Mets Expected To Pursue Red Sox's $120M Superstar In Free Agency
The Boston Red Sox won the Alex Bregman sweepstakes last offseason after battling with a handful of clubs for his services, and it's paid off in a huge way. Bregman is the best player on the club as they look to make a deep push for the World Series this season.
But Bregman has an opt-out in his contract, and he seems likely to use it and land back in free agency while chasing a longer contract.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic revealed that the New York Mets are seemingly expected to pursue Bregman if he opts out of his contract at the end of the year.

HOUSTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 11: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox runs the bases after hitting a two run home run during the first inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on August 11, 2025 in Houston, Texas. More"Bregman, who is making $40 million this year and signed for two more years at that rate, will likely opt out of his contract and seek a longer-term deal," Bowden wrote. "He missed time this season with a quad injury but has hit .299/.379/.542 in 327 plate appearances. It appears Boston would be his first choice in free agency, but he is an obvious fit with several other contending teams, including the Phillies, Yankees, Tigers, Dodgers, Mariners, and even the Mets."
The Mets are a perfect fit for Bregman, and they have the money to sign him. Although they didn't win the sweepstakes last year, they could look to do so this year with owner Steve Cohen's seemingly infinitely deep pockets.
Pete Alonso is likely to opt out himself, just like Bregman, and Mark Vientos has struggled. Neither corner infield spot has looked good in Queens, making Bregman an obvious target if he opts out of his Red Sox deal in a few months.
