Dubai student who helped place e-waste bins at some malls becomes 'recycling hero 2025'
A Dubai student and an environmental advocate has been recognised as the 'Recycling Hero 2025' by the Global Recycling Foundation, becoming the only recipient of the prestigious title from the Middle East this year.
Rishabh Mittal is the founder of Going Green Dubai, a youth-led non-profit initiative that champions sustainable practices through impactful community recycling efforts.
Since its inception, the initiative has successfully recycled 5,645 kilograms of electronic waste, 17,557 plastic bottles, and 1,323 kilograms of paper waste — setting a benchmark for grassroots environmental action in the region.
'Making a difference'
Speaking about what inspired his journey, Mittal said, ' It started when I realised that recycling is something people want to do — but accessibility, especially for e-waste, is a major barrier. Old phones, chargers, cables — these are things most people have lying around, and as a tech enthusiast, I saw an opportunity to make a difference.'
His collaboration with Enviroserve, a Dubai-based recycling facility, proved instrumental. The organisation specialises in securely recycling everything from personal devices like phones and laptops to large appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines.
Mittal was impressed by their end-to-end process, which includes safe data erasure and responsible material recovery.
The Year 12 student of Dubai International Academy (DIA) Emirates Hills, said, 'Visiting Enviroserve gave me a clear understanding of the professionalism and reliability of their operations. It built my confidence to advocate for them within the community.'
'I launched my first e-waste recycling initiative in my own neighborhood in Business Bay — a 14-day campaign where we collected 210 kilograms of waste. This effort later expanded to my school and eventually to the wider Innoventures Education network. In one of our larger campaigns, we managed to collect 1,000 kilograms of e-waste,' added the Indian expat, who aspires to study Environmental Engineering at university.
Initiatives at Emaar malls
Mittal also used this platform to engage youth, schools, companies, communities and Emaar malls at The Springs Souk, Meadows Village and Meadows Town Centre to take action towards reducing the environmental footprint with e-waste recycling bins placed at each of the malls.
The Recycling Heroes Competition, hosted by the UK-based Global Recycling Foundation, sought to recognise individuals and organisations who have made significant strides in recycling and sustainability.
Participants from around the world were invited to submit a 60-90 seconds video to showcase their impactful initiatives.
'Rishabh has demonstrated his dedication to sustainability since Year 9 by running multiple campaigns in school. His e-waste recycling campaigns have gained widespread support from the community which also contributed to our school being named as a top three finalist for the World's Best School Prizes 2024 in the Environmental Action category,' said Hitesh Bhagat, Principal of DIA Emirates Hills.

India Charts New Course on Crypto, Tightens Tax Norms, and Eyes AI for Compliance
India is poised to release a comprehensive discussion paper on cryptocurrency regulation in June 2025, marking a significant shift in its approach to digital assets. This initiative aims to establish a clear policy framework, drawing from international standards set by the International Monetary Fund and the Financial Stability Board . The move comes amid growing global acceptance of cryptocurrencies and domestic pressures, including a nudge from the Supreme Court, to clarify India's stance on digital assets. Currently, India's cryptocurrency landscape is characterized by a 30% tax on gains and a 1% transaction levy, without formal recognition of crypto assets. These stringent tax measures have led to over 90% of Indian crypto trading shifting offshore, as reported by industry sources. The forthcoming discussion paper is expected to address these issues and invite public feedback, potentially paving the way for a more structured and innovation-friendly crypto ecosystem in the country. Despite the government's move towards regulation, the Reserve Bank of India maintains a cautious stance on cryptocurrencies. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra reiterated concerns about the potential risks to financial stability and monetary policy, emphasizing that there has been no change in the central bank's position. The RBI continues to promote its own digital currency, the e₹, as a safer alternative to private digital assets. ADVERTISEMENT In parallel with developments in the crypto sector, the Indian government has introduced stricter requirements for claiming tax deductions in the assessment year 2025-26. Taxpayers are now mandated to provide detailed documentation when filing their Income Tax Returns , particularly under the old income tax regime. For instance, claiming House Rent Allowance now necessitates disclosing the place of work, actual HRA received, rent