Misled by Google Maps, car falls into ditch near Mumbai

Hans India27-07-2025
Mumbai: A woman drove her car into a ditch in Navi Mumbai on Friday as she was following directions through Google Maps. The incident took place while she was on her way from Belapur to Ulwe. The woman was supposed to take the Bay bridge in Belapur, but Google Maps navigated her through a route beneath the bridge - leading to Dhruvatara Jetty. Unaware, she continued to follow the directions. Minutes later, the woman drove into the water. The marine security officials witnessed the accident and quickly engaged in pulling the woman out of the ditch - who was seen floating in the water.
She was rescued within a few minutes and was not injured. Her car was also pulled out of the ditch. This isn't the first time Google Maps has mislead people and caused accidents - some even tragic. Last year, three people died after the car, being navigated using Google Maps, climbed onto a damaged bridge and plunged into the river flowing 50 feet below in Faridpur when it was travelling from Bareilly to Dataganj in the Badaun district.
Google, responding to the accident, had asserted that it was assisting the authorities in the investigation. "Our deepest sympathies go out to the families. We're working closely with the authorities and providing our support to investigate the issue," it said. In another incident, a tourist group from Hyderabad drove into a swollen stream while following Google Maps in Kerala. The road they were travelling on was covered by water overflowing from the stream due to the heavy rains and since the tourists were unfamiliar with the area, they drove right into the water body while navigating using Google maps. All four escaped unharmed.

Fly-by-night duo nabbed at airport

Kolkata: Five persons were arrested, including two from the airport when they were trying to flee, in connection with multiple cases of financial fraud. Siddharth Doshi and Shiva Kumar Sonkar, both with links to Maharashtra and Rajasthan, were apprehended at the Kolkata airport in connection to an FIR filed on Sept 25 last year under sections of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and BNS, 2023. Searches at their homes led to seizure of four mobile phones, a laptop, five debit cards, and cash amounting to Rs 4 lakh. Both were produced in court on Wednesday, with cops taking them into custody. Earlier, three more individuals — Rajesh Kumar Khandelwal from Bansdroni, and Abhinav P Mathran and Hemant Sikaria from Salt Lake — were arrested in connection with a fake investment app scam that defrauded victims of about Rs 40 lakh. The arrests resulted in the seizure of multiple electronic devices, including four mobile phones, a router, a laptop, six bank debit cards, 17 chequebooks, and three bank paying slips. Cyber expert Bivas Chatterjee has been roped in to draft a letter to Google, urging it to enhance monitoring of apps that facilitate financial fraud. "These apps are often uploaded for a few days or weeks. Once reported for fraud, they are removed, only to be reintroduced under new names and interfaces," a cop said.

A lawsuit against Tesla: What Elon Musk promised but didn't deliver

A Tesla shareholder has sued the company and Elon Musk for securities fraud, alleging misleading claims about its robotaxi technology. The lawsuit says Musk's promises overstated safety and downplayed regulatory hurdles. read more A Tesla shareholder has filed a lawsuit in Texas, accusing the electric vehicle giant and its CEO Elon Musk of securities fraud, The Information has reported. The lawsuit claims that Tesla and Musk made 'false and misleading statements' about the safety of their robotaxis and downplayed the level of regulatory scrutiny involved in deploying autonomous vehicles. Tesla launched its robotaxi service in Austin on June 22, but the vehicles still require a human safety monitor in the passenger seat and are confined to a small, geofenced part of the city. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Musk's past promises under the scanner The 31-page complaint, filed late Monday, outlines several public statements made by Musk, arguing they were overly optimistic, misleading, and ultimately deceptive to shareholders. In 2023, Musk said, 'The trend is very clearly towards full self-driving, towards full autonomy. And I hesitate to say this, but I think we'll do it this year.' However, Tesla has yet to deliver a fully autonomous system that doesn't require human supervision. In 2024, Musk called Tesla's software a 'generalised solution,' contrasting it with Waymo's 'very localised' approach. The lawsuit claims this misrepresented the competitive landscape, as Waymo now operates fully driverless robotaxi services in five US cities, including Austin and Los Angeles. In January 2025, Musk made his boldest claim yet, saying Tesla would launch 'unsupervised Full Self Driving as a paid service in Austin in June,' with 'no one in the car.' That launch has not materialised. Tesla's current robotaxi operations in Austin and San Francisco still depend on human supervisors. Waymo pulls ahead While Tesla has struggled to meet its timelines, Waymo has surged ahead. The Google-backed company now offers driverless rides– without safety drivers– in multiple cities, outpacing Tesla in the autonomous vehicle race. Erratic robotaxi behaviour raises safety concerns Despite Tesla's safety claims, several videos posted online show its robotaxis behaving unpredictably in Austin. The lawsuit cites a June 23 Bloomberg article titled 'Tesla Robotaxi Videos Show Speeding, Driving Into Wrong Lane,' claiming the vehicles were violating traffic laws from the very first day. Another article, 'Tesla Robotaxi Incidents Draw Scrutiny From US Safety Agency,' reports that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) contacted Tesla after videos on social media raised safety concerns. The lawsuit notes that news of these incidents contributed to a decline in Tesla's stock price.

Bengaluru saree shop's ChatGPT-style display ad goes viral, fascinates the internet

Bengaluru, often in the spotlight for its tech-savvy and offbeat culture, has once again caught the internet's attention, this time, for how a local saree shop casually used a ChatGPT-style prompt in its display, blending tradition with tech in the most Bengaluru way. An image of the store's creative mobile ad design has gone viral on X.(X/@os7borne) An image of the store's creative mobile ad design has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), showing a ChatGPT-style mobile interface asking, 'Why is Varamahalakshmi festival celebrated?', a nod to the upcoming festival on August 8, when saree shopping traditionally peaks across South India. 'Local saree shop in Bangalore using ChatGPT mobile interface for an ad is a first. Earlier it would be the Google search bar design. Just Bangalore things I guess.,' wrote one user, sharing the image that has since been widely circulated. Adding to its digital-first charm, the saree store also reportedly offers modern fintech features. According to an X user, the shop offers, "pay for 11 months, get 1 month's worth free" scheme, effectively encouraging shoppers to splurge a little more on festive fashion. The unique display has sparked comparisons to another recent viral moment from the city: a photo of a Bengaluru auto driver casually watching a Naval Ravikant podcast while navigating traffic. That image, too, was dubbed 'peak Bengaluru' and resonated with the city's unique blend of hustle, intellect, and street-level innovation. As one commenter put it, 'Only in Bengaluru can a saree shop and an auto driver both go viral for tech-savvy moments.'
