
How humans could travel millions of light years to distant planets in SECONDS
From Interstellar to Star Wars, science fiction is filled with stories of how humans might travel through the universe to visit distant worlds.
But even with our most advanced modern rockets, travelling to the edges of our own solar system might take most of a human lifetime.
However, scientists say that there is a way humanity could travel millions of light years in seconds.
By passing through wormholes in the fabric of space and time itself, we might be able to travel to the most distant stars with ease.
A wormhole, much like a black hole, is a structure which arises when gravity is so strong that it bends the fabric of the universe.
Einstein's theories about the universe predict that spacetime can be bent in such a way that it creates a 'bridge' between two different points in the spacetime.
Professor Dejan Stojkovic, a cosmologist from Buffalo University, told MailOnline: 'Theoretically, there is no limit on how far we could travel that way.
'Two distant points could be billions of light years away along the regular space, and only a few seconds away along the wormhole.'
What are wormholes?
Dr Andreea Font, a theoretical astrophysicist from Liverpool John Moores University, told MailOnline: 'Wormholes are 'tunnels' in the fabric of space and time that can shortcut the normal path between two far-away regions in our universe.'
According to Einstein, an object with mass warps the fabric of spacetime like a weight being dropped onto a rubber sheet. These curves are what create the force of gravity.
But Einstein's equations also have some extremely weird solutions when gravity starts to become extremely strong.
'For example, we know that black holes can bend the space around them under the influence of gravity,' says Dr Font.
'In principle, the geometry of space-time can be folded and bent in such a way that a tunnel can be established between two massive black holes at faraway places.'
The connection between these distant points is what scientists call a wormhole.
Where this tunnel emerges into space is called the mouth and the tunnel is called the throat.
A wormhole is made up of two mouths which could be anywhere in the universe, and a throat which connects them.
Can wormholes be used to travel through space?
In Einstein's view, spacetime isn't flat, but curved, crumpled, and bent by the forces of gravity.
Professor Stojkovic explains that wormholes take advantage of these folds, punching right through from one point to another.
Instead of taking the long journey over the curving surface of spacetime from one point to another, we can just take the direct route through the throat of the wormhole.
It doesn't even matter how far apart the mouths are in conventional space, with enough folding from gravity they can be almost touching in spacetime.
In theory, humans might be able to exploit this fact to travel enormous distances in just seconds.
Professor Stojkovic says: 'If the wormhole's throat is large enough to fit a spaceship, then we can use the shortcut that the wormhole provides.'
How can humans travel billions of light-years
Even travelling near the speed of light, distant stars and galaxies still might take many human lifetimes to reach.
If we want to get there faster, we could use galactic 'shortcuts' in the form of wormholes.
Wormholes are structures formed when intense gravity bends spacetime over on itself.
Where two 'sheets' of spacetime become stuck together, this forms a bridge known as a wormhole.
By traversing this wormhole, we could travel billions of light-years in just seconds.
Provided there is a wormhole mouth at your starting point and another at your destination, you could travel anywhere in the universe faster than the speed of light.
How to build a warp drive
Although this is fantastic in theory, the difficult part is keeping a wormhole open long enough for you to safely pass through it.
Dr Font explains: 'Wormholes come in two categories, some are traversable and some are not.
'Of those that are traversable, meaning that the path between the two ends remains open, it is not always possible to keep it open long enough for actual travel to take place.'
Because of the intense gravitational forces involved in folding spacetime, wormholes are very unstable and the throat is likely to collapse in on itself.
To get around this any future 'warp drive' technology would need a way of holding the wormhole's mouth open for long enough to traverse it.
Professor Stojkovic says: 'To provide stability one has to counter the attractive force of gravity and prevent the collapse of the wormhole walls.
'For that, we either need large amounts of negative energy, or some equivalent setup which would provide repulsive force to stabilize the wormhole.
In physics, 'negative energy' occurs when a region of space has less energy than the surrounding empty void of space.
Although this sounds like something out of science fiction, negative energy is a consequence of quantum physics and scientists have managed to make small amounts under laboratory conditions.
However, the amount of negative energy required to stabilise a traversable wormhole far exceeds anything humanity is able to produce.
Professor Stojkovic says: 'Currently we have such capabilities. But this does not mean that we will not have them in a distant future, nor that some alien civilization does not have them now.
'Finally, human building power is hardly capable of competing with the building power of nature. So nature-made wormholes may already exist, and we may take advantage of them someday.'
Are wormholes real?
However, if we want to build a warp drive out of natural wormholes we might encounter a pretty major problem.
While wormholes are theoretically possible, scientists don't have any direct evidence that they exist.
That could be because wormholes are extremely difficult to detect, or it might just be because they don't exist in our universe.
Since wormholes are so inherently unstable, some scientists think they couldn't possibly exist in reality.
This has led some scientists to suggest that wormholes might be nothing more than a useful theoretical tool to help think about Einstein's equations.
