CBFC made demands for Janaki name change through informal ways: Filmmaker M.B. Padmakumar

The Hindu12 hours ago

One of the things that filmmaker M.B. Padmakumar remembers from several interactions with Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) officials for the certification of his upcoming film Token Number is the lack of any official communication regarding the alleged issues related to the film. Although his film was cleared by the regional office of the CBFC, censor officials from the CBFC headquarters in Mumbai refused to certify the film until he changed the name of either of the protagonists - Janaki and Abraham.
'All the communication regarding the name change happened informally. If the Chairperson had any objection, the CBFC should have put it down in writing. When I asked the officials, they said that there would be no such official communication. Later, I was informed that the CEO will call me, but this call was through WhatsApp to prevent call recording,' Mr. Padmakumar tells The Hindu. Mr. Padmakumar himself was part of the CBFC regional committee until two months ago.
The filmmaker went public with his ordeal only after the controversy broke out on Saturday over the CBFC demanding the makers of the film JSK - Janaki Vs State of Kerala, starring Union Minister Suresh Gopi, to change the title of the film. Both films faced an issue over the name 'Janaki'. Mr. Padmakumar's film explores the unlikely friendship between 65-year old Janaki and 72-year old Abraham. 'Janaki breaks out of the behaviour that the society expects from a senior citizen, who is not supposed to have any dream of her own. Abraham also finds himself in the same boat. The film explores what happens when they meet each other by chance,' he says.
However, the censor officials found it a problem that a person named Janaki, the other name of Hindu goddess Sita, had anything to do with someone named Abraham. He was asked to change either of the names and was even given a list of possible names.
'I tried to reach out to them through various leaders, but after the initial promises, most of them turned hostile. After this, I sent an official email to the Union Minister of Broadcasting, which angered them further. I gave up as I was broken mentally and decided to change the name Janaki to Jayanthi, because the lip sync would match. However, the officials even objected to that name. At that point, I said that I won't be able to give in. I was ready for the film not even getting released. Finally, they agreed to the name change and issued the certification on June 9,' says Mr. Padmakumar who debuted with the award winning My Life Partner in 2014.

