Downing tools: the Premier League's most infamous attempted forced exits
Van Hooijdonk led Nottingham Forest to Premier League promotion in 1997-98 by scoring 29 goals in 42 league games. Yet where there should have subsequently been optimism, things soured as the Netherlands striker became increasingly upset with the club's inability to strengthen in the market, while also selling key players in Kevin Campbell and Colin Cooper. He returned to the Netherlands in August after a transfer request was turned down, going on strike to display his irritation. Van Hooijdonk stayed fit by training with his former club NAC Breda, eventually returning to the City Ground in November to end the standoff. Forest finished bottom, were relegated and did not return to the Premier League for another 23 years.
Chelsea released a statement claiming Gallas had threatened to score own goals if was selected for the 2006-07 season opener against Manchester City and refused to play in an FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool as part of his attempts to leave the club, which he ultimately did on deadline day in September 2006, sealing a move to Arsenal. The Frenchman denied Chelsea's accusations, saying: 'If people want to hide behind false accusations in order to give a reason for why I left so they can calm down the club's supporters then they can.' Whatever the case, the defender got his way, with his switch to the Emirates allowing Ashley Cole to travel in the opposite direction.
Berbatov wanted to live his 'dream' of moving to Manchester United, but there was a problem: Tottenham did not want to sell him. Juande Ramos, the Spurs manager, called in Berbatov for a meeting to discuss the Bulgarian's future and it resulted with him being left out of the squad for a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland in August 2008. Ramos said the striker was not 'focused enough' and would not 'be good for the dressing room and the team effort'. Berbatov eventually got his way and a £31m deal was agreed with United, allowing him to make his much-desired move to Old Trafford on deadline day.
The problems for Manchester City began when Tevez did not fancy warming up in a Champions League game at Bayern Munich in September 2011, subsequently feeling the full wrath of the manager, Roberto Mancini, who had no hesitation in declaring the Argentinian 'finished' at the club. The two had never been close but the spat ended the relationship for good, with fuel thrown onto the bonfire by Tevez's agent. 'What is he apologising for?' Kia Joorabchian asked. 'It's almost like a false: 'I'm sorry.' He doesn't believe, deep down, that he did anything wrong.' Tevez's elected sabbatical in Argentina cost him £9.3m. In February he came back and apologised after a move to one of Milan, Inter and Paris Saint-Germain failed to materialise.
Sometimes it is best to take the route-one approach, unless, that is, there are TV cameras around and your desired transfer does not go through. Few will forget the sight of Odemwingie parked outside Loftus Road as he tried to seal a move from West Brom to QPR on deadline day in 2013. The Nigerian assumed a deal had been agreed but, unfortunately for him, that was not the case, leaving him with little else to do but chat with Sky Sports News via the window of his car before eventually driving back to the Midlands. 'It was hard because I was angry and it was a really tough period to go through,' Odemwingie said as he recounted the incident to the Guardian in 2024. 'It was very embarrassing in many ways.'
Berahino was hot property after scoring an impressive 20 goals for West Brom in the 2014-15 season. Mauricio Pochettino was desperate to bring the striker to Tottenham and two offers were made, both subsequently turned down by West Brom's chairman Jeremy Peace. Berahino reacted by tweeting he would never play for Peace again before going on strike. He was clearly desperate to join Spurs, but his furious attempts at doing so did not work. West Brom, and Peace in particular, dug in, and the player remained where he was, eventually moving to Stoke in 2017. The 32-year-old is currently unattached after a spell in Slovenia with Tabor Sezana. Any interest, Thomas Frank?
Payet is proof that downing tools can speed up a player's exit. The Frenchman wanted to leave West Ham in January 2017 in order to complete a move to Marseille, so stopped coming to training and refused to play for a club where he had been the undoubted star during the previous season. Payet's teammates did not like his attitude, so kicked him out of their WhatsApp group, while Slaven Bilic, West Ham's manager at the time, made it clear that Payet was still part of his plans. 'We do not want to sell him,' he said. 'We have said hundreds of times that we do not want to sell our best players. We want to keep them.' None of that made a difference, with Payet sealing a £25m transfer to the south of France at the end of the month.
They say you should never go back, and that proved to be the case following Ronaldo's surprise return to Old Trafford in 2021. Quite simply, the move was a disaster, with the Portuguese superstar simply not the player he once was. Going on to suffer an almighty fallout with Erik ten Hag was another problem. He left the stadium after being substituted in a pre-season friendly against Rayo Vallecano, twice refused to go on before walking down the tunnel in a match against Tottenham and then sat down to do that interview with Piers Morgan, in which he claimed to have been 'betrayed' by the club. There was no way back after that and Ronaldo soon joined the Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, where he remains to this day, happier and much, much richer.

