Kelantan deputy MB: Illegal border crossings in Kelantan raise serious security concerns
He emphasised that Kelantan's border is an integral part of Malaysia's international boundary with Thailand and must be protected with utmost vigilance.
'The border spans approximately 105 kilometres, with most of it covering Sungai Golok, which separates Kelantan from Thailand's Narathiwat province.
'There are only three official entry points, namely Rantau Panjang, Bukit Bunga and Pengkalan Kubor. However, behind these checkpoints lie dozens of illegal crossings frequently used for cross-border activities,' he said in a statement on his official Facebook page today.
Mohamed Fadzli also noted that the region's geography and close familial ties between communities on both sides of the border further heighten its vulnerability to security threats.
In light of this, the state government stressed the need to strengthen border enforcement through increased personnel deployment, enhanced security assets and coordinated efforts among all relevant agencies.
He added that the state government is fully committed to working together to ensure the nation's borders remain secure.
'This is a shared responsibility to safeguard our sovereignty, protect public safety and secure the future of our nation,' he said. — Bernama

Proposal to separate AG-public prosecutor roles to be presented to Cabinet in August
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that a proposal to separate the roles of the Attorney General (AG) and the public prosecutor will be tabled before the Cabinet at the end of this month. "The distinction between these roles has been a long-standing request. Now we are seeing encouraging progress," Anwar said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Aug 14). He said this in response to Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu), who had asked which outdated laws were being reviewed or abolished in line with the government's reform agenda and the timeline for their implementation. Anwar said that there had been 23 legal reforms, including two constitutional amendments - one involving citizenship and the newly passed Parliament Services Act 2025. Among the reforms cited were amendments to the Evidence of Child Witness Act, the enactment of the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023, the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023, the Ombudsman Bill 2025 and the Cyber Crime Bill 2025. The Prime Minister said that five new acts were introduced and 34 acts amended in 2023; another five new acts were enacted and 57 acts amended in 2024; and four new acts have been passed, with six acts amended, along with two new bills and 11 other bills amended so far this year. On the subject of anti-party-hopping laws, Anwar said he had no objection to enhancing or updating the current legislation. – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Bangladesh have agreed to work towards establishing a cleaner and more transparent recruitment process for Bangladeshi workers. Chief Adviser to Bangladesh's government Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus said this was discussed in depth during his meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya on Tuesday. He also acknowledged existing flaws in the current process and stressed the need to "clean it up" to avoid problems for either side. "We had a very elaborate discussion on how to proceed without having trouble for the Malaysian government. "We both promised ourselves to clean up the system and to make it easier and transparent," he told Bernama. The Nobel Prize laureate said that while Malaysia needs foreign workers, Bangladesh also seeks to ensure that the recruitment of its citizens is transparent, allowing them to work abroad with dignity, proper rights and benefits. "Malaysia needs people and we need to have these people come here to make a living for themselves and their families. So both sides need each other. "There is no shortage of goodwill. It's a question of putting together and see where the things go wrong and then we track and clean it up," he said. As of February 2025, Bangladeshi nationals form the largest group of foreign workers in Malaysia, numbering at 898,970. They represent a critical workforce in the country, primarily employed in the construction, manufacturing, plantation and service sectors. The Home Ministry has implemented the Multiple Entry Visa (MEV) facility for Bangladeshi workers, effective Aug 8, underscoring Kuala Lumpur's commitment to ethical and regulated labour cooperation with Dhaka. Yunus was on a three-day official visit to Malaysia from Aug 11-14 at the invitation of Anwar, reciprocating the Prime Minister's visit to Dhaka in October 2024. – Bernama

Lorry driver who run over policeman with 4WD charged with attempted murder
KUALA LUMPUR: A lorry driver pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here on Thursday (Aug 14) to a charge of attempting to kill a policeman by running him over with a four-wheel drive vehicle, causing him to suffer injuries. Muhammad Farhan Baharudin, 34, was charged with committing the offence against Koperal Mohamad Sallehin Ab Rahman, 35, causing the victim to suffer an 'abrasion wound over right knee and right elbow bruising over right lower chest wall', injuries which could have been fatal. The offence was allegedly committed at the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Expressway (AKLEH) exit to Jalan Tun Razak at 9.05am on Aug 8 this year. The charge, under Section 307 of the Penal Code, provides a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine or imprisonment for a maximum of 20 years if injury is caused upon conviction. Judge Izralizam Sanusi allowed him bail of RM8,000 with one surety and also ordered him to report to a nearby police station once a month. The court set Oct 6 for mention. Deputy Public Prosecutor Faizah Khalilah Zaberi appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Mohd Fikah Sanusi represented the accused. - Bernama
