
Pan-African Congress urges support for missionaries facing visa, racism challenges

Delegates of the third Pan-African Catholic Congress on Theology, Society, and Pastoral Life who gathered in Ivory Coast's city of Abidjan from August 5–10 have called for the support of African missionaries who are experiencing hardships in their missions, especially those set back by immigration challenges.
In a statement at the end of the congress, the delegates said divisions such as ethnicity and racism must not stand in the way of missionary discipleship in Africa and even outside the continent.
Noting that self-reliance is an imperative for the Church in Africa, 'not as isolation from other local churches but as mature participation in the universal communion of faith,' the delegates said: 'This means … supporting African missionaries in the challenging mission in some parts of the world where some African missionaries experience racism and immigration restrictions.'
The delegates acknowledged that the African Church has transitioned to becoming a 'Church of the Sheaves,' sharing personnel within the continent, even outside Africa.
'We recognize with gratitude how far the African Church has journeyed: transiting from a mission Church receiving the Gospel to a Church of the Sheaves, sharing gifts and sending missionaries to other parts of the world,' they said, adding: 'We commit ourselves to deepening this transformation as missionary disciples of the Lord to Africa and the world.'
They said that synodality, as explored in the Synod on Synodality, is the pathway of the mission of evangelization and called for 'overcoming divisions based on ethnicity, status, or ideology.'
The call by the congress delegates comes amid mounting frustrations of foreign Catholic priests who have been forced out of South Africa on alleged expiry of their visas.
In some of the most recent incidences, two Ugandan-born priests were forced to abandon their ministry in the country after reportedly being frustrated in their visa renewal processes.
Father Stephen Syambi served in South Africa's Diocese of Klerksdorp before he was forced out on July 16, and Father Jude Thaddeus served in the Diocese of De Aar before he was sent packing in May.
The president of the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference (SACBC), Cardinal Stephen Brislin, has expressed his spiritual closeness with foreign Church ministers who have been forced out of South Africa, telling them not to lose hope but to 'try and resolve this matter.'
Organized by the Pan-African Catholic Theology and Pastoral Network (PACTPAN), the five-day congress in Abidjan brought together theologians, bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated women and men, lay leaders, youth, and Catholic communicators who engaged with the theme 'Journeying Together in Hope as Church, Family of God in Africa.'
Conference participants explored Africa's contribution to the global Church's understanding of the Synod on Synodality, advancement of African theological scholarship, and the place of women and youths in the Church in Africa.
Participants also discussed urgent issues affecting African communities, including human trafficking, religious persecution, and environmental degradation. They emphasized the urgent need for the African Church to become more self-reliant by generating and managing resources in a transparent manner.
The delegates also underscored the need to support clergy, religious, and pastoral workers materially and spiritually.
Also important, they said, is the need to invest in theological formation, research, and Catholic education at all levels and to build sustainable institutions of evangelization, health care, and social service.
The delegates further suggested that an African-led missionary fund be developed in Africa to support the work of African missionaries to the rest of the world.
In their statement, the delegates also described Africa as 'a gift to the world,' saying: 'Africa is rich in faith, culture, and values.'
'The African family remains the domestic Church and the moral bedrock of society, preserving traditions of solidarity, hospitality, and mutual care. We affirm the irreplaceable role of women, youth, and elders as bearers of these values and as agents of renewal in the Church and society,' they said.
Central to their deliberations was the theme of hope that Pope Leo XIV explored at length his message of solidarity with the participants of the congress.
The participants presented hope as not simply an idea, a sentiment, or an aspiration. 'Hope is a person — Jesus Christ, crucified and risen,' they said in their final statement. 'He is the unshakable anchor for our faith, the sure foundation for our dreams, and the wellspring of courage for our mission.'
'Hope, grounded in Christ, enables us to … stand firm amid wars, political instability, and violence that afflict many African nations, resist despair in the face of poverty, corruption, and social breakdown, and care for our common home even as climate change threatens ecosystems, livelihoods, and future generations,' they added.
Hope, they said, helps the people of God in Africa to heal the wounds of displacement, forced migration, and the loss of human dignity on the continent and to create new structures of love and programmes of reconciliation.'
