How to use Quick Share — your Android's equivalent of AirDrop

Tom's Guide29-05-2025
There are loads of ways of sharing files between devices. You can attach them to emails or messages, upload them to cloud storage and send a link, or even store them on USB drives if you want to get physical.
But there are easier ways of transferring files and, on Android, Quick Share reigns supreme. Formally called Nearby Share, Quick Share is Android's version of AirDrop on the iPhone.
This feature looks for nearby devices and beam your photos, files and other information across. It's also a default app, so you should have it on your Android device ready to go. And all it takes is the tap of an icon to get started.
But what if you don't have a recipient device close to hand? Don't worry. Quick Share has that covered too with links and QR codes available. So, let's check out how to use this feature and make the most of it.
In most cases, you're going to be using Quick Share to share files with others so let's see how it's done.
If you need to securely transfer files between nearby Android devices, Chromebooks and Windows, you need to launch the app containing the file you wish to share.
For example, if you want to share a web page, you should open Chrome or if you want to share an image, launch Photos.
You then need to select the file you want to share.
You then need to locate the Share button. In Photos, you will see it below an open image or it may be hidden within a menu.
In either case, simply tap the Share button and you will be shown a set of options.
Look for and tap the Quick Share button.
Your Android phone will scan for nearby devices but you will need to have a recipient device turned on and logged in.
When you see a device you wish to share with, just tap that device and the file will be transferred.
If the device you want to share your file with is not listed, then you can tap QR code or link instead.
The QR code can then be shown to the intended recipient and, when it's scanned, the file can be downloaded. The code can be copied and sent in any way you wish — email, text and so on.
Files can also be shared with a contact regardless of how near or far they are.
Look under Share to Contacts and, you can either select a name or tap View Contact, then choose someone to share the file with.
You may also want to be able to receive files via Quick Share but you can control how this works for you.
To determine how Quick Share works on your device, launch the Settings app and select Connected devices.
In some instances, you may need to tap on Connection preferences then select Quick Share, but you may also find you can immediately tap Quick Share.
Now look under the category Who can share with you. By default, this is set to Contacts and that's a sensible option: it means that only trusted people can share files with you.
If you're happy with this and would prefer total privacy, you can select No-one but there is also a third option. Select Done.
There can be circumstances where you would like to receive a file but you wouldn't necessarily want to store that person's contact details in your phone.
In this case, you can select Everyone which means your Android device is open to receiving files from any nearby device. For privacy and security, this option only remains active for 10 minutes.
And there you go. You now know how to use Quick Share on your Android. There are other ways of transferring data depending on what you're trying to achieve.
Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.

Apple to invest another $100 billion into the US to avoid tariffs

Apple plans to invest an additional $100 billion in the US, the company announced on Wednesday. The investment follows President Donald's Trump's previously announced plans to raise tariffs on India by an additional 25 percent (bringing the total tariff to 50 percent) for purchasing oil from Russia. Apple relies heavily on manufacturers in India to create the iPhone, so adding to its already $500 billion investment in the US is likely a way to avoid being impacted by the tariffs. "Today, we're proud to increase our investments across the United States to $600 billion over four years and launch our new American Manufacturing Program," Apple CEO Tim Cook shared in a statement. "This includes new and expanded work with 10 companies across America. They produce components that are used in Apple products sold all over the world, and we're grateful to the President for his support." In February, Apple said its original $500 billion investment plan would go towards building Apple Intelligence servers in the US, and that the majority of the new jobs the funding would provide would be focused on R&D, silicon engineering, software development and AI and machine learning. As part of this additional investment, Apple says it's also deepening its relationship and investment in component makers working in the US, like Corning and Amkor. Corning produces the glass for iPhones and Apple Watches, and the company says that "soon, every iPhone and Apple Watch sold around the world will be built with Kentucky-made cover glass." Apple is investing in Amkor to take advantage of the company's "advanced chip packaging and test facility in Arizona." Apple says its "leading the creation of an end-to-end silicon supply chain in the United States" through its investments. In a statement to Bloomberg before the announcement, a White House spokesperson suggested the new investment would "help reshore the production of critical components to protect America's economic and national security." The Trump administration has previously called for Apple to make the iPhone in the US, something CNN reports is difficult to downright impossible. Apple's current strategy for dealing with Trump is similar to how it handled the President during his first term. In 2019, Apple CEO Time Cook and Trump "opened" a Mac Pro factory in Texas. The factory had been up-and-running since 2013, but the President was pleased by the optics of making a deal. Apple's partnership with Amkor was similarly announced years ago in 2023, but is being trotted out now because it fits with Apple's "American Manufacturing Program." Apple is a trillion-dollar company that can afford to spend a few billion to avoid paying tariffs, but it also likely planned to increase its investment in the US anyway to keep up with competitors. It's entirely possible the company is just packaging its spending in a way that flatters the President.

