How much pressure is Kalen DeBoer under in 2025? Joel Klatt weighs in on Alabama coach

How much pressure is Kalen DeBoer under in 2025? Joel Klatt weighs in on Alabama coach How much pressure is Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer facing in 2025? Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt has some thoughts on DeBoer entering Year 2 in Tuscaloosa, which he shared Monday on his popular video podcast, "The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast." Klatt discussed 10 head coaches under pressure entering the 2025 season. For DeBoer, who went 9-4 in his first season as Alabama's coach last year, Klatt said he thinks that fans are still trying to be patient with Nick Saban's successor. "At this point, the fan base right now, just trying to be patient with Kalen DeBoer," Klatt said. "Year 1 was, let's face it, a little underwhelming for DeBoer. They were 9-4. First time not winning 10 games since 2007. That was obviously Nick Saban's first year. They're not going to sit around and wait for these 8-win, 9-win seasons." Klatt acknowledged that DeBoer was at a place where he's expected to win. "And not just win, but win big and win at the highest level of college football," he added. "Can't miss the playoff, in particular as we have expansion to 12 and we're going to be moving in 2026 and beyond to 14 or most likely 16 (teams)." Alabama missed the playoff last season in large part because of a 24-3 blowout loss to an Oklahoma Sooners team that had won only one conference game all year before the Crimson Tide's Nov. 23 debacle in Norman. 'He's got to win that game': Joel Klatt on the biggest game Kalen DeBoer faces in 2025 Where things could get "a little uncomfortable" for DeBoer in Year 2, Klatt believes, isn't in the Crimson Tide's Sept. 27 game against Georgia in Athens. Instead, Klatt believes the biggest pressure on DeBoer will be in Alabama's 'Third Saturday in October' rivalry clash with Tennessee on Oct. 18 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. "That's the moment on the schedule," Klatt said. "Home losses, first of all, are not good, and then they would be starting really tough and in a schedule that's really more backloaded. Obviously you've got Georgia, so let's just say that if you're losing to Tennessee, you've probably lost to Georgia. So that would be your second loss in the SEC. Then you still have to go to South Carolina and host LSU. "If you were to lose to Tennessee, who doesn't have Nico Iamaleava, and now you're about to go play LaNorris Sellers and Garrett Nussmeier, I think South Carolina and LSU are both better teams than Tennessee. John Mateer is better than any option that Tennessee has at quarterback, so you still have to play Oklahoma. You still have the Iron Bowl." In that scenario, Klatt believes a loss to Tennessee -- something Alabama hasn't suffered to the Vols at Bryant-Denny Stadium since 2003 -- would put the Crimson Tide in a position to have to run the table to avoid another 9-3 season and reach the College Football Playoff. "We saw what 9-3 did last year, even in the SEC," Klatt said. "We thought for a lot of years that in a 12-team playoff, a 9-3 (SEC) team would go to the playoff, and guess what? That didn't happen. So the pressure would go through the roof for Kalen DeBoer." Klatt closed his segment on DeBoer up by saying: "That Tennessee game at home, he's got to win that game. So the pressure index for Kalen DeBoer (is) they're trying to be patient, but patience would wear out real fast if they were to lose that game at home to Tennessee." Alabama opens the 2025 season at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee against Florida State on Aug. 30. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ABC. Who was the best 5-star quarterback of the 21st century: Tim Tebow or Vince Young?

