Glasgow artist's mission to send Billy Connolly mural copy

Glasgow Times22-06-2025
Not in the flesh, but on the boards on which the artist, Conzo Throb, painted the mural of the legendary comedian in the city centre earlier this year.
The boards have been reunited with him, and he plans to give them a new home, he's also set himself the mission of getting a copy of the artwork to The Big Yin.
Conzo put together a heartfelt personal package with a handwritten letter and a copy of the artwork and has sent it to Billy in safe hands.

He spoke to us about the inspiration behind the mural, which he says has "changed his life."
Conzo, 37, explained: "It was two funny men that started this fire in me to make this. Billy Connolly, obviously, and the late great John Byrne.
"I've had this idea for years of painting Billy Connolly naked specifically, because I was dared to by my flatmate and friend, Panda, to paint a mural next to a big Billy Connolly mural that already exists, and it didn't feel right at the time.
"A great wall appeared outside where Dishoom is going to be on Nelson Mandela Square, and it triggered the idea that the time was right to paint this mural of Billy's bare a**e huge on a big 18ft by 16ft canvas."

He goes on to credit Billy's book, Windswept and Interesting, for helping him get through a "really tough time" in the past few years, and how learning about the comic's life let him "give himself the permission slip" to follow his dreams.
Conzo also took ideas for the mural from the book, he said: "In Billy's book, in the very first chapter, he talks about his love of being naked, the absolute freedom of it, and I figured that's just a beautiful thing to have painted.
"A very funny one as well, and to paint it without permission makes it even funnier, and to get away with it and even have people tell you that they loved it and cheered them up was an unexpected but definitely pleasant surprise."
Conzo had help from friends and fellow artists Ciaran Globel and Panda, with whom he recently opened their art gallery, Grateful Gallery, in Garnethill.
He took some inspiration after the idea had formed from John Byrne's 2002 painting of Billy that hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
Conzo said: "In the very left corner was a very small painting of Billy streaking naked, and I just thought it was hilarious because I had a core childhood memory of Billy being naked on the TV, and so do a lot of people."
John Byrne was born in Paisley and studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1958 to 1963. He worked as an artist, playwright and theatre designer.

Conzo made 50 screenprints of the mural, with the very first one being put in the package that's been sent to Billy.
Speaking about the special package he's sent to Billy, Conzo said: "When he opens the tube, he'll get this beautiful big newspaper with the front page of his bum that made it the next day.
"So, hopefully it's going to bring him a big laugh. That's what I'm hoping for.
"First thing, he's sipping his morning tea, and then he just gets this beautiful package of just a good self-portrait of him being naked and just gets a big laugh.
"That's the ultimate goal."

Conzo continued: "And yeah, I wrote him a nice little personal letter just appreciation and telling him why I did this as well as about how he and his best pal John Burn totally inspired me and helped change my life route completely over the past three years."
"He's helped many people, but it really helped me just give myself a permission slip to chase this whole dream of being an artist and not feeling bad about it or having to ask others if I'm allowed to do certain things.
"So, it's just a big ode to these legends. It's like a two-in-one. It really is."

Now that he's been reunited with them, Conzo hopes to have the boards displayed in public again or auctioned off for charity.
The People's Palace is his ultimate goal, for the work to be displayed in the same place as Billy's big banana boots.
Conzo's favourite part of the mural is the nipple ring, he explained: "In his book Windswept and Interesting, he talks about how he got his nipples pierced just for fun.
"And when he did a movie, he had to take them out for a swimming scene. And throughout this movie, filming in the ocean, his wounds healed up, so he could no longer have his nipples pierced.
"I just love that story. It's just funny, it's a nice little detail, it's the tiniest part of the whole mural, and it's a little sparkling, beautiful thing."