Ashoke Pandit calls Diljit Dosanjh

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 23 (ANI): Amid the ongoing backlash surrounding Diljit Dosanjh's 'Sardaar Ji 3', filmmaker Ashoke Pandit has come forward to share his views and said that 'we are appealing to our producer bodies that please don't cast him(Diljit Dosanjh)'. Diljit has found himself on the receiving end of a social media backlash after the trailer of his upcoming Punjabi film, 'Sardaar Ji 3', which features Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, dropped online. Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has sent a letter to the Chairperson, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), to 'withhold certification of the Film 'Sardaarji 3' containing Pakistani artists.' The controversy comes in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, followed by India's Operation Sindoor on May 7, in which air strikes were carried out on terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Pakistani artists, including Hania Aamir, had their social media accounts made no longer accessible in India following the ghastly Pahalgam attack. Since the 2019 Pulwama attack, which claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel, FWICE has consistently enforced a blanket ban on Pakistani artists, including actors, musicians, and technicians, within the Indian film industry. In a conversation with ANI, Pandit talked about the entire controversy surrounding Diljit and said, 'Federation of Western India Cine Employees had issued a notice of non-cooperation after the Pulwama attack. All the people will not participate with any Pakistani performer. Be it a producer, a director, a singer or a music director. No craft will involve them. If a technician works with them, it's not only actors or performers, even the technicians will be boycotted. We issued a notice of non-cooperation on the first day of the Pulwama attack. After that, we reiterated all the attacks, that our notice is still valid. We have not changed or withdrawn it. When the trailer of 'Sardaar Ji 3', was released, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees, which is the mother body of 36 crafts, immediately wrote a letter to CBFC and I & B Ministry, that this film should not get a census certificate, and it should not be released here.' 'Hopefully, CBFC will agree with us, ' he continued, 'Because I& B Ministry itself issued a notice, in which they said that if anyone participates with a Pakistani performer, we will not let his things come out. They will not get permission.' He called the singer-actor a 'compulsive, regular lawbreaker', who has always 'promoted Pakistani performers', saying, 'The matter is very serious because Diljit Dosanjh is a compulsive, regular lawbreaker, as far as our industry is concerned. He has always promoted Pakistani performers, Pakistani singers, Pakistani actors. He knows the reason. When the industry is appealing to him, and there is no need to appeal to the industry, when it comes to the nation, the integrity of the nation, the internal security of the nation, even then, this person makes the same mistake again and again.' 'The matter is very serious, because Diljit Dosanjh is a compulsive, regular lawbreaker, as far as our industry is concerned. He has always promoted Pakistani performers, Pakistani singers, Pakistani actors. He knows the reason. When the industry is appealing to him, and there is no need to appeal to the industry, when it comes to the nation, the integrity of the nation, the internal security of the nation, even then, this person makes the same mistake again and again. We will issue another notice, where we are appealing to our producer bodies, to all the members of the producer association, that please don't cast him, please don't work with him. And apart from this, all the event companies, we are writing to them, that in any of their events, don't let him participate, don't hire his services. It is very important to boycott him from this country...,' added the filmmaker. Meanwhile, sharing the trailer of the horror-comedy franchise on his Instagram on Monday, Diljit announced that the film will release exclusively overseas on June 27. Diljit captioned the trailer post, 'Sardaar Ji 3 releasing 27th June OVERSEAS only. FADH LAO BHOOND DIAN LATTAN.' The comments section of the actor's social media platform quickly turned into a storm of angry reactions, with Indian netizens expressing their disappointment over his decision to work with a Pakistani artist, amidst tensions between the two countries. The trailer of 'Sardaar Ji 3' is currently not on YouTube India but has been shared by Diljit on his Instagram page. (ANI)

Kannappa will have a runtime of around Two hours and 50 minutes: Editor Anthony Gonsalvez

One of the country's top editors Antony Gonsalvez, who is also the editor of the pan-Indian magnum opus, 'Kannappa', has now disclosed that the run time of the devotional, historical film would be around two hours and 50 minutes. Talking to IANS on the sidelines of a pre-release event organised by the film's makers in Chennai on Monday, Anthony Gonsalvez said that the film's run time would be around 2 hours and 50 minutes but the film wouldn't appear long as the story would keep moving at a brisk pace. "There are three tracks happening simultaneously in the film. The first one is about an atheist turning a believer and then a devotee. Then there is a romantic track that is happening. The third track is about an external threat to the clan. So, between the three tracks, the story will move at a brisk pace, he explained. Scheduled to hit theatres worldwide on June 27, Kannappa has triggered huge expectations in fans and film buffs. The film, which has been directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, has Vishnu Manchu playing the titular role of Thinnadu(Kannappa), the fearless warrior-turned-devotee who transformed into the ultimate devotee of Lord Shiva. Akshay Kumar essays the role of Lord Shiva, while Mohanlal commands attention as Kirata. Prabhas sets the stage for an unforgettable cinematic experience with his role of Rudra. Fans crash the CBFC website for Vijay's 'Beast' censor details Talking about the film, Vishnu Manchu, had, in a statement earlier, said, "This film is incredibly close to my heart. It brings to life a historical tale that is often referred to as mythology. By Lord Shiva's blessings, everything has fallen into place, from the breathtaking locations to the incredible star cast." Director Mukesh Kumar Singh had said, "'Kannappa' is more than just a story; it is a tribute to faith, devotion, and the power of transformation. Every frame has been meticulously crafted to bring this legendary tale to life in a way that resonates with modern audiences while staying true to its roots. We are excited for the world to experience the grandeur of 'Kannappa'."
