The exercise is being conducted simultaneously in Delhi as well Uttar Pradesh and Haryana districts in the National Capital Region, the officials said.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in collaboration with the Indian Army and the governments of Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, is organizing 'Exercise Suraksha Chakra' that culminated with a field-level mock drill.
The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is the lead agency for coordinating the mock drill to test the preparedness of Delhi-NCR in case of earthquake and industrial chemical hazards scenarios, said a statement from the Authority.

New Delhi: A field-level, multi-agency disaster management mock drill was carried out at 55 locations across the national capital on Friday morning, according to officials. The exercise began with the triggering of a simulated earthquake scenario followed by chemical leaks in industrial and transport zones in all the 11 districts of the city. The exercise was conducted simultaneously in Delhi, UP, Haryana and the National Capital Region, the officials said. A large number of personnel from different agencies including fire services, police and revenue department, took part in the exercise conducting rescue and relief rehearsals at places like Ramesh Nagar Metro station, Mother International School and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Preparations for emergency response situation in case of earthquake and industrial accident was recreated at the RML hospital. At the Mother International School, disconnection of gas and electricity connections after signal of simulated earthquake and rescue was practised. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in collaboration with the Indian Army and the governments of Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, is organising 'Exercise Suraksha Chakra' that culminated with a field-level mock drill.

Lt Gen V Sreehari Assumes Command of Dakshin Bharat Area
Secunderabad: The Indian Army is reaffirming its commitment to strong leadership in protecting national integrity and maintaining operational readiness in the southern region. In this context, Lieutenant General V. Sreehari, AVSM, SC, SM, has taken over as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Dakshin Bharat Area, which includes Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the Union Territories of Puducherry and Lakshadweep. A distinguished alumnus of Sainik School Amaravati Nagar, the National Defence Academy in Khadakvasla, and the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Lt Gen Sreehari was commissioned into the 16 Sikh Light Infantry on June 13, 1987. In August 1992, he joined the elite Parachute Regiment and subsequently commanded the Para Special Forces Battalion during Operation RAKSHAK. He has led various units in challenging environments, including the Siachen Glacier, a Strike Corps Infantry Brigade, and a Mountain Division in the Northeast. In addition to his operational roles, Lt Gen Sreehari served in a United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo and held important instructional positions at the Junior Leaders Wing in Belgaum and the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington. Throughout his career, Lt Gen Sreehari has occupied high-level staff positions, including Director General of Recruiting, Director General of Manpower Planning and Personnel Services at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army), Major General of General Staff at Eastern Command, and Deputy Inspector General of Personnel at the Directorate General of Assam Rifles. He earned a Master of Science in Defence Studies from Madras University, a Master's in Management Studies from Osmania University, and a Master of Philosophy from Madras University. Lt Gen Sreehari's exceptional service has been recognized with the Shaurya Chakra (1998), Sena Medal (2021), and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2023), as well as commendation cards from the Chiefs of Integrated Staff Committee and Army Staff. Hailing from Wandoor, Malappuram, Kerala, he is the son of the late Petty Officer M. Velayudhan Nair and Sulochana Nair. His wife, Uma Sreehari, is a homemaker from Muvattupuzha, and their daughter is professionally based in Puducherry.

From schools to factories: Mock disaster drill unfolds across Greater Noida
In an elaborate city-wide exercise to test disaster preparedness, Greater Noida witnessed a series of multi-agency mock drills on Friday under the National Disaster Management Authority's (NDMA's) 'Exercise Suraksha Chakra' initiative, officials informed. (Sunil Ghosh/HT Photo) The drills were aimed at assessing the district's coordinated response to natural and industrial disasters such as earthquakes and chemical fires, and were carried out simultaneously at five key locations, including factories, educational institutions, and a major hospital. Simulated earthquake and industrial mishap scenarios were enacted at LG India Pvt Ltd, the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Savitribai Phule Girls Inter College, AWHO Township in Gurjinder Vihar, and the Vikas Bhawan complex in Surajpur. Each site had a designated incident commander overseeing the execution of disaster protocols involving evacuation, fire control, first aid, triage, and rescue operations. District magistrate (DM) Medha Roopam visited the LG India Pvt Ltd site, where she reviewed the sequence of emergency responses, assessed safety protocols, and spoke with administrative officers and security personnel. 'Our primary objective with this mock drill was to ensure that all departments are equipped to act swiftly and in coordination during any real emergency. Preparedness is key, and exercises like this help us identify gaps and strengthen our disaster response mechanisms,' said DM Roopam. She also interacted with school students participating in the drill and reviewed basic school infrastructure including toilets, drinking water, sanitation, and furniture, all of which were found satisfactory. 'Public awareness is just as important as administrative readiness. Through these drills, we aim to train and sensitize people, especially schoolchildren, so they know how to protect themselves during disasters,' Roopam added. One of the most comprehensive simulations unfolded at GIMS where the drill began at 9am with an emergency siren mimicking a high-intensity earthquake. Within seconds, the hospital activated its internal disaster protocol — a live test of its capacity to manage rescue operations, clinical triage, fire response, and critical care coordination under simulated crisis conditions. The situation escalated with the simulation of a chemical fire, requiring full deployment of all emergency systems without disrupting essential patient services. 'Today's drill is not just an exercise, it is a declaration of our preparedness. In an actual disaster, time saves lives. I am proud of the quick, precise, and coordinated response by every member of our institution,' said director GIMS Dr (Brig.) Rakesh Gupta. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), led by inspector Rajendra Kumar with five junior commissioned officers and 32 trained personnel, carried out rescue operations drills in GIMS with military precision. The district administration, including additional district magistrate (ADM) Atul Kumar, sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Anuj Nehra, and chief fire officer Pradeep Kumar with a 16-member fire team, ensured smooth civic alignment. Emergency services across all five sites were tested on a range of response actions, from swift evacuations and crowd management to mock rescues, first aid delivery, fire containment, and referral logistics. Officials said each department executed its designated role effectively, demonstrating the importance of joint disaster preparedness in a rapidly growing urban area like Greater Noida. The drill brought together key agencies including the NDRF, SDRF, fire services, police, transport, health department, and the local administration. District officials said the drill has laid the foundation for stronger disaster resilience across the region, while also instilling a culture of preparedness among residents, students, and institutional stakeholders alike.
