New Orleans adds established veteran as Alvin Kamara backup
The post New Orleans adds established veteran as Alvin Kamara backup appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New Orleans Saints made headlines this offseason since they hired a new head coach in Kellen Moore after he won the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles. Then, they made headlines again after quarterback Derek Carr announced he was retiring from football due to a prolonged and nagging shoulder injury. It has been a rollercoaster offseason. But now, with mandatory minicamp underway, the headlines have shifted to more basic cuts or signings, including the recent signing of running back Cam Akers after a tryout. Advertisement Akers signed with the Saints after spending two practices during mandatory minicamp. He joins Alvin Kamara, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Kendre Miller, and rookie sixth-round pick Devin Neal in a crowded backfield. Kamara is easily the best running back on the roster, but the battle will be over who wins the job for the second string. The 2020 second-round pick turns 26 in June and still has plenty left in the tank as a running back in the NFL, but it might not be as a starter. The Los Angeles Rams drafted him, and after the 2023 season, traded him to the Minnesota Vikings. Then, Akers signed with the Houston Texans for the 2024-2025 season, but the Texans traded him to the Vikings in his second stint with the team halfway through the season. He finished the year with 104 carries and 444 rushing yards with two touchdowns. Then, he had 14 receptions for 68 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns. Discussing the addition of Akers during Tuesday's media session, Moore complemented what he's seen from the veteran back, as he brings plenty of experience to the table. Advertisement 'Cam is an experienced player,' Moore said via CBS Sports. 'He's done a lot throughout this league. You're always trying to evaluate as many players as possible as you go through this. So we felt like it was a great opportunity, and we are fired up that he wanted to come out here.' His NFL career has been more bumpy than expected, especially after being a five-star recruit out of Mississippi and a standout at Florida State. In five NFL seasons, Akers has totaled 502 rushing attempts for 2,025 yards and 13 touchdowns, and he has also caught 52 passes for 388 yards and four touchdowns. The new-look Saints are in line to utilize their ground game even more without Carr. Tyler Shough, their rookie quarterback, is most likely starting under center, and he will need help to get acclimated to the NFL. Akers brings some nice experience to a running back room with multiple weapons. Cardinals get 2 crucial injury updates
The post Cardinals get 2 crucial injury updates appeared first on ClutchPoints. The St. Louis Cardinals' form lately has been up and down as of late. They were just swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates on the road. Before those three straight losses, they swept the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field. Those two results came after splitting a series with the Chicago Cubs at home, and on Friday, the Cardinals and Cubs will resume their intense rivalry. Before the series opener, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak gave an update on a couple of injured contributors to the press, including the Athletic's Katie Woo on X, formerly Twitter. Advertisement 'John Mozeliak said today Iván Herrera (hamstring) is ramping up well and could begin a rehab assignment in roughly a week and a half & a post-ASB return is possible,' posted Woo on the social media platform. 'Also said Jordan Walker (appendicitis) will continue getting reps with Springfield but shouldn't be too long.' Getting both Herrera and Walker back would be very useful indeed. Herrera had taken over the starting catching job. Walker was starting to find his footing at the major league level. Both players will hopefully be long-term pieces for the franchise. Mozeliak hopes they will be a part of his legacy with St. Louis, as he's set to leave his current role after the season. Will Herrera and Walker be able to get back in time to help the Cardinals make a postseason push? Can Jordan Walker and Ivan Herrera help Cardinals after All-Star Break? Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Advertisement Herrera's Grade 2 left hamstring strain was a tough blow to the Cards when he went down a couple weeks ago. He'd really come into his own at the starting backstop and was building a good rapport with the pitching staff. Could St. Louis finally have Yadier Molina's heir apparent? Free agent Willson Contreras was supposed to fill that role, but now he's at first base. For now however, the Cardinals will have to do without him. As for Walker, his appendicitis was certainly an unexpected blow. Yet he's already rehabbing with Springfield in the minors, so don't be surprised if he does make his return before the All-Star Break. It is also possible that St. Louis decides to take a little more cautious route and bring their budding slugger back after the break. If Walker and Herrera can impact their postseason hopes, then the sooner the Cards get them back, the better. Why a real Saints QB competition is brewing
The post Why a real Saints QB competition is brewing appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New Orleans Saints are a team that is looking for a new identity. Kellen Moore is now a first-time head coach for the Saints, aiming to bounce back from a difficult 2024-25 season. The biggest question for the Saints right now is the quarterback room and who will emerge as the starter. It seems a real QB competition is brewing in New Orleans. Advertisement Dan Graziano wrote an ESPN article breaking down quarterback questions for all 32 teams in the NFL. When discussing the Saints, the insider wrote that the Saints are far from knowing who their starter will be. Derek Carr has retired, and Spencer Rattler is the one QB with experience on the team. That is not a great sign. However, drafting rookie Tyler Shough from Louisville is a move that the front office is loving, and Shough is already turning heads in OTAs. Here is what Graziano said about the current Saints QB situation. 'When the Saints drafted Tyler Shough in the second round and then Derek Carr retired a few months later, it certainly was fair to assume Shough would be in line to take over as the starter. And he absolutely might be the QB1. But there are people in the Saints' building who like Spencer Rattler and want to give him a chance to compete with Shough for the starting job. And so far this offseason, Rattler has shown improvement over his poor 2024 rookie performance.' Rattler was an elite college quarterback at both Oklahoma before Caleb Williams broke onto the scene, as well as at South Carolina. Rattler has an elite arm and is quick enough to make plays outside of the pocket. Shough is one year older than Rattler, so it is hard to know who will step up and become the guy. Shough was Justin Herbert's backup at Oregon in 2018; that is how long he has been playing in college. Advertisement Graziano finished his statement with what to expect. 'As of now, expect the Saints to set up training camp as a true competition between Shough and Rattler. Could Shough have the edge as the player the new coaching staff drafted with the 40th pick? Absolutely. But it doesn't sound like anything is already a done deal.'