However, scientists are now developing the tools to find wormholes if they are out there, and Professor Stojkovic is optimistic that the evidence will arrive someday.
'Nature, whose building power is much superior to human one, always finds a way to build something which is described by solutions of legitimate theories like General Relativity.
'The Schwarzschild solution describing black holes was derived in 1916, and leading scientists for the next 50 years simply refused to believe there is anything in nature which is that strange.
'Today, we see black holes everywhere in the universe. I believe something similar will happen with wormholes.'
EINSTEIN'S GENERAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY
In 1905, Albert Einstein determined that the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers, and that the speed of light in a vacuum was independent of the motion of all observers - known as the theory of special relativity.
This groundbreaking work introduced a new framework for all of physics, and proposed new concepts of space and time.
He then spent 10 years trying to include acceleration in the theory, finally publishing his theory of general relativity in 1915.
This determined that massive objects cause a distortion in space-time, which is felt as gravity.
At its simplest, it can be thought of as a giant rubber sheet with a bowling ball in the centre.

As the ball warps the sheet, a planet bends the fabric of space-time, creating the force that we feel as gravity.
Any object that comes near to the body falls towards it because of the effect.
Einstein predicted that if two massive bodies came together it would create such a huge ripple in space time that it should be detectable on Earth.
It was most recently demonstrated in the hit film film Interstellar.
In a segment that saw the crew visit a planet which fell within the gravitational grasp of a huge black hole, the event caused time to slow down massively.

UFO sphere scientists uncover incredible features in ball 'that fell from space'
The Buga Sphere was spotted zig-zagging in the sky over the Colombian town in a way no conventional aircraft is capable of before being recovered shortly after it landed in a field A metallic sphere covered in bizarre symbols which was recovered after it 'landed' in a field in Colombia has been subjected to new analysis with researchers citing shocking evidence it is a genuine UFO. Dubbed the Buga Sphere, it was spotted March 2 over the town of Buga, zig-zagging around the sky in a way no conventional aircraft is capable of. The object was recovered shortly after it landed in a field and has been since analysed by scientists. Researchers claimed they found three layers of metal-like material and 18 microspheres surrounding a central nucleus they are calling 'a chip.' Now new analysis has given rise to evidence which points to a strong, decaying ionized field coming from the Buga sphere, said Rodolfo Garrido, a Mexican engineer working with a team from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In a recent appearance on Maussan Televisión, Garrido revealed what scientists have found out so far about the sphere and its purpose, following months of research. He revealed to stunned viewers that the sphere had increased in weight since it landed and was now five times heavier, despite never changing in volume. Garrido said the sphere was capable of generating its own electromagnetic field, speaking to UFO researcher Jaime Maussan on the TV program Interstellar. He added this field was used to levitate above the ground. However not everyone is convinced by the findings. Dr Julia Mossbridge of the University of San Diego's Department of Physics and Biophysics cast doubt on the outlandish reports, instead saying the sphere was a 'man-made art project'. Jaime Maussan has previously been involved with several debunked UFO claims in the past. He has claimed to have discovered evidence of real UFO sightings, only for it to be debunked as a comet or star in the night sky. Maussan has also claimed to have discovered physical evidence of mummified alien corpses on three separate occasions, but none of the incidents have been proven true. In this case, however, scientists at UNAM said this levitation system somehow allowed the sphere to maintain a low weight of just over four pounds. The sphere's flight, which was caught on several TikTok videos, was allegedly interrupted after it struck a power cable, causing its electromagnetic field to destabilise and eventually land. The UNAM team just published their newest report on the Buga sphere. The new paper details how a microscope was set to 2,000 times normal view in order to see the hidden wiring, invisible to the human eye. The complex wire system is said to run in different directions and connects to the copper pins and points on the sphere's surface, including something resembling a microchip. During the broadcast on June 7, Maussan said: "This is just the beginning. Strategies and plans are already being developed. Various laboratories have been hired to attempt reverse engineering to understand how this sphere works." Initial X-rays of the sphere in March could not find any seams that would provide evidence of how the object was built. But, despite that, Dr Mossbridge is doubtful that the mysterious probe was an actual UFO. The cognitive neuroscientist also noted that no direct connection has been made between videos of the Buga sphere and the actual metal object found in the Colombian woods.

