OMU wins safety award

Owensboro Municipal Utilities was recently awarded the American Public Power Association's top safety award, which recognized the utility for its worker safety record and safety policies.
Thursday afternoon, OMU General Manager Tim Lyons told city utility commissioners the agency had received a Diamond Award in the APPA's 2024 Safety Award for Excellence for utilities that worked 110,00 to 249,999 work hours last year. The Diamond Award is the highest safety award the APPA presents to utilities.
According to the APPA website, the annual safety awards, 'recognize utilities' incident rates and the overall state of their safety programs and culture.'
In a press release, APPA safety committee chairman Jon Beasley said, 'Harnessing electricity to keep our communities powered is vital work that can be dangerous, even deadly, if the proper attention isn't paid to tried-and-true safety practices.
'This award honors utilities that hold fast to these practices and, in doing so, put the safety of their personnel and their customers above all else.'
Utilities are ranked based on the number of incident-free records during the year.
This year was the first year OMU entered the APPA contest.
'This reflects all OMU employees' in the power and water utilities, said Brad Howton, OMU's director of customer and shared services.
The water utility hasn't had a workplace accident in more than four consecutive years, Howton said.
Sonya Dixon, OMU's public relations and communications manager, said of the agency: 'We have a very conscientious workforce' when it comes to workplace safety.
OMU has a safety team that coordinates policy, and workers are involved with crafting the policy, Dixon said.
'It's obviously policy driven and culture driven ... all the way down to the daily (safety) discussions,' Dixon said.
The award 'is from an electric entity, but certainly it's an honor we accept company-wide,' Dixon said.
In a written statement, Lyons said, 'This award is a testament to the safety culture we have built, and the hard work that goes into ensuring that our team members have a safe work environment.'

Chamber ambassadors coming back to Massena

May 29—MASSENA — The chamber ambassadors are coming back in Massena. Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce ambassadors once donned red coats and were present to welcome businesses or dignitaries to the community, and take part in grand openings, open houses and groundbreaking ceremonies. Now, the group is being resurrected. Massena Town Supervisor Susan J. Bellor told town board members that a meeting for those interested in becoming chamber ambassadors had been held on May 14 to discuss "community engagement, advertising, and celebrations locally." St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Benjamin R. Dixon said the group was starting to form. "Sue did mention that we are now having monthly meetings of the Massena ambassadors, which is kind of our boots on the ground volunteers and interested parties," he said. "I feel like we're getting a lot of traction there with them, and that I think is a big turning point for us in Massena, to have that group of engaged citizens working with us. It's a great group of people." Dixon also highlighted some of the chamber's upcoming activities for the town board. They include the annual tourism dinner Wednesday at the Freighthouse Restaurant in Ogdensburg, He said the Seaway Visitor Center at Eisenhower Lock will receive the Tourism Destination Marketing Award. "They've been a great partner this year, and they brought in 37,000 visitors since they started from all 50 state and more than 30 countries. So, it's really been quite the asset for Massena and the county, and we're excited to recognize them," he said. "We'll also be giving our Best to the Guest Award to the Best Western University Inn." Other upcoming events include the Dairy Festival June 6 and 7 in downtown Canton, Car-B-Que June 21 at Fort La Presentation in Ogdensburg, Business After Hours networking event from 5 to 7 p.m. June 24 at JJ's on the River in Ogdensburg, Massena Community-Wide Garage Sales on June 28 and 29, Canton Community-Wide Garage Sales on Aug. 2 and 3, and Craft, Food and Wine Open Air Market Sept. 20 at the St. Lawrence Power and Equipment in Madrid. He said the garage sales will include an online map on the chamber's event page to indicate where the sales are being held. Also on the schedule are a nonprofit conference Sept. 17 at the Best Western University Inn in Canton, annual dinner Oct. 22 at the GranView in Ogdensburg, and Craft, Food and Wine Holiday Market at a date and location to be announced. The 2026 calendar includes Canton Winterfest, the North Country Kids Expo, the annual membership breakfast meeting, and Massena Spring Fever Festival. Dixon said the ambassadors have been discussing ideas for the Spring Fever Festival. "Chamber events, while just one element of our extensive programming, provide multiple benefits to our members, businesses, non-profit, service organizations, and communities of St. Lawrence County," he said. "Through them, we provide networking, exposure, education, commerce, tourism attraction, and quality of life opportunities."

Why tourism in Topeka is down

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka Lodging Association is sounding the alarm on tourism in the capital city. They say a big part of that is due to Hotel Topeka and the closure of Heartland Park Racetrack. Topeka's tourism taxes is $50,000 off track for 2025, 15% less than expected. They say most of the shortfall comes from Hotel Topeka, which the city purchased next to the Stormont Vail Event Center. 'Yes, Hotel Topeka does play into this as it's been difficult to sell for group in particular,' Visit Topeka President Sean Dixon said. 'But we had some severe weather issues that withheld some of the stuff that was on the books already.' This isn't the first time there's been a downward trend in transient guest tax in Topeka. A good example Dixon gives is COVID – when the city fell $600,000 short in taxes. Although, local economic leaders say not to worry. While tourism points down at the moment, good things are coming to Topeka soon. 'We don't anticipate a significant reduction again for the first quarter of '26. We actually have a lot of great booked business in at that point,' Dixon said. Visit Topeka says sports, specifically, is going to do great for Topeka. Some of those events will include a major cheer and dance championship, and the Kansas Kids Wrestling Tournament, which brings thousands of people to the Capital City.