Tim Cook just got what he wanted

Tim Cook gifted President Donald Trump an American-made glass engraving at the White House today — but it was the Apple CEO who walked away with the real prize. On Wednesday, Cook presented Trump with an inscribed piece of Apple -produced glass made in Kentucky that sits upon a 24k gold base made in Utah to celebrate the tech giant's "American Manufacturing Program." "This glass comes off the Corning line, engraved for President Trump," Cook told reporters during a ceremony in the Oval Office. "It is a unique unit of one." Cook and Apple aren't walking away empty-handed. Companies that "are building in the United States," like Apple, won't be subject to a forthcoming 100% tariff on imports of semiconductors and chips, Trump said. "The good news for companies like Apple is if you're building in the United States or have committed to build, without question, in the United States, there will be no charge," Trump said. Cook said the gift was designed by a former US Marine Corps. Corporal who now works for Apple. Cook's signature is also etched into the gift. Apple announced that it is adding an additional $100 billion to its existing pledge to spend $500 billion in the US over the next four years. As part of its investment, Cook said that soon, 100% of all cover glass for all iPhones and Apple Watches will be manufactured in the US. It is still a far cry from Trump's hope of a made-in-the-USA iPhone. When a reporter pressed Cook on the possibility of an American-made iPhone, Trump echoed Cook's view that Apple already makes many of the popular smartphone's components in the US. "We've been talking about it, and the whole thing is set up in other places, and it's been there for a long time, so in terms of the cost and all," Trump said. "But I think we may incentivize him enough that one day he'll be bringing that." While it's a win for Cook, Apple isn't fully in the clear from the impact of Trump's tariffs. It remains uncertain if the tech giant will be subject to the president's stiffer tariffs on India, which are aimed at punishing the nation for continuing to buy Russian oil. Cook said during Apple's recent earnings call that the company's financial hit from tariffs last quarter was $800 million. Apple said those costs are likely to balloon to $1.1 billion in the September quarter. The Apple CEO has come bearing gifts before. In Trump's final financial disclosure before leaving the White House in 2021, the president reported receiving a $5,999 MacBook Pro computer. It's also not the first time Cook's savvy relationship-building skills have earned the president's praise. In 2019, Trump said Cook was the only tech executive who calls him directly, and the Apple CEO successfully landed carve-outs for some of Apple's products during the tariffs implemented during Trump's first term.

Apple adds fresh $100 billion to US investment pledge

STORY: TRUMP: "...this is the largest investment Apple has ever made in America." U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Apple will spend another $100 billion in U.S. investments... with CEO Tim Cook standing by his side in the Oval Office. TRUMP: 'The company is also unveiling its ambitious new American manufacturing program, which will bring factories and assembly lines across our country all roaring to life. // And Apple will massively increase spending on its domestic supply chain for the iPhone and will build the largest and most sophisticated smart glass production line in the world." The move brings the technology giant's total investment commitment to the country to $600 billion over the next four years. COOK: 'American innovation is central to everything we do. Our products are designed here. We are hiring and growing here, and we support 450,000 jobs with thousands of suppliers and partners in all 50 states.' The decision comes as Trump pursues an aggressive tariff and trade agenda aimed at moving some manufacturing back into the United States. But it could take decades to set up the kind of production capabilities in the U.S. that currently exist overseas, if it's even possible at all, says Craig Moffett, founding partner and senior research analyst at Moffett Nathanson. "It's certainly not realistic to think that they can start making iPhones in the United States. I will offer what I think is a really telling example, which is about a year ago when they were ramping up production of the iPhone 16 Pro, they needed to increase production in China. In the span of less than a month, they were able to add 50,000 employees at the rate of about $3 per hour in order to ramp up production. They were able to do that in what... literally about two weeks, There's simply no possibility that you could do something like that in the United States at any price." Apple said the new investment will include an expansion of its partnership with Corning that will lead to the production of glass in the U.S. for every iPhone and Apple Watch sold around the world. The technology giant said in February it would spend $500 billion in U.S. investments for a massive factory in Texas for artificial intelligence servers while adding about 20,000 research and development jobs across the country. Apple has also been shifting production of its devices bound for the U.S., sourcing iPhones from India and other products such as Macs and Apple Watches from Vietnam. Shares of Apple closed up five percent on Wednesday.