Scientists uncover second 'hidden city' beneath Egypt's Giza pyramids
Scientists who claimed earlier this year to have found a massive subterranean city under the Pyramids of Giza now say they have unearthed a second city. The team of Italian researchers, who claimed they found huge underground structures below the Khafre pyramid in March, now say they've found more evidence of a second 'hidden city'. These new subterranean structures, apparently found underneath the Mankaure pyramid, could 'prove' the existence of a massive subterranean complex which links the three Giza pyramids thousands of feet below the surface. The announcement sparked controversy amongst archaeologists and Egyptologists, who said the unverified claims are 'a total scam' and argued the technology used isn't able to penetrate deeply enough into the ground. The Pyramids of Giza, along with the Great Sphinx, are located west of Egypt's capital Cairo, and the methods used to build the huge structures are still shrouded in mystery thousands of years on. Filippo Biondi, co-author of the research, told MailOnline their data shows a 90% probability that the Menkaure shares the same pillars as Khafre. 'Objective analysis of the tomography data, which, as experimental measurements, strongly indicate that the structures we identified beneath Khafre are also present under Menkaure,' Filippo said. 'We firmly believe that the Giza structures are interconnected, reinforcing our view that the pyramids are merely the tip of the iceberg of a colossal underground infrastructural complex. 'This network likely consists of a dense system of tunnels linking the main subterranean structures. 'The measurements reveal pillar-like structures with consistent characteristics. 'Given that Menkaure is smaller than Khafre, we believe the number of pillars is likely even but fewer than those under Khafre.' It's estimated there are eight pillars under Khafre pyramid, which are estimated to be more than 2,000ft long and feature spiral-like structures. The researchers say finding similar pillars underneath Mankaure pyramid support their theory that a 'megastructure' hides thousands of feet underneath the sands. When asked about the purpose of the hidden structures, Filippo said: 'At this stage, we're still gathering information to thoroughly study the matter, but we can confidently say that the operation of this structure likely involves the natural elements: air, water, fire and earth. Archaeologists estimate the three Pyramids of Giza are about 4,500 years old, but Filippo and his team theorise these pillar structures could have been built by a lost ancient civilisation about 38,000 years ago. They suggest a highly advanced prehistoric society was wiped out by a global cataclysm, possibly caused by a comet impact, around 12,800 years ago. But some have drawn comparison to conspiracy theories that it was in fact aliens who built the pyramids. New ‘Star Wars' cancer treatment which pulverises tumours with sound waves
The NHS is set to become the only health system in Europe to use ground-breaking histotripsy technology, which removes the need for surgery by firing pulses to form micro bubbles from gases A 'Star Wars' treatment which zaps hard-to-reach cancers using sound waves is being trialled on the NHS. The technology, called histotripsy, removes the need for surgery and instead fires pulses to form micro bubbles from gases within the tumour. These 'bubble clouds' expand and contract in microseconds to destroy the cancer cells. The targeted ultrasound technology currently only available in the US will now be trialled by the NHS on liver cancer patients in Cambridge. If successful regulators say it will be a 'a major step forward' which it is hoped could be used to destroy pancreatic and kidney cancers. The Government says Health Secretary Wes Streeting intervened to authorise controlled early access to the device, as part of a new Innovative Devices Access Pathway (ADIP) programme. Mr Streeting, who previously had kidney cancer, told the Mirror: 'I've slashed red tape, so NHS patients will be the first in Europe to benefit from a revolutionary and non-invasive liver cancer treatment – that uses ultrasound technology to destroy tumours - years earlier than planned. "Patients stand to see faster recovery times, fewer dangerous complications, and shorter hospital stays. We are slashing red tape, so game-changing new treatments reach the NHS front line quicker.' In contrast to invasive surgery, the targeted ultrasound can take just 30 minutes with 'limited or no pain' and involves a quick recovery. It destroys tissue at cellular and sub-cellular levels while avoiding the ionising damage of radiation or the heat damage from thermal treatments. The bubble clouds cause the cancerous mass to break apart, destroying tumor cells and leaving the debris to be eliminated by the immune system. US cancer expert Dr Jennifer Linehan, of St John's Cancer Institute, said the device could in future also be used to pulverise prostate and bladder cancers. She said: 'This technology kills tumours without even touching you. Sometimes when I'm talking to patients I tell them this is ' Star Wars technology' because there are no cuts, there's no poking, there's nothing that's going inside you from outside. It's all happening with a focused beam of ultrasound to destroy the tumours.' The first cancer patients in Europe to access the treatment under such a scheme will be treated for their liver cancer at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge this summer. The machine, manufactured by HistoSonics, is expected to be fully installed later this year, where it will be used initially to treat patients with primary and secondary liver tumours. Wider research on how this could potentially treat tumours in other organs is underway. James Pound, innovation director at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), said: 'We've shown we can get promising technologies to patients faster without compromising safety. It's a major step forward for patients with liver cancer and shows how the UK can be a frontrunner in supporting responsible innovation that meets real clinical need.' Patients undergoing histotripsy are given general anesthesia to control breathing and to minimize movements of targeted tumours An evaluation of the NHS pilot will be published later this year by the Department of Health and Social Care. Histotripsy has already been approved to treat liver tumors by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Roland Sinker, Chief Executive of Cambridge University Hospitals said: 'Histotripsy is an exciting new technology that will make a huge difference to patients. By offering this non-invasive, more targeted treatment we can care for more people as outpatients and free up time for surgeons to treat more complex cases. 'The faster recovery times mean patients will be able to return to their normal lives more quickly, which will also reduce pressure on hospital beds, helping us ensure that patients are able to receive the right treatment at the right time.'
