Father stabbed 11 times protecting his family from armed intruders
A family, including two children, have been terrorised by a group of intruders during a home invasion which left a man seriously injured.
Five people allegedly broke into a home on Oxford St in Kew East, Melbourne, about 4am on Sunday.
They arrived in a car, jumped over a front fence and smashed the window of a study to get inside.
A husband and wife were awoken by the sound and confronted by the offenders.
Two of the offenders were allegedly armed with a machete, a knife and garden sheers belonging to the family.
The couple were put in separate rooms, with the 34-year-old woman kept in the room where her children, aged two and three, were sleeping.
A scuffle broke out between the 39-year-old husband and the offenders, during which he was stabbed 11 times suffering injuries to his head, face and arms.
'They're not used to people fighting back, and this homeowner fought back,' Detective Sergeant Leeanne Trusler said.
The man's parents, who were also living at the home, went to his aid but were also attacked.
At one point the wife had come out of the room with her children to check on her husband, Trusler said.
One of the offenders pointed a knife at her and demanded she go back inside the room.
'These males have then asked the family if there's a safe inside the house, which they said there wasn't,' Trusler said. Police at the scene. Credit: 7NEWS Police arrested three people however are still hunting for the remaining offenders. Credit: 7NEWS
The intruders then left the home via the garage, allegedly jumping in the family's BMW.
A fifth offender left the home in the car the intruders all initially came in.
About 30 minutes later, the BMW was involved in a crash in Sunshine, with the stolen car found dumped on Christie St in Deer Park.
Three people, a 17-year-old boy, 24-year-old Caroline Springs man and a 16-year-old boy, were arrested a short time later on Hamilton St.
The 39-year-old father who fought back was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
He suffered a fractured arm, will require surgery to his eye and was treated for his stab wounds.
The 34-year-old wife and mother was treated for minor injuries while her in-laws, aged 69 and 70-years-old, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The grandparents have since been discharged from hospital.

Trusler said there was nothing to indicate the attack on the family was premeditated.
She said a home invasion like this was 'different' and that usually intruders will just sneak into home, steal what they want, and then sneak out.
'I've never seen anything like this, this is awful. A family … asleep in their home, nearly four o'clock in the morning, the house is secure, they're meant to be safe,' Trusler said.
'There's no logic.
'They've just chosen this house and they've just destroyed a family.'
The two children slept through the ordeal, Trusler said.
She said the family were struggling however their neighbours were being extremely supportive.
'You should be safe, you shouldn't be disrespected in your home and having people come in at that time of night and doing that to your family, I don't know how I'd be if that was my family,' Trusler said.
On Sunday night, a 24-year-old man and two teenagers, aged 17 and 16, were all charged with aggravated home invasion, intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing serious injury, false imprisonment, theft of mobile phone and theft of motor vehicle.
They were all remanded to appear in court at a later date.
The other offenders remain on the run.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has CCTV/dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Suspected arson attack in Adelaide after fire destroys Indian takeaway store Dial a Curry
An Indian takeaway store in Adelaide's southern suburbs has become a victim to a suspected arson attack. Dial a Curry on Marion Road, South Plympton, was ablaze when emergency services arrived at the scene about 4:30am on Wednesday. Flames were coming out of the roof and the building deemed too 'dangerous' as the ceiling began to collapse. The owners of the business raced to the store, which could not be saved. Owner Mohit Gupta told 7NEWS that he is in disbelief. 'I can't believe what happened. I received a call from police around 5 o'clock (and) they said the whole building set on fire,' he said. MFS firefighter Phill Ross told 7NEWS that crews entered safely through the back of the building. 'In the front it was too dangerous to get in,' he said. 'Our main operation was aerial firefighting.' It took firefighters over an hour to bring the inferno under control. CCTV footage shows two men running away just as the fire took hold. Moments earlier, the men were seen on the restaurant's roof, where it is believed the blaze started. Gupta's brother, Rohit, believes the CCTV cameras were tampered with before the fire. 'The first camera on the building, they break the camera,' he told 7NEWS. 'The second one, they damaged the camera. The third one, they turned the camera face down.' A dozen workers will now be moved to Dial a Curry's two other stores at Enfield and Croydon Park. Damage has been estimated at about $400,000.