Who was the best 5-star quarterback of the 21st century: Tim Tebow or Vince Young? It is a well-known fact that the quarterback is the most important position in football, so it stands to reason that college football programs put a great deal of focus on the player they put under center. But there is only so much talent that can be distributed over the 100-plus schools in the Football Bowl Subdivision Last month, the Athletic's Antonio Morales undertook the task of ranking every 5-star quarterback recruit of the past 25 years — a list that includes 61 total passers who earned the top rating. Among those mentioned was the Florida Gators' legendary two-time national champion Tim Tebow, who edged out Texas Longhorns stud Vince Young for the top spot in the rankings. Two other players who passed through Gainesville were listed among the top 20 as well, while another pair landed in the middle of the pack. No. 1 Tim Tebow (2006) "Tebow was a key contributor during the Gators' national title run as a true freshman in 2006, won the Heisman in 2007, led Florida to a national championship in 2008 and finished in the top five of Heisman voting while leading the Gators to a 13-1 record and top-five finish in 2009. He accounted for 145 total touchdowns, passed for 9,285 yards and rushed for 2,947," Morales begins. "That's the sort of career any fan base dreams of for a five-star quarterback." No. 3 Cam Newton (2007) "The 2010s were defined by super teams with elite rosters that won national championships, such as Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State and LSU. Auburn was an exception thanks to Newton, who blended skill, size, power and athleticism to post an all-time season in which he accounted for 51 touchdowns, won the Heisman and led the Tigers to a national title," Morales notes. "One player can't carry a team to a national championship, but Newton came about as close as possible. He didn't have a single skill player drafted. Only tackles Brandon Mosley (fourth round) and Lee Ziemba (seventh round) were picked on the O-line. The entire starting defense had only two players drafted," he continues. "Newton's 2010 campaign is the most impressive individual season from any player on this list." No. 13 Chris Leak (2003) "While those two reside among the top three in Morales' rankings, there is still another member of the Orange and Blue who was mentioned: Chris Leak," Morales declares. "Leak was the No. 2 quarterback in his class and was a major recruiting win for Florida in 2003. Even though Tebow is remembered more, Leak was the primary quarterback on a team that won the national championship." The Athletic's 5-star QB recruiting rankings top 20 Tim Tebow, Florida (2006) Vince Young, Texas (2002) Cam Newton, Florida (2007) Jameis Winston, Florida State (2012) Trevor Lawrence, Clemson (2018) Kyler Murray, Texas A&M (2015) Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama (2017) Bryce Young, Alabama (2020) Justin Fields, Georgia (2018) Caleb Williams, Oklahoma (2021) Bo Nix, Auburn (2019) J.J. Warner Bros. Discovery split throws the future of TNT Sports into question

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery Chief Executive Officer David Zaslav ended his company's long relationship with the National Basketball Association. Now, he may be setting the stage to end his relationship with U.S. sports, altogether. WBD announced Monday it's splitting itself into two companies — a concept CNBC first reported had picked up steam in April. One company, temporarily called Streaming and Studios, will consist of Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO and HBO Max. The other, currently dubbed Global Networks, will be the rest of the company's assets: legacy cable networks, TNT Sports, digital products and free-to-air channels in Europe. Zaslav will be the CEO of Streaming and Studios. Gunnar Wiedenfels, the current Warner Bros. Discovery Chief Financial Officer, will become the CEO of Global Networks. The divorce raises the question of where live sports right held by TNT will land without Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming portfolio as part of the same company. During a conference call Monday, Zaslav said it will be up to Wiedenfels and his team to decide where they'd like to license TNT Sports programming to the Streaming and Studios business — or anyone else —in the future. Currently, all of TNT Sports appear on HBO Max, Warner Bros. Discovery's flagship streaming service. Zaslav said U.S. sports haven't been a major driver of HBO Max signups, suggesting that it may make sense for TNT Sports to consciously uncouple with the streaming service down the road. "Inside the U.S., sports have been less critical," Zaslav said on a call with investors Monday. "It's viewed, but it hasn't been a real driver for us. So it will continue to be on HBO Max, but the Global Networks business will evaluate over time where the best place for that is." HBO Max will continue to license sports for existing deals. Still, Wiedenfels will have options on how to monetize TNT's future streaming and digital sports rights. He could strike a licensing deal with a different media company for the live sports that appear on the Turner networks (TNT, TBS and TruTV), such as the NCAA's March Madness, the French Open, NASCAR, Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League. "The U.S. sports rights will reside at the Global Networks, and its management team will determine how best to monetize the streaming and digital rights over time," said Wiedenfels. "Internationally, sports will largely coexist, both on linear and streaming, as they do today." Or, he could decide to merge TNT Sports with another entity, such as the forthcoming Comcast spinout, Versant. Mark Lazarus, Versant's CEO, told CNBC Sport last month he was interested in bidding on sports rights to gain distribution heft with pay-TV operators. Acquiring TNT Sports could be a major step in that direction. If Wiedenfels opts for consolidation, he will have to weigh the tax effects of selling off assets after the separation takes place. While Warner Bros. Discovery noted the split is tax-free, Wiedenfels emphasized on Monday's call that transactions could begin as soon as the separation occurs, which is expected by mid-2026. "On the tax side, I said this earlier, I want to be absolutely clear: Once this deal closes, both companies are going to be free and clear," Wiedenfels said. "There is no minimum time." A spokesperson for Versant did not immediately return request for comment.
