BSL's special-grade steel powers Navy warfare

Bokaro: The Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has marked another significant step in India's journey towards defence self-reliance by supplying special-grade steel for the Navy's first indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), INS Arnala, which was inducted into service on June 18, it said in a statement.
Out of the 3,500 tonnes of special steel supplied by
SAIL
for the ASW-SWC project, BSL contributed 3,100 tonnes. This special-grade steel was used not only in INS Arnala but also in seven other warships under construction at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), showcasing BSL's critical role in strengthening India's naval capabilities, said a SAIL official.
This move reinforces SAIL's role in advancing the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) mission. By reducing reliance on imported materials, BSL is contributing to a robust and indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Earlier, SAIL-BSL provided special steel for INS Vikrant, INS Vindhyagiri, INS Nilgiri, and INS Surat.

NMC directs medical colleges to observe Anti-Ragging Day on August 12
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a notice asking all medical institutions under its purview to observe Anti-Ragging Day on August 12, followed by Anti-Ragging Week from August 12 to August 18. The directive is in line with the advisory issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on July 22. New students, parents to sign anti-ragging declarations: DU issues fresh guidelines According to the NMC, the observance is part of ongoing efforts to implement the anti-ragging framework laid out by the UGC. 'These regulations are mandatory,' the NMC stated in its notice, adding that all higher educational institutions are required to ensure 'strict compliance' with the guidelines, including 'monitoring mechanisms' outlined in the regulations. As per the UGC advisory, higher education institutions have been encouraged to conduct a range of activities during the Anti-Ragging Week. These include inaugural ceremonies to mark the occasion, and student-led competitions such as slogan writing, essay writing, poster making, photography contests, street plays, and debates on anti-ragging themes. Institutions have also been advised to recognise participation by awarding certificates and prizes to students involved in these campaigns. UGC releases advisory on anti-ragging; asks colleges, universities to fill compliance Colleges and universities have also been encouraged to promote student participation in the National Contest 2025, which focuses on digital posters, short videos, and reels highlighting anti-ragging messages. Details about the categories, deadlines, and award criteria are available on the dedicated anti-ragging portal by UGC at The advisory further adds that institutions may run digital campaigns, post activity updates on social media, and include video messages from heads of institutions promoting anti-ragging messages. 'Awareness activities like workshops, seminars, interactive sessions, and creative avenues such as selfie corners may be set up on campus,' the UGC has suggested. In addition to offline activities, institutions are advised to screen short films and awareness videos available on the UGC's anti-ragging website for both students and faculty members. The UGC has also instructed universities and other governing institutions to forward the advisory to all affiliated colleges and ensure participation in the observance of Anti-Ragging Day and Week. This is part of the Commission's broader objective to reinforce preventive education and build safer campus environments across the country.

Ranchi: Urging citizens to embrace indigenous textiles in their daily lives, governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Thursday said handloom is not just a craft but a symbol of the country's cultural identity and the foundation of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Gangwar addressed an event held at Doranda College to mark the National Handloom Day where he said, "Every thread, every yarn tells stories of our traditions and folklore. Handloom is a celebration of our civilization and a source of economic empowerment." The event was organised by the Weavers Development and Research Organisation (WDRO) and Bunkar Prakoshth. This year's theme for National Handloom Day was "Weaving Innovation into Tradition. " The governor said campaigns such as Vocal for Local and Handloom for Home have brought renewed respect for traditional crafts. "Let us not treat 'Handloom for Home' as a mere slogan but adopt it as a lifestyle. This will be the true tribute to our weaver's labour," he said. Gangwar also recalled his stint as the Union minister of textiles where he worked closely on skill development, technical support, and market linkages for the country's artisans. Praising the state's distinctive handloom legacy including Tussar silk and katha embroidery, Gangwar said the crafts have carved a niche in international markets. Shipra Kumari, Head of the Tribal Fashion Department at Ranchi University, said, "We observe National Handloom Day on August 7 because it marks the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905, a historical milestone when people united to boycott foreign goods and revive indigenous industries. Handloom played a pivotal role in that movement, symbolising resistance, self-reliance, and national pride." She further added, "From Godda to Chaibasa, our state is home to clusters of skilled weavers who carry forward techniques passed down through generations. The distinctive katha embroidery and tribal motifs woven here reflect the region's identity and deserve global recognition. National Handloom Day is a reminder to honour this craftsmanship and integrate it into modern, sustainable fashion."
