Morgan Boyes set to reunite with Morton teammate at Championship rival

Yahoo7 days ago

JACK BAIRD could be set to reunite with one of his former Morton teammates - just days after agreeing to join Championship rivals St Johnstone.
Saints boss Simo Valakari is looking to drag the Perth side back up to the Premiership at the first time of asking - and he's starting by casting his recruitment gaze towards Cappielow.
Boyes is closing in on a move to St Johnstone (Image: ALEX CRAIG) Defender Jack Baird has already signed a pre-contract agreement with the McDiarmid Park club to bring to an end his second spell on Sinclair Street.
And Valakari, with the assistance of former Morton boss Gus MacPherson, now St Johnstone's director of football, now looks set to add another out-of-contract Ton star to the Perth side's ranks.
Baird's defensive colleague, Morgan Boyes, now looks set to make the switch from Inverclyde to Tayside, according to The Courier.
The Tele understands that Boyes is close to finalising a deal with the east coast outfit.
It's believed that Ton boss Dougie Imrie wanted to keep the Welsh defender, who, as a left-footed centre back, is a hot commodity in the modern game.
However, the ongoing uncertainty over Morton's playing budget, and overall finances, for next season means Imrie is unable to offer any deals to out-of-contract members oif his squad.

MCT has previously said that Dalrada's financial backing is crucial to Morton being able to continue competing with the club's full-time rivals in the Championship.
Dalrada's existing three-year sponsorship deal with the club is due to come to an end on June 30.
An extraordinary general meeting of MCT members, to discuss the terms of the proposed new Dalrada deal, is due to be held on June 2.

Midfielder's Liverpool exit edges closer with Leverkusen keen

Tyler Morton Exit Edges Closer as Leverkusen Circle Again Liverpool's transfer window is moving at a dizzying pace, but amid all the headline-making names, one deal looks all but inevitable—Tyler Morton to Bayer Leverkusen. Photo: IMAGO As Anfield Watch reports, the midfielder, who came close to joining the Bundesliga champions last summer, is once again on their radar. This time, the path appears much clearer. A deal is 'nailed on,' and all signs point to a permanent move being just around the corner. Move collapsed last summer Twelve months ago, Morton was reportedly on the brink of completing a switch to Leverkusen. The move fell apart only after Martin Zubimendi rejected Liverpool, forcing the Reds to hold onto Morton for squad depth. Photo: IMAGO Had Zubimendi arrived, Morton would almost certainly have been sold. Now, with the Spanish midfielder no longer in the frame and Liverpool's midfield department packed with established and emerging talent, the door is once again open. Agent links boost chances There's an added twist this time around. Morton is represented by SEG, the same agency that works with Erik ten Hag, now the newly appointed head coach at Bayer Leverkusen. Photo IMAGO That connection cannot be ignored. SEG's influence in recent deals involving Rasmus Højlund, Sofyan Amrabat and Zidane Iqbal is well documented. And now, with Mark Flekken also set to join Leverkusen—another SEG client—the agency's fingerprints are clearly all over Leverkusen's recruitment. Advertisement Morton being next makes sense, particularly with Leverkusen expected to receive a huge financial boost from Liverpool's impending deal for Florian Wirtz. Some of that money could be recycled directly back to Merseyside. Anfield future unlikely Morton may be highly regarded in Kirkby, but at senior level, the opportunities are no longer forthcoming. A regular at Hull City last season, the 21-year-old proved he is more than ready for a top-flight challenge. Photo: IMAGO But with Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch ahead of him, and with Stefan Bajcetic returning from loan, Morton's exit feels less like a loss and more like a logical next step. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis It's always bittersweet to see a homegrown lad edge closer to the exit. Tyler Morton is no superstar, but he's everything you want in a Liverpool midfielder—composed, tidy on the ball, tactically intelligent and humble. Advertisement There's a sense that had he come through during Klopp's early rebuild, he'd have played far more often. But in a side now stacked with elite talent, there's no shame in admitting the path is blocked. The potential move to Leverkusen actually excites more than it disappoints. Xabi Alonso may be gone, but the club's upward trajectory continues, and if Erik ten Hag does want to build around young, technically gifted players, Morton fits the bill. The SEG connection adds another layer. It's the kind of detail that makes you feel like the stars are aligning for this one. Morton needs to play. Leverkusen need to replace departing midfielders. Liverpool need to keep the squad lean. If Morton does move to Germany, he won't just be another youth product heading out the door. He'll be a player going to one of Europe's most ambitious clubs. That alone should spark a bit of pride in all of us.