‘They were in the air': schoolgirls hit by fishtailing car in terrifying crash in Bellbird Park, Ipswich
Three schoolgirls have miraculously escaped with their lives after an out-of-control car ploughed into them as they walked home from school with the terrifying moment was captured on CCTV. Initial investigations indicate about 3.30pm, a white Ford Falcon allegedly struck three pedestrians on Harris Street in Bellbird Park, Ipswich, before crashing through a fence and into a tree, Queensland Police Service (QPS) said. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Car fishtails into school girls on sidewalk The footage shows the moment the car loses control, fishtailing down the street with tyres screeching before veering up onto the footpath into the group. Seconds later, a panicked mother's voice pierces the chaos. 'You just hit my daughter!' Jade Newton's daughters and a friend were just metres from home. She had just turned onto the street when she spotted the car skidding. 'I seen the car, I seen them losing control ... and I remembered the girls were on the footpath,' she told 7NEWS. 'I looked over and my daughters were in the air.' Miraculously, all three girls survived nearly unharmed, with only one sustaining minor injuries. Kiarrah Buttery, Newton's daughter, has only a sore arm. 'All I could see was the car coming towards us,' Kiaarrah said. 'So our friend who was walking with us — my first instinct was just to get them out of the way.' Teenage driver behind the wheel Behind the wheel of the Ford Falcon was a teenage boy, a red P-plater, reportedly with two friends in the car. Jade's partner, Eligh Bryett, said it looked like reckless showing off. 'He had two friends with him so I can only assume he was showing off.' 'It was just ... unimaginable.' While the physical injuries were minor, the fear and trauma remain raw for Newton and her daughters. 'You get behind the wheel of a car, you're putting everybody else's lives around you in your hands,' Newton said. Kirrah's younger sister Delilah was one of the girls hit. However, she expressed more concern for the driver than herself. 'I was scared that Mum was going to hurt that boy ... he's just in high school.' 'I didn't want his mum to ground him.' Newton said she usually isn't spiritual, but the close call it made her think. 'Normally I'd say guardian angels are just a load of crap, but somebody was watching over them.' Investigations into the circumstance of the incident are ongoing.

Shocking footage shows moment car ploughs into girls on footpath in Bellbird Park, south-east Queensland
Terrifying footage has emerged of the moment three young girls were struck by an out-of-control car on a footpath near Brisbane. The girls were walking along Harry Street in Bellbird Park last week when a Ford Falcon slid out of control and collided with the children. In CCTV footage of the collision, one of the girls was thrown into the air as the car crashes into them, with a loud bang heard as the vehicle then careens through a metal fence and into a tree. Screams can be heard as passers-by rush over to the trio. Two of the girls were taken to hospital following the collision, along with the car's teen driver, who was a P-plater. Police's initial investigations indicate a Ford Falcon allegedly struck three pedestrians before it crashed about 3.30pm on August 12. Queensland Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, a spokesman told The mother of two of the girls, Jade Newton, was just a few metres away from the crash scene and told 7News she had looked over to see her daughters "in the air". "I'd seen the car, seen them losing control and then I remember that the girls were on the footpath," Ms Newton said. Kiarrah Buttery, one of the girls who was injured, said she could see the car coming before it struck and that her "first instinct" was to try and get her friend "out of the way". The Queensland Ambulance Service said four people were assessed by paramedics at the scene, and two girls, both in a stable condition were taken to Queensland Children's Hospital with minor injuries. The person behind the wheel, who was a male teenager, was taken to Ipswich Hospital in a stable condition, the statement said. A third girl was uninjured and did not require hospitalisation.
