Pixel 10 Pro phones can now take 50MP portrait mode shots, with a catch

TL;DR Google has revealed that the Pixel 10 Pro phones can shoot high-resolution, 50MP portrait mode images. This is a welcome addition if you'd like to crop after the fact or print an image. Unfortunately, this feature only applies to the main camera. Google's Pixel 10 phones have a few notable camera improvements and additions, making them stand out from other flagship Android phones. However, the Pro phones also have a new option in portrait mode. Google says the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL both offer a 50MP portrait mode option via the main camera. The company claims these are the highest-resolution portraits of any smartphone, but they're actually catching up to a rival brand in this regard rather than beating them. Don't want to miss the best from Android Authority? Set us as a preferred source in Google Search to support us and make sure you never miss our latest exclusive reports, expert analysis, and much more. The admittedly China-only vivo X200 Ultra already offers 50MP portrait modes via both the main and tele cameras. By contrast, Google only offers high-resolution portraits via the main camera. That's not the best decision on Google's part, as the main camera isn't typically the preferred sensor for portrait shots. These cameras give you a wider shot than you might like, while often featuring a deep depth-of-field (i.e., more of the scene in focus). The latter characteristic means smartphone makers have to lean on software processing to blur the background, potentially leading to depth estimation issues. Meanwhile, many flagship phones today have telephoto cameras with large sensors and relatively wide apertures, enabling a shallow depth-of-field for more natural bokeh effects. However, Google says the Pixel 10 Pro phones offer an 'updated algorithm' for both 50MP and 12MP portrait modes. The algorithm apparently offers improved detail, depth estimation, and segmentation, 'especially around hair.' Google also told us during a Tensor G5 briefing that the chip indeed offers 'advanced' segmentation. This allows it to identify individual elements in portrait images, such as skin, lips, and eyes. So it seems like the company is addressing some of our concerns. Nevertheless, the Pixel 10 Pro line's 50MP portrait mode option could be useful if you'd like to print some snaps. This high resolution could also be handy if you want to crop the image after the fact. But we hope Google brings 48MP portraits to the tele camera for maximum flexibility. Trump calls on Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook to resign over alleged mortgage fraud

President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook to resign after a member of his administration accused Cook of committing mortgage fraud, the latest example of the Trump administration's efforts to gain control over the central bank. Bill Pulte, director of the agency that oversees mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, urged the Justice Department to investigate Cook, who was appointed to the Fed's governing board by former president Joe Biden in 2022. She was reappointed the following year to a term that lasts until 2038. Pulte, in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, alleged that Cook has claimed two homes as her principal residences — one in Michigan, the other in Georgia — to fraudulently obtain better mortgage lending terms. Pulte also charged in his letter that Cook has listed her condo in Atlanta, Georgia, for rent. Mortgages for homes used as principal residences typically carry lower interest rates than properties that are purchased to rent, Pulte's letter said. The allegation represents another front in the Trump administration's attack on the Fed, which has yet to cut its key interest rate as Trump has demanded. If Cook were to step down, then the White House could nominate a replacement. And Trump has said he would only appoint people who would support lower rates. The more members of the Fed's governing board that Trump can appoint, the more control he will be able to assert over the Fed, which has long been considered independent from day-to-day politics. Trump will be able to replace Chair Jerome Powell in May 2026, when Powell's term expires. Yet 12 members of the Fed's interest-rate setting committee have a vote on whether to raise or lower interest rates, so even replacing the Chair doesn't guarantee that Fed policy will shift the way Trump wants. All seven members of the Fed's governing board, however, are able to vote on rate decisions. The other five voters include the president of the Fed's New York branch and a rotating group of four of the presidents of the Fed's other 11 regional branches. Trump appointed two members of the Fed's board in his first term, Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman. Both dissented July 30 from the central bank's decision to keep its rate unchanged in favor of a rate cut. Another Fed governor, Adriana Kugler, stepped down unexpectedly Aug. 1, and Trump has appointed one of his economic advisers, Stephen Miran, to fill out the remainder of her term until January. If Trump is able to replace Cook, the first Black woman to serve on the Fed's board, as well as Kugler and Powell, that would give him a clear majority on the board of governors. Powell, however, could stay on the board after finishing his term as chair next May. The Federal Reserve declined to comment on the accusation. Trump has for months demanded that the Federal Reserve reduce the short-term interest rate it controls, which currently stands at about 4.3%. He has also repeatedly insulted Powell, who has said that the Fed would like to see more evidence of how the economy evolves in response to Trump's sweeping tariffs before making any moves. Powell has also said the duties threaten to raise inflation and slow growth. Trump says that a lower rate would reduce the government's borrowing costs on $37 trillion in debt and boost the housing market by reducing mortgage rates. Yet mortgage borrowing costs do not always follow the Fed's rate decisions. The Trump administration has made similar claims of mortgage fraud against Democrats that Trump has attacked, including California Sen. Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Did Google just give us our first glimpse of a new Nest speaker?

Google TL;DR Google is currently in the middle of launching the Pixel 10 series at its Made by Google event. During one video spot, the company quietly featured an unfamiliar-looking smart speaker. It's possible this could represent an upcoming new Nest model. Google's big Pixel 10 launch event is finally underway, and it is… something! The star-studded showcase is feeling more like a talk show than the sort of announcements we normally expect from Google, and the surprises are continuing with some unexpected hardware. Don't want to miss the best from Android Authority? Set us as a preferred source in Google Search to support us and make sure you never miss our latest exclusive reports, expert analysis, and much more. In one video spot put together for the event, racer Lando Norris and basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo try walking a mile in each other's shoes, and the athletes prepare for this role-swap by asking Gemini for a little advice. Google That includes using Gemini on Pixel 10 phones, of course, but Lando also taps into Google's AI assistant with a device that we're not yet familiar with. Presumably this could be some sort of new Nest speaker — its certainly been long enough since we had a fresh addition to the lineup, and with plans to bring Gemini for Home to smart speakers this fall, maybe some new hardware also makes perfect sense.
