ships. – AFP

Seven killed in Ecuador pool hall shooting as gang violence surges

BOGOTÁ: Gunmen killed seven people at a pool hall in Ecuador's Santo Domingo city, police confirmed on Sunday, marking the latest deadly attack in the nation's escalating gang violence crisis. National police reported the victims died from gunshot wounds in the nightlife district of Santo Domingo, located 150 kilometres west of Quito. Authorities are investigating the massacre and pursuing the perpetrators, according to official statements shared via WhatsApp with reporters. Online footage, purportedly from security cameras, showed masked attackers firing at two men outside the pool hall before entering to continue shooting. The assailants fled before police arrived at the scene, though AFP could not independently verify the circulating video. Local media suggested the killings may be linked to organised crime, echoing a similar pool hall attack last month that left nine dead in General Villamil Playas. Ecuador's homicide rate has surged from six per 100,000 residents in 2018 to 38 per 100,000 in 2024, with 4,051 killings recorded between January and May this year. President Daniel Noboa's government continues emergency measures in four provinces, including Guayas where 14 died in recent massacres, but violence persists. Gangs exploit Ecuador's strategic ports, dollarised economy, and corruption to control drug routes, with 73% of global cocaine shipments passing through the country. Ecuador seized 294 tons of drugs in 2024, surpassing the previous year's 221-ton record, as cartels expand operations from the nation once considered Latin America's peace haven. – AFP

Militia attack kills nine in eastern DR Congo town of Oicha

OICHA: At least nine people died when a militia linked to Islamic State launched an overnight attack in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Allied Democratic Forces targeted civilians in Oicha town, looting shops and burning homes between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Local civil group leader Isaac Kavalami confirmed eight civilians and one police officer died in the assault. An AFP reporter observed nine bodies at Oicha General Hospital's morgue, some bearing stab wounds from the violence. Congolese army spokesman Lieutenant Marc Elongo attributed the attack to 'ADF terrorists' seeking revenge against civilians for military operations in the region. Kavalami revealed civil society representatives had warned security forces about potential attacks beforehand without receiving protection measures. The ADF, originally Ugandan Muslim fighters based near the Ugandan border since the 1990s, has killed thousands despite joint Ugandan-Congolese military efforts. The group formally aligned with Islamic State in 2019 but continues targeting civilians in the conflict-ridden region. – AFP