Married At First Sight's Awhina breaks silence on Billy romance after pair went ‘Instagram official'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MARRIED At First Sight's Awhina has broken her silence on fellow show co-star Billy Belcher and their relationship since departing the programme. Awhina Rutene and Billy Belcher have been hit with rampant romance rumours after they went 'Instagram official' with one another after their series of MAFS Australia came to an end earlier this year. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 5 Awhina has spoken exclusively to The Sun about her bond with Billy Credit: Instagram 5 The pair have been very close since November Credit: Instagram 5 They have been on holiday together and spent time with one another's families Credit: Instagram Just last month, the fan-favourite pair seemingly went official after teasing their new relationship on social media. Paired up with Adrian Araouzou on the hit Channel 9 and E4 series, things were not rosy for Awhina with it ending on bad terms by the end of the experiment. Meanwhile, Billy was coupled with Sierah Swepstone before she and Adrian revealed they had a connection. After leaving the show, Awhina and Billy got close, with their "romance" leaving fans stunned last month. But despite reports saying that the pair are together after they went Instagram official, The Sun can reveal this is not the case. Speaking exclusively to The Sun about her relationship with Billy, Awhina got candid and opened up about their bond. "Billy and I are really close, like, I've done so many podcasts on our relationship. We are extremely close, like, I'm seeing him on Thursday," she told us in our chat this week. She added: "We speak a lot over the phone he calls me. I've gone to the movies with his mum. "I've hung out with his sister multiple times, hung out with his brother. "He's hung out with my family a lot. We've been very close since November last year. MAFS groom slammed over 'misogynistic' post as he shares 'high standards' for future girlfriend after bitter show split "But the thing with our relationship is sometimes it can get confusing, because the world's heavily involved," she explained. She later added: "I think that you can still have a beautiful relationship without being romantic and without ruining anything." Awhina noted that their "friendship line can be a bit blurred" but affirmed that she loves him. Opening up about why their relationship likely won't progress into anything romantic, she said that their life's trajectories look quite different. "I generally hope Billy gets everything he wants out of life... but the next 5 years look very different, like what I want versus what he wants. "So it's kind of like... as much of those lines can be blurry... If we were to cross that line we'd probably lose our friendship down in like a year or two." She then explained how she is keen to start dating again and expand her family even more. "I truly want to get back into a relationship because I was in one for so long. Like 14 years," she told us. "I like being a partner to someone, and I still want to grow my family like I'm not one and done. I want at least 3 kids. "So my next 5 years looks like, when I'm ready to get back out there and start dating, grow my family, and probably go offline." 5 Awhina was paired with Adrian on the hit show Credit: E4

Shaughna Phillips reveals unborn baby's gender in first video with jailbird boyfriend

Love Island star, Shaughna Phillips, is expecting her second baby with boyfriend, Billy Webb, who was jailed in 2023 for Class A drug offences Love Island's Shaughna Phillips has revealed the gender of her unborn baby in a new video with boyfriend, Billy Webb. ‌ Shaughna, 31, who shares daughter, Lucia, two, with Webb, revealed the couple were expecting again in June after her boyfriend was allowed a brief home visit while serving a nine-year sentence for Class A drug offences. ‌ The Love Island star never reveals her partner's identity on Instagram and made sure to block out his face as she shared her latest video, filmed in her back garden. Snuggled together with little Lucia alongside them, the couple revealed they were having another girl as their daughter excitedly opened a box to reveal a pink cuddly bunny and a fluffy pink pram suit. ‌ Responding to the adorable clip, Shaughna's famous pals sent their well wishes. Former TOWIE star, Billie Shepherd replied: "Congratulations darling" as Gogglebox's Ellie Warner also congratulated the reality star. Speaking to the Mirror about trying for her second child, Shaughna admitted she planned the pregnancy, even tracking her ovulation to boost her chances of conceiving. ‌ However, she says she was stunned that her baby dream came true so quickly. 'It was the first time that my ovulation window coincided with Billy being home,' the mum-of-one told us. 'I was like, 'You know what? Why not? Let's just see'. And literally, the next day, I said to Billy, 'I think I'm pregnant.'' ‌ Shaughna's gut feeling was confirmed ten days later, when multiple pregnancy tests showed up positive. 'I found out very, very early on,' she exclusively told us. 'I was doing maybe five tests a day. I'm not even exaggerating.' Shaughna said Billy, who was jailed in 2023, is currently allowed out on home visits for 'a few days' each month. And while she has so far been forced to raise her daughter as a single parent, the star says her partner is due for early release and should be reunited with his family in time for their new arrival. 'I know the date that he's due to be home, but I'm not saying it just because anything could happen,' she says carefully. 'But hopefully he will be fully home before my baby is due.' ‌ After missing out on being a hands-on dad first time around, Shaughna is looking forward to having Billy there when the new baby arrives. 'He definitely wanted another one. He didn't get that newborn experience [with Lucia] and I think that's what he wanted,' she shared, joking that she wants Billy to 'experience the newborn stage and everything it has to offer, because he does not know what is coming his way.'