'Our hope is not naïve optimism,' they said, adding that hope, for Africans, 'is a theological virtue rooted in the Resurrection — trusting that God is always creating and re-creating, raising life from ashes, and bringing light out of darkness.'--CNA

Pope Leo's ‘calming' start
WHEN Pope Leo XIV surprised tens of thousands of young people at a recent Holy Year celebration with an impromptu popemobile romp around St Peter's Square, it almost seemed as if some of the informal spontaneity that characterised Pope Francis' 12-year papacy had returned to the Vatican. But the message Leo delivered that night was all his own. In seamless English, Spanish and Italian, Leo told the young people that they were the 'salt of the Earth, the light of the world'. He urged them to spread their hope, faith in Christ and cries of peace wherever they go. As Robert Prevost marked his 100th day as Pope Leo at Vatican City yesterday, the contours of his pontificate have begun to come into relief, primarily where he shows continuity with Francis and where he signals change. Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that after 12 sometimes turbulent years under Francis, a certain calm and reserve have returned to the papacy. That seems exactly what many Catholic faithful want, and may respond to what today's church needs. 'He's been very direct and forthright, but he's not doing spontaneous press hits,' said Kevin Hughes, chair of theology and religious studies at Leo's alma mater, Villanova University. Leo has a different style compared to Francis, and that has brought relief to many, Hughes said in a telephone interview. 'Even those who really loved Pope Francis always kind of held their breath a little bit; you didn't know what was going to come out next or what he was going to do,' he added. Leo has certainly gone out of his way in his first 100 days to try to heal divisions that deepened during Francis' pontificate, offering messages of unity and avoiding controversy at almost every turn. Even his signature issue – confronting the promise and peril posed by artificial intelligence – is something that conservatives and progressives alike agree is important. Francis' emphasis on caring for the environment and migrants often alienated conservatives. Leo, though, has cemented Francis' environmental legacy by celebrating the first-ever ecologically-inspired Mass. He has furthered that legacy by giving the go-ahead for the Vatican to turn a 430ha field north of Rome into a vast solar farm that should generate enough electricity to meet Vatican City's needs and turn it into the world's first carbon-neutral state. But he hasn't granted any sit-down, tell-all interviews or made headline-grabbing, off-the-cuff comments like his predecessor did. He hasn't made any major appointments, including to fill his old job, or taken any big trips. In marking the 80th anniversary of the US atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki last week, he had a chance to match Francis' novel declaration that the mere possession of nuclear weapons was 'immoral'. But he didn't. Compared to President Donald Trump, the other American world leader who took office in 2025 with a flurry of Sharpie-penned executive decrees, Leo has eased into his new job slowly, deliberately and quietly, almost trying not to draw attention to himself. At 69, he seems to know that he has time on his side, and that after Francis' revolutionary papacy, the church might need a bit of a breather. One Vatican official who knows Leo said he expects his papacy will have the effect of a 'calming rain' on the church. But Leo is also very much a product of the Francis papacy. Francis named Prevost bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, in 2014 and then moved him to head one of the most important Vatican jobs in 2023 – vetting bishop nominations. In retrospect, it seems as if Francis had had his eye on Prevost as a possible successor. Given Francis' stump speech before the 2013 conclave that elected him pope, the then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio essentially described Prevost in identifying the church's mission today. He said the church was 'called to go outside of itself and go to the peripheries, not just geographic but also the existential peripheries'. Prevost, who hails from Chicago, spent his adult life as a missionary in Peru, eventually becoming bishop of Chiclayo. Parolin in Burundi: For the common good, so everyone may live with dignity
In Burundi, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary coincided with the elevation of the Parish of Saint Anthony of Padua —located within the territory of the national Marian shrine of Mugera, part of the Archdiocese of Gitega—to the status of Minor Basilica. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin presided over a Mass to celebrate the feast day. He was joined by the bishops of the country, the Apostolic Nuncio to Burundi and his diplomatic collaborator, hundreds of priests, religious men and women, and thousands of faithful. The President of the Republic, Évariste Ndayishimiye, was also in attendance. A dedication to Mary People go to pray for the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes at the Shrine of Mugera, which commemorates Burundi's consecration to the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, on August 15, 1961. Many prayers have been answered through Mary's intercession at the shrine and thousands of pilgrims visit each year. In the shrine, the small grotto is made of African stones—intended to emulate the Grotto of Lourdes. Pilgrims travel to Mugera in search of hope and to pray to their heavenly Mother for peace in human hearts and to enlighten the minds of leaders to select paths of peace to end violence in the world. People continue to make pilgrimages to this shrine, praying that the long-desired peace will be achieved. The continuous annual pilgrimage highlights that the consecration 56 years ago is an expression of the growing faith of the Church in Burundi. A man for all of Burundi For this reason, Cardinal Parolin used his homily during the Mass on 15 August to strongly renew his appeal to overcome personal interests, so that people around the world may focus on serving the common good. Only then can those living in war zones, who continue to suffer and endure deprivation, once again begin to hope for life marked by dignity and safety. The day before, on 14 August, the Secretary of State visited Minago to bless a monument marking the place where, on December 29, 2003, Archbishop Michael Courtney, an Irish priest and Apostolic Nuncio to Burundi, was killed in an ambush on his way home. Cardinal Parolin recounted how the archbishop had walked alongside the people of Burundi during challenging years, working tirelessly for reconciliation and peace. Archbishop Courtney had dedicated himself to communicating a vision of achievable peace and being close to everyone—no matter the danger or threat to his life. Just a few days after his murder, Pope John Paul II proclaimed these words in remembrance of the archbishop: "Archbishop Michael Aidan Courtney, my representative as Apostolic Nuncio to Burundi, was also a witness to this 'Gospel of peace.' He was tragically killed just a few days ago while carrying out his mission of dialogue and reconciliation. Let us pray for him, hoping that his example and his sacrifice may bear fruits of peace in Burundi and throughout the world."