Man Utd targeting three goalkeepers but unknown star could be the answer
Manchester United emerged from their opening game of the new Premier League season showing some overdue promise but were undone by the same old problems. The club have spent almost £200milliion rebuilding their attack with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha starting brightly against Arsenal as Benjamin Sesko made his debut off the bench. United are still in the market for a midfielder before the summer transfer window closes in 12 days. But Altay Bayindir's calamitous error that allowed Riccardo Calafiori to nod home Sunday's winner heightened concern over an issue that threatens to undermine any progress for Ruben Amorim's side this season. In the wake of Sunday's defeat, Amorim defended Bayindir after his error, suggesting the Turkey international had been impeded. Andre Onana, left out of the squad that day, inspired little confidence last season with nine errors leading to goals– at fault in the Europa League final against Tottenham. At 39 years old having not played a competitive game in almost four years, Tom Heaton is not the answer. Messages out of United this week have been there are no plans to sign a new goalkeeper. Another calamity this weekend against Fulham could change that. Metro's weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. United have already explored a move for Emiliano Martinez this summer with reports suggesting Amorim personally requested the arrival of the World Cup winner, twice voted the best shop stopper on the planet. With a penchant for delivering on the biggest stages, Martinez certainly has the personality to be the commanding leader in goal United need. In shot-stopping, his distribution and aerial presence, the Aston Villa star has been among the best in the Premier League in recent years with only Jordan Pickford (569) making more top flight saves than Martinez (530) since the Argentine joined Villa in 2020. But judging him solely on the eye test, there appeared to be a decline in his performances last season following on from a sublime 2023-24 campaign with the data supporting it. A save percentage of 67.9 per cent is only good enough for 14th best in the English top flight, declining from 74.4 per cent in 2022-23 when he scooped his first Lev Yashin Trophy. Only four goalkeepers conceded more than the former Arsenal youngster (45) last season. On Sunday, Bayindir was bullied in the United goal with William Saliba putting him under pressure and forcing the error in a relatively straight forward manner. Onana's reluctance to come off his line for crosses has been a constant theme during his struggles and it highlights the need for United to bring in a commanding and dominant threat in the air. In that respect, Martinez could be their man. No other goalkeeper in the Premier League stopped more crosses than the Argentine during the 2024-25 season. If you put aside the huge salary it might take to lure him in, Gianluigi Donnarumma would be the obvious candidate for United. Still just 26 years old, the Italy international is also the very definition of a big-game player for club and country with his string of saves in the knockout stages of last season's Champions League just as important as the magic woven by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele. But there is reason for caution aside from the financials. Despite his huge frame, Donnarumma can struggle with high balls with his crosses stopped percentage last season at 5% a, marginally worse than Onana's and some way short of that of Martinez. The Italian managed just four clean sheets in his 24 Ligue 1 appearances despite PSG's domestic dominance, recording a save percentage of 66.7 which leaves him right down in 15th place compared the rest of the division's shot stoppers. Signing Donnarumma on a huge salary would been in fitting of previous regimes at Old Trafford but perhaps not anymore. Instead of targeting one of Europe's established goalkeepers, an emerging name is perhaps more in line with INEOS' thinking. With that in mind, Senne Lammens could be the answer. More Trending The 23-year-old has drawn comparisons with his countryman Thibaut Courtois and is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers operating outside Europe's top five leagues, still plying his trade in Belgium with Antwerp. Similarly to Martinez, the Belgian would offer United a huge improvement dealing with crosses, boasting near identical stats to the Villa shot stopper in crossing metrics, also outranking the likes of Onana, Alisson Becker, Ederson, Jordan Pickford and Jordan Henderson. Averaging more saves per match than both Martinez and Donnarumma with a huge save percentage of 81.4 per cent, Lammens has excelled across a number of different areas. While Donnarumma and Martinez might be regarded as the penalty saving kings on the grandest stage, the Belgian is building his own fearsome reputation, stopping five spot kicks since the start of last season – more than any other goalkeeper in Europe's top 10 leagues during that period. United have three very viable targets in front of them, all within a fairly modest price range. But they are running out of time to address a problem they cannot afford to let fester any longer. Man Utd wonderkid JJ Gabriel, 14, promoted to first-team training by Ruben Amorim
