Sabah's cocoa in KitKat
Published on: Wednesday, June 04, 2025
Published on: Wed, Jun 04, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: Nestlé Malaysia is transforming Sabah's rich cocoa farming heritage into world-class confectionery products, with the company's latest innovation, KitKat® Dark Borneo, leading the charge in revitalising the State's cocoa industry. The single-origin chocolate, crafted exclusively from cocoa beans grown in Sabah and Sarawak, represents a significant milestone in bringing North Borneo's agricultural dedication to global markets. 'We are excited to transform the dedication of North Borneo's farmers into innovative products that bring joy to Malaysians and our consumers worldwide, just as we have with KitKat® Dark Borneo – now introduced in a special ice cream edition that celebrates Malaysia's cocoa heritage and promising future,' said Nestlé Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Juan Aranols. Crafted with 100 per cent responsibly sourced cocoa beans grown in the lush volcanic soil and tropical climate of Sabah and Sarawak, the KitKat® Dark Borneo is a single-origin chocolate that truly reflects Malaysia's rich heritage in cocoa craftsmanship. It delivers a perfectly balanced flavour, not too bitter, not too sweet, as a result of the careful fermentation and sun-drying methods used for the cocoa beans. KitKat® Dark Borneo has also been honoured with the NielsenIQ (NIQ) BASES Breakthrough Innovation Award 2024, a recognition that highlights both the success of the product and the growing appreciation for single-origin chocolate among consumers. The product represents more than just confectionery innovation, it embodies Nestlé's ambitious plan to source 10,000 metric tonnes of cocoa from local Malaysian farms by 2034. This initiative aims to revitalise Malaysia's cocoa farming industry, particularly benefiting communities in Sabah and Sarawak where ideal growing conditions exist. Through the Nestlé Borneo Cocoa Initiative launched in 2023, the company has partnered with the Malaysian Cocoa Board to expand its Farmer Connect program to East Malaysia. The initiative focuses on regenerative farming practices including agroforestry, intercropping, and soil health management to enhance yields while protecting natural ecosystems. The 52 per cent cocoa content chocolate is manufactured at Nestlé's Halal-certified Chembong Industrial Complex in Negeri Sembilan, one of Asia's largest confectionery and ice cream plants. The facility serves as a crucial export hub, supplying Halal KitKat® products to Asean markets and beyond while implementing significant sustainability measures, including biomass boilers powered by renewable energy sources. With Malaysia's cocoa processing sector generating RM15 billion in exports in 2024, primarily through imported beans, the KitKat® Dark Borneo initiative represents a strategic shift toward developing local cocoa production capabilities. The success of this single-origin chocolate, now expanded into an ice cream variant, demonstrates the potential for Malaysian cocoa to compete on the global stage while supporting local farming communities. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Paramount still keen on foreign markets
Paramount Corp Bhd group chief executive officer Jeffrey Chew. SHAH ALAM: Property developer Paramount Corp Bhd remains committed to overseas property investment amid market uncertainty and Eco World International Bhd 's (EWI) plans to re-enter the Malaysian property scene. In May 2024, Paramount became a major shareholder of EWI after acquiring a 21.54% stake in the international property developer for a cash consideration of RM170.61mil. Loss-making EWI focuses on international property development, mainly in Britain and Australia, but had recently announced plans to venture into the local market. Group chief executive officer Jeffrey Chew said EWI's decision to tap into the local market does not divert Paramount's objective of diversifying its earnings base and expanding property development activity overseas. 'I think our objective has always been to keep some assets outside of Malaysia. The fact that EWI has actually decided to launch in Malaysia does not mean that they are going to get rid of all the overseas projects. 'In a way, it still does meet our objective and original intonation of having assets outside of Malaysia,' he told the media during a briefing after Paramount's 55th AGM, yesterday. Chew noted that if EWI were to launch projects locally, revenue recognition would likely be faster compared to markets such as Britain or Australia. He said Paramount sees long-term value in maintaining its investment in EWI, maintaining a positive outlook over the next few years. On Paramount's broader overseas investment strategy, Chew said that the group tries to 'not put all its eggs in one basket' and continues to explore new opportunities. He acknowledged that earlier projects, including a venture in Bangkok, had underperformed due to post-pandemic market conditions. As a result, Paramount is now focusing on lower-risk, structured international investments that offer fixed returns and defined exit mechanisms. To date, Paramount has invested in six international property projects across Australia, Britain and the United States. In line with its updated investment approach, the group also revised its international profit contribution target to 20%, down from the earlier goal of 30%. He said the company was also working to improve internal performance metrics. 'We've grown our return on equity (ROE) from just over 2% a few years ago to 7.2% today, one of the highest in the domestic property sector. Our aim is to reach double-digit ROE in the next few years by improving operational efficiency, shortening development cycles and managing land acquisition more strategically,' he added. Looking ahead, Paramount remains confident in its ability to achieve its sales target of RM1.5bil, supported by the robust demand in the property market, specifically for residential property. Paramount posted a net profit of RM14.43mil or a basic earnings per share of 2.32 sen for the first quarter of this year (1Q25). This was higher from the RM7.71mil or 1.24 sen in the same quarter of the preceding year. Revenue also increased from RM172.61mil to RM217.84mil.