paid, and landlord information. Similarly, deductions under sections 80C and 80D require specific policy or receipt numbers and details of the insurance providers. These measures aim to reduce fraudulent claims by enabling the tax department to cross-verify the eligibility of deductions. To assist taxpayers in navigating these complex requirements, AI-driven platforms like TaxBuddy have emerged as valuable tools. TaxBuddy simplifies the tax filing process by offering automation that pre-fills ITR forms using data from PAN, Aadhaar, and uploaded documents. The platform reduces manual data entry and minimizes errors, making the process faster and more efficient. Additionally, TaxBuddy provides expert assistance for complex tax situations, post-filing support for notices or audits, and secure data handling for peace of mind. Meanwhile, affluent individuals are increasingly leveraging agricultural income exemptions to reduce their tax liabilities. Under the Income Tax Bill 2025, while genuine agricultural income remains tax-free, the government has introduced stricter documentation requirements to verify farming activities. This move aims to curb the misuse of agricultural income exemptions by wealthy individuals who invest in farmlands primarily for tax benefits. Tax experts have highlighted cases where individuals with substantial agricultural revenues have legally avoided significant tax payments, underscoring the need for more transparent and equitable tax policies.

Meet Dubai student who launched AI website to help unprivileged with college applications
A Year 13 student from a Dubai school has created an AI-powered platform designed to support underprivileged students through the complex and often daunting college application process. This new student-led innovation is aiming to bridge educational inequality using cutting-edge technology. Garv Lamba, who was recently accepted into the University of California, San Diego to study artificial intelligence, came up with the idea after his own challenges during the university application process. Although he had access to school counsellors and professional consultants, Garv realised that many students worldwide lack this support. Reflecting on his own experience, Garv shared, 'I felt a bit lost last year while going through the college applications. You need to research each college you are applying for, you need to gather data and improve your portfolio." Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. As a student at Gems Wellington Academy Al Khail, he had the advantage of guidance from school counsellors and an educational consultancy called UniHawk. However, Garv quickly realised that not every student has this privilege. From this realisation, Garv and his team developed a website that acts as a 'digital counsellor,' powered by AI and natural language models. The platform mimics the role of a real-life college advisor, asking students about their academic interests, personal background, and career goals. Based on this input, it generates a personalised portfolio and identifies areas where students can improve, whether through additional information or extracurricular activities. 'It gives you advise on what to do next and builds your portfolio in the background. So, it will put a spreadsheet of your interest and from that portfolio give the individual personalised guidance,' Garv explained. 'They look at you as an individual and identifies your strengths and weaknesses…that is something that AI can do pretty well which is why [we] utilise that idea.' One key feature of this platform is its ability to suggest extracurricular activities that align with a student's strengths and longterm goals, helping them stand out to competitive universities. Additionally, it offers feedback on college essays — especially helpful for applicants targeting Ivy League or other top-tier institutions. Garv also emphasised that the website offers constructive comments to guide improvements. 'It's definitely an aid to educational counsellors but the main focus is on students who don't have access to such resources. It's not a complete replacement but it's a good alternative for those who need it," said the 18-year-old. The platform was developed over the course of a year in collaboration with fellow students Ian Pannetier and Mahmoud Moursy. Among the app's innovative features is an 'Interviewer' tool that simulates college interview scenarios, and sections focused on identifying and addressing gaps in a student's academic or extracurricular profile. Currently, the upcoming app operates as a website that offers tailored advice on essays and goal-setting. However, the team envisions a much broader platform in the future. 'We want to create an entire database with college information,' Garv said, adding that this will be in addition to tools for portfolio development. Despite being in its early stages, the initiative has already received positive feedback. 'We've got good reviews from users in India, the United States, and other regions -- a testament to the global demand for accessible college guidance,' he added.