Ruben Amorim has decided to hand an opportunity to JJ Gabriel, despite the Manchester United winger only being 14 years old, having been impressed by his talent Manchester United have promoted wonderkid JJ Gabriel to train with the first team after Ruben Amorim was impressed by his performances. Gabriel is just 14 years old, but has been fast-tracked in the United academy after catching the eye. The winger committed his future to United earlier in the summer, with the club's technical director Jason Wilcox playing a role in those discussions. That is unusual for an academy player so young and underlines the excitement surrounding him. Amorim was informed of his progress earlier in the summer and was shown video clips of Gabriel during United's pre-season tour of the United States. He has reportedly taken a keen interest in his development and has now met Gabriel for himself. BBC Sport says Amorim has met Gabriel at Carrington and the youngster watched the opening Premier League match of the season against Arsenal from the directors' box at Old Trafford on Sunday. He has now been told he will be given the opportunity to train with the first team on occasions this season. Amorim has been keen to assess the youngsters coming through the United academy, with many making up the numbers in training. But Gabriel is an exception simply due to his age. He made his Premier League Under-18 debut by starting Saturday's 1-0 win at Everton, but won't be able to feature in their FA Youth Cup campaign because he is still too young. Gabriel has been on the radar of United fans after scoring twice for the Under-18s in a 13-1 hammering of Leeds in April. That match saw him become the youngest ever player to feature for United's U18s and the team's manager, Darren Fletcher, is in charge of his development. 'It's important we let them develop,' Fletcher told club media recently when speaking about the development of players such as Gabriel and Kai Rooney – the 15-year-old son of club legend Wayne Rooney. 'They've got loads of development to do, but they're sponges. They want to learn. They're young boys who just enjoy football. They take on the information, we're trying to give them a platform on which to express themselves. 'And we have to recognise their age as well. We don't want them to grow up too quickly. Let them just develop. It's difficult when they're on TV, but that's part of the game and the modern world. 'We don't want to hold anybody back. If you're performing, you're going to get rewards for it. They've played because they deserve it, and they've shown they can compete and fight at this level. We believe in a variety of experiences, so it's important they play at their own age group, and it's important they get tested [at this level] and they find things tough.'

Liverpool facing potential injury crisis as Arne Slot rules out new signing
Liverpool have only played one game in the Premier League this season but have already suffered a major blow after news that right-back Jeremie Frimpong will be out for a number of weeks with a hamstring injury Liverpool boss Arne Slot has confirmed a huge blow with new signing Jeremie Frimpong set to be ruled out until after the first international break after suffering a hamstring injury. Frimpong was signed for around £30million from Bayer Leverkusen as a direct replacement for the outgoing Trent Alexander-Arnold, who joined Real Madrid after his contract expired. And the speedy right-back had impressed many fans with his displays during pre-season, with the player being substituted on the hour mark in their 4-2 win over Bournemouth on the opening day of the Premier League after complaining of a hamstring problem. But Liverpool will have to make do without their new addition for the next few weeks after his frustrating set-back, with potential replacements Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez also struggling for fitness. Bradley has only just returned from an injury issue of his own, training with the team for the first time on Thursday. However, Slot went out of his way to praise his medical staff, for ensuring Frimpong's issue didn't become more severe. "Conor trained with us for a few minutes today for the first time. Medical team was completely right about Jeremie to take him off because he's out until the end of the international break. We felt Jeremie had an issue in his hamstring - the medical team did. They were right. A good call from them as otherwise he could have been out for even longer." Slot played down the significance of the recent injury setbacks suffered by both players, saying fitness problems can happen to any player. "Jeremie has a very positive injury record," the Dutchman added. "Conor has been out once or twice last season. These things happen. We only have two injuries at the same moment but they are in the same position. Meanwhile, Slot gave another update on Joe Gomez, who has also been battling to return to the first team after a long-term injury. The former Feyenoord boss added that was impossible to avoid such a situation in defence if injuries occurred and said he couldn't sign more players in one position just in the event that players become available. "Joe Gomez hasn't had a setback but he wasn't able to train three days in a row. We will see where he is on Monday and if he can start. You can't prepare for injuries in one position - you can't have five right-backs. Although we do have three left-backs at the moment!" Should Slot determine both Bradley and Gomez aren't ready for the trip to Newcastle, he could be forced to shift either Curtis Jones or Dominik Szoboszlai there, who played right back last season and in the pre-season respectively. Liverpool have some big games coming up as they bid to defend their Premier League title. First, they face a testing trip to Newcastle on Monday before welcoming title rivals Arsenal to Anfield the following weekend.
