‘Illegal dump beside substation worrying'

AN illegal dumpsite along Bukit Jalil Highway is raising concerns as it is located next to a Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) main substation.
Bukit Jalil Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Azhar Harun said the site's close proximity to TNB cables and pylons was worrying.
'If a fire breaks out at the dumpsite, it might spread next door and turn into an electrical fire which is more dangerous and difficult to extinguish.
'Unlike conventional fire-fighting methods, we will need to use foam to put out the fire if nearby electrical components are affected.
'Furthermore, there is also no water source around the area,' he told StarMetro.
Mohd Azhar said he had also received complaints from firefighters about mosquitoes in the vicinity.
'Our quarters are located in between the fire and rescue station and the dumping site. Mohd Azhar says complaints to the authorities about the illegal dumpsite have not been acted on.
'From there, we can see that rubbish is being dumped behind, which is very near to a river tributary,' he said.
From the top floor of the 10-storey quarters, StarMetro saw piles of rubbish stacked up.
Another pile was scattered behind, next to the river.
According to firefighters at the station, lorries could be seen dumping rubbish while some vehicles were spotted collecting the rubbish.
Mohd Azhar said he had highlighted the matter to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), the Environment Department (DOE), and Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur Lands and Mines Office (PTGWP) since last year but not much had been done.
A letter from PTGWP dated March 11, to the Fire and Rescue Department Station chief, stated an investigation on March 6 determined the dumpsite was operating illegally.
It also stated an eviction notice was issued to the owner on Sept 11, 2024, for occupying state land unlawfully under Section 425(1) of the National Land Code 1965.
When contacted, PTGWP reiterated the site had been issued an eviction notice.
However, no enforcement action had been taken since.
DBKL in a letter on March 25 said no investigations were conducted as they could not find the precise location of the dumpsite.
StarMetro had reached out to DBKL several times for comments but had received no response at press time.

The company also reminded the public to be responsible with the content they share online. 'We strongly advise the public to avoid sharing unverified information,' it said. For accurate and updated information, TNB urged consumers to refer only to official government and TNB platforms for any updates on electricity tariffs. Last December, TNB proposed a new tariff schedule with a base tariff of 45.62 sen per kilowatt-hour for Peninsular Malaysia under Regulatory Period 4 (RP4), for implementation from July 1, 2025. The base tariff under RP3 had been set at 39.95 sen/kWh between 2022 and 2024. Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof then said no decision had been made on the new tariff as the government was still finalising the matter. Fadillah is also the energy transition and water transformation minister.

Govt mulls housing above train stations to ease congestion
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government is reviewing a proposal to build housing projects above railway stations to help ease traffic congestion. The plan is being studied with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and regulatory amendments are in progress. "This means the (public housing) project would be built above (the railway station). It will include commercial housing.... not all units will be public housing, but some of them will be. This are among the measures that will be taken (to ease traffic congestion)," he said at the Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum hosted by the Higher Education Ministry. Also present at the forum were Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd president and group chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah and Universiti Putra Malaysia vice-chancellor Datuk Professor Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. Anwar also addressed the construction of vertical schools under the Kota Madani development, saying they will follow strict safety standards and improved designs. "In Kota Madani Putrajaya, vertical schools will indeed be introduced, and parking will be underground. The residential level will be a proper garden, while the school will be located above. If a school has a lift, it will be dedicated for school use only. So, one can walk from level 14 down to the kindergarten or school, but the construction will be subject to strict conditions," he said. He said the Kota Madani project in Penang will involve 10,000 housing units in Seberang Jaya and Batu Kawan, in South and Central Seberang Perai respectively. "This will include vertical schools, fire stations, and clinics all within the vicinity, so people won't have to bear transportation costs. Otherwise, the MRT won't be viable as people won't use it. This can help reduce the burden on public transportation," he said. Meanwhile, Loke said his ministry and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government are reviewing a plan to reduce or remove parking spaces in flats near railway stations. He said the plan requires policy amendments and has not yet been finalised.

Police track down cable theft suspect, seize vehicle in Sungai Petani
GEORGE TOWN: A swift police operation to track down a suspect involved in the theft of Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) cables led to the seizure of a pickup truck in the Permata Hill Park residential area in Bedong, Sungai Petani, Kedah, early this morning. Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the incident occurred at around 3.44am when police received information about a cable theft at Flat Taman Nusantara here. "A police team was immediately dispatched to the scene and found that the vehicle, believed to have been used by the suspect, had fled towards Lebuhraya Tun Lim Chong Eu. "A patrol car managed to locate and pursue the suspect's vehicle from the entry ramp of the first Penang Bridge heading towards Seberang Prai, before the suspect accelerated onto the North-South Expressway heading north," he said in a statement today. Abdul Rozak said police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect refused to comply and continued to flee. "The suspect eventually lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a ditch beside the Permata Hill Park residential area in Bedong. "The suspect then fled into a nearby forested area. "An inspection of the vehicle found several tools believed to have been used to cut cables, as well as several cut cables in the back of the vehicle," he added. Abdul Rozak said the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft. Police are actively tracking down the suspect.
