‘Peace is the only option available'

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for peace and urged Thailand and Cambodia to de-escalate tensions following deadly clashes at their border that resulted in multiple casualties.
As the current Asean Chair, he said Malaysia had conveyed its concerns to both nations and that he was scheduled to speak with the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia yesterday.
'These two countries are members of Asean and are also close to Malaysia. The least we can expect is for them to stand down and hopefully enter negotiations.
'Peace is the only option available,' Anwar said after attending the Asean Semiconductor Summit 2025.
The conflict flared up on Wednesday, with both nations accusing each other of initiating hostilities.
Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Cambodian military had attacked both civilian and military targets, including a hospital.
Cambodia, meanwhile, accused Thai jets of bombing a road near the Preah Vihear temple and defended its actions as a response to 'armed aggression'.
Tensions escalated after a landmine blast on Wednesday wounded five Thai soldiers, prompting both countries to downgrade diplomatic ties.
Cambodia expelled the Thai ambassador, while Thailand had earlier done the same.
Border disputes between the two countries have erupted periodically, with some of the most violent clashes occurring near historic temples like Preah Vihear.
In 1962, the International Court of Justice recognised Cambodia's sovereignty over the Preah Vihear temple area. Cambodia returned to the court in 2011, which led to a 2013 ruling reaffirming the decision, a continuing source of resentment in Thailand.
Thailand's Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is currently acting Prime Minister following the suspension of Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
Cambodia is led by Prime Minister Hun Manet, who said that his country has always maintained a position of resolving problems peacefully.
Asked whether Asean might mediate, Anwar said the bloc is focused on direct engagement with both governments.
'It's premature to suggest that trade will be affected, as both countries appear interested in resolving this amicably. Both nations also want to keep Asean engaged in the matter.'

Rubio says US officials in Malaysia to help in Cambodia-Thailand talks

WASHINGTON: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ( pic ) said State Department officials are in Malaysia to assist peace efforts as Cambodia and Thailand were scheduled to begin talks there on Monday in hopes for a ceasefire. President Donald Trump and Rubio were engaged with their counterparts for each country and were monitoring the situation very closely, Rubio said in a statement released by the State Department late on Sunday in the U.S. and early Monday (July 28) in Asia. "We want this conflict to end as soon as possible," he said. "State Department officials are on the ground in Malaysia to assist these peace efforts." The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia were scheduled to attend mediation talks over their deadly border conflict in Malaysia on Monday, the Thai government said, as both sides accused each other of launching fresh artillery strikes across contested areas. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have intensified since the late-May killing of a Cambodian soldier during a brief border skirmish. Border troops on both sides were reinforced amid a full-blown diplomatic crisis that brought Thailand's fragile coalition government to the brink of collapse. Hostilities resumed on Thursday and, within just four days, escalated into the worst fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbors in more than a decade. The death toll has risen above 30, including 13 civilians in Thailand and eight in Cambodia, while authorities report that more than 200,000 people have been evacuated from border areas. Trump said on Sunday he believed both Thailand and Cambodia wanted to settle their differences after he told the leaders of both countries that he would not conclude trade deals with them unless they ended their fighting. - Reuters (Reporting by Kanishka Singh in Washington; Editing by Tom Hogue and Stephen Coates)

Thai-Cambodian dispute: A complex, ancient history

COMMENT | As chair of Asean 2025, Malaysians should make some effort to know something of the history and politics of the 10 member states that make up this association founded on Aug 8, 1967. Asean represents 700 million people, almost all of whom have suffered much under centuries of colonial rule. And well before colonial rule, the people of Asean have also had a long history of internecine warfare for territory and resources. This has continued into the modern era, often fanned by a heady mix of nationalism and populism. The Philippines' claim to Sabah is a case in point, and so are Pulau Batu Puteh...

Madani framework remains grounded in strong moral values, national unity, says Anwar

PUTRAJAYA, July 28 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring that Malaysia's development under the Madani framework remains grounded in strong moral values and national unity. Speaking at a 'Majlis Ilmu Madani' event with Islamic scholars at Kompleks Seri Perdana here yesterday, Anwar said that even though Malaysia is a multiracial country, the values of Islam are important in guiding its future. He added that while Malaysia wants to keep up with modern technology and move forward quickly, it should always stay true to strong morals and compassion. 'We need to progress. We need to ensure that there is peace and political stability, to craft an economic move forward at a faster pace, an accelerated pace. But at the same time, we are mindful of the fact that as Muslims, the issue of values is very pertinent,' he said. Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. Yusuf Islam, the British musician formerly known as Cat Stevens and Dr Shaykha Haifaa Younis, an American Board Certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist who is also a prominent Islamic scholar, were also present. On Gaza, Anwar said the world must not forget the pain and suffering endured by the Palestinian people amid the ongoing war in Gaza. Meanwhile, Haifaa also shared her Gaza journey where the place transformed her into a more spiritual person and left an unshakable imprint on her heart. 'The ummah (the Muslim community) is going through a tough time. Gaza is bleeding. It hurts deeply when I raise my hands to Allah, I know everyone is doing their best, but still I ask, what more can we do. 'They (people in Gaza) taught me patience. They taught me how to trust Allah, even when the world around you is falling apart. I saw people who did not know when the next bomb would fall but they still prayed,' she added. Meanwhile, Quran expert Syeikh Dr Ahmad Aissa Hassan El-Ma'sarawi said the Madani knowledge gatherings held by Anwar every month should continue because it is similar to the practice of leaders during the time of the Rightly Guided Caliphs who made their homes available for the people to listen to knowledge gatherings. The scholar, who delivered a tausiyah (religious guidance) in Arabic and translated by Mohd Na'im, also advised Muslims to continue to adhere to the Quran and obey the commands and prohibitions as stated in the holy book. 'When we return to the Quran, Allah will protect us and we will be successful people,' he said. — Bernama