Billy Joel reveals exactly what Sir Elton John said that sparked 'bad blood' fallout

Piano Man star Billy Joel has admitted he was 'really hurt' by a comment from Sir Elton John after the pair toured together as he revealed there was 'bad blood' Billy Joel has revealed he was left "really hurt" by comments from Sir Elton John, despite their once friendly relationship. The Piano Man, 76, once toured with Sir Elton but things turned sour. ‌ A rift came between Billy and the Rocketman hitmaker, 78, that took years to heal. Billy has now revealed he was hurt by Elton's comments in his new documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes. ‌ The pair headed out on their Face to Face tour in 1994 but they suffered a number of cancelled shows. Sir Elton decided to address the reason for the shows not taking place, with Billy feeling he went a step too far. ‌ "Elton had made a comment that he thought I needed real rehab," Billy said in the documentary. "He chalked it up to, 'Oh, he's a drunk.' And that really hurt me." At the time, Sir Elton told the Rolling Stone: "He's going to hate me for this, but every time he goes to rehab they've been light." He said he had given Billy some "tough love". ‌ Billy had been struggling with alcoholism and once admitted it destroyed his 10 year marriage to Christine Brinkley. The couple officially divorce around the same time as the Face to Face tour. Speaking of the fallout with Sir Elton, Billy shared: "I said 'wait a minute? Don't you know me better than that?' And there was bad blood for a little while. There was a dovetailing of things that happened during that time." He revealed he felt "clobbered" after the comments and hit rock bottom. His relationship with Sir Elton also suffered as a result. ‌ "I was disillusioned with what I thought it was all supposed to mean," Billy said. "It was like all the signs were pointing to me: Enough. And I wrote this letter to the band. 'I don't want to do this anymore. I'm gonna stop'." In 2005, Billy went to rehab at the Betty Ford Clinic after his wife Katie Lee insisted. They split up four years later but Billy decided to resume the Face to Face tour. Billy performed throughout the 00s, with a stint in 2009 before wrapping again in 2010. He managed to patch things up with Sir Elton while on stage at the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013. ‌ While on stage Sir Elton reached out to Billy as he said: "Mr. Joel, I haven't seen you tonight, but I love you dearly." When Billy took the stage he decided to do the same as he said: "Is Elton still here? By the way, we're ok. Call me, it's the same phone number." Billy recently confirmed he has now given up alcohol as he blamed his addiction for his normal pressure hydrocephalus diagnosis. According to the NHS, NPH is an uncommon and poorly understood condition that most often affects people over the age of 60. It can sometimes develop after an injury or a stroke, but in most cases the cause is unknown. The main symptoms are mobility problems, dementia and urinary incontinence. Billy was forced to cancel all his scheduled shows earlier this month due to the condition. He has been suffering with hearing, vision and balance problems following a number of previous performances.
