Jamie Gittens not expected to make Chelsea transfer pre-Club World Cup
Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens is not expected to move to Chelsea before the Club World Cup, while the London club have ended their interest in signing AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan this summer. The Athletic reported on Saturday that Chelsea had submitted an official proposal to sign Gittens, having agreed a seven-year contract with the player. The Premier League side were keen to strike a deal that would allow the 20-year-old to feature for them in the upcoming tournament in the United States. Advertisement But ahead of Tuesday's registration deadline (7pm BST, 2pm ET), a move is not expected to materialise with no club-to-club agreement reached and Chelsea so far unwilling to meet Dortmund's asking price. Chelsea remain relaxed on the situation with the summer transfer window opening again on June 16 and not closing until September 1. Should an agreement be found mid-tournament, Chelsea could register Gittens for the knockout stages, provided they get there and that Gittens hadn't featured in the competition previously. Chelsea had considered a move for Maignan and, as The Athletic reported, the 30-year-old France international told his agent he wanted to move to Stamford Bridge. But Chelsea did not want to overpay for the goalkeeper, who has 12 months left on his contract and will be able to negotiate a free transfer with foreign clubs from January onwards. Chelsea never made an official bid for Maignan but told Milan that they were willing to spend a maximum of €15m. The London club saw the €20m sale of Christian Pulisic to Milan in 2023 as part of their reasoning. The United States international also had a year remaining on his contract, but was six years younger and plays in a position which commands higher fees. However, Milan valued their goalkeeper at a higher fee and so Chelsea have decided to walk away. Chelsea are happy with the quartet of keepers they have to choose from at the FIFA Club World Cup in Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic (who is returning from loan at Strasbourg) and Mike Penders, the Genk 19-year-old a deal was agreed for in advance last summer. Head coach Enzo Maresca did not ask Chelsea to sign Maignan and the quartet will battle it out in America to be first choice. Chelsea are, though, expecting to sell one of Sanchez or Petrovic during the window, with another of the goalkeepers earmarked to join Strasbourg on loan. Back-up Marcus Bettinelli is set to join Manchester City for an undisclosed fee. The Athletic previously reported that Chelsea were looking to sign a striker and a right-footed winger this summer, with Gittens emerging as a priority target after recording 12 goals and five assists in 48 matches for Dortmund during the 2024-25 campaign. Liam Delap was signed from Ipswich Town in a £30m deal last week and will play at the Club World Cup with Andrey Santos, who is returning from a season-long loan at Strasbourg, and new signings Dario Essugo, Kendry Paez and Mamadou Sarr joining the squad in the U.S. after previously agreeing moves. Chelsea kick off their campaign in the newly-expanded tournament against Los Angeles FC on June 16 before games with Flamengo (June 20) and ES Tunis (June 24). (Ina Fassbender/AFP via Getty Images)

Chelsea's negotiations with AC Milan for Mike Maignan breakdown
According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Mike Maignan's (29) move from AC Milan to Chelsea is off, following a breakdown in negotiations between the Premier League side and their Serie A counterparts. The France international had been keen to join the London club, with reports suggesting that the goalkeeper had given Milan an ultimatum by refusing to sign a contract extension: in effect, to either sell him now or risk losing him for free in twelve months at the end of his current deal. Advertisement This situation had created a conflict in how Chelsea and Milan valued the player. Chelsea believed that he was worth around €10 million, while the Italian club believed he should still be worth €30 million. Romano writes that Chelsea further did not want to pay the 'FIFA Club World Cup tax' (meaning they did not want to pay an inflated price so that the player would be in their squad ahead of the upcoming competition), and are content to contest the revamped tournament with their current options. Chelsea call off Mike Maignan transfer talks with AC Milan
Chelsea have reportedly put an end to transfer negotiations with AC Milan over a deal for Mike Maignan. The Blues were looking to sign a new starting goalkeeper ahead of the Fifa Club World Cup, which kicks off in the United States next week. Advertisement A specially designated transfer window was opened between 1 June and 10 June so that participating teams could sign new players before the competition gets underway. Chelsea call off Mike Maignan transfer talks with AC Milan Chelsea are one of several clubs trying to get deals done before Tuesday's deadline, but have seemingly given up on signing Maignan for now. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims that the south west London outfit are 'not willing' to meet Milan's asking price as they refuse to pay a Club World Cup 'tax'. It had been previously reported that Chelsea would not pay more than £12.6 million (€15m) for a player who will turn 30 in July. Advertisement Maignan's contract with Milan expires in 2026, meaning he will be a free agent next summer unless he agrees to renew terms.