Business awards launched to promote entrepreneurial excellence
PETALING JAYA: With the theme of 'Powering Tomorrow: Driving Sustainable Growth' the Star Outstanding Business Awards 2025 continues to recognise and honour businesses and entrepreneurs that have excelled in their quest for success and achievement. Launched at Menara Star on June 5, the event was attended by sponsors and partners, with Star Media Group (SMG) chief executive officer (CEO) Chan Seng Fatt at the helm, together with chief operating officer Lydia Wang. The event was also graced by SOBA 2025 sponsors Credit Guarantee Corp Malaysia Bhd (CGC), PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd (PKT Logistics), RHB Bank Bhd (RHB Bank) and U Mobile Sdn Bhd (U Mobile), together with official trade promotion partner Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade), as well as the awards' strategic and working partners. In his welcome speech Chan pointed out that since Malaysia officially assumed the Asean chairmanship on Jan 1 this year, the country is at a strategic inflection point in its regional journey. 'This leadership role serves as a powerful springboard to strengthen regional integration, enhance market diversification and advance economic diplomacy,' he said. This presents local businesses the opportunity to venture into new markets on a global scale. 'At the same time, we are navigating a rapidly evolving business landscape – driven by technological disruption, shifting consumer expectations and the increasing imperative for sustainable practices. 'In this new era, agility, foresight and innovation will distinguish those who endure from those who lead,' he cautioned. In a statement, CGC president and CEO Datuk Mohd Zamree Mohd Ishak emphasised that CGC is committed to empowering Malaysian micro SMEs (small and medium enterprises) and supporting platforms like SOBA 2025 reflects that mission. 'By recognising SME excellence, we highlight deserving businesses that may benefit from greater access to financing.' PKT Logistics chief revenue officer Kuan Eu Jin said: 'PKT is a homegrown company and was once an SME. Through ups and downs, we learnt a lot along the way and feel honoured to be able to share it on such a celebrated event like SOBA.' He advised that in times of uncertainty, SMEs should be able to flex and adapt to the situation, that they should stay close to the powers of the market and innovate a way out or adapt to changing needs. For RHB Bank, group corporate and business banking managing director Wendy Ting said: 'RHB's continued support for SOBA and similar platforms reflects our commitment to advancing SME excellence as a national economic priority'. She also shared that for businesses to stay competitive in the current economic climate, they should embrace digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI), invest in sustainability and green growth, enhance their cybersecurity and data resilience, prioritise human capital and upskilling and leverage government and private sector support. U Mobile chief information officer Neil Tomkinson said: 'SOBA is a timely platform to spotlight how SMEs are adapting to major shifts in tech and customer expectations.' He added that in 2025, trends like Al enablement, cybersecurity, and digital agility will determine business longevity and U Mobile is ready to lead businesses on their journey. Matrade senior director of Strategic Planning Division, Remee Yaakub noted that 'SMEs are the backbone of Malaysia's economy, contributing significantly to job creation, innovation and exports. 'By supporting platforms like SOBA, we not only recognise outstanding achievements but also inspire more SMEs to adopt best practices, strive for global competitiveness, and drive the nation's trade performance.' The launch revealed knowledge-sharing platforms, the SOBA LABs, will continue to offer insights from seasoned business leaders. Those interested can also look forward to SOBA Elevate, an initiative that presents actionable strategies, networking opportunities and more. The launch also announced six SOBA ambassador appointments for this year from business association experts and past winners. SOBA Awards 2025 will be presented in 18 categories, in two separate tiers: one for below RM25mil, and another for RM25mil and above. Also included is the Mikro SOBA Mikro Recognition Awards, which recognises local micro brands or businesses with annual turnover of less than RM300,000. SOBA 2025 is organised by SMG with CGC, PKT Logistics, RHB Bank and U Mobile as main sponsors, and Matrade as the official trade promotion partner. It is audited by BDO while radio stations 988 and Suria are official media partners. For details, call the SOBA hotline at 017-231 1789 or visit
