Ayuso wins on Giro mountain, Roglic takes overall lead
Spanish climber Juan Ayuso won stage seven of the Giro d'Italia on Friday as Primoz Roglic took the overall lead on a day where the principal contenders all turned up.
This 160km run was the first skirmish between the main title pretenders and lived up to its billing as a battle royale played out in the final 3km of a 12km climb at around a 10 percent incline.
This was a big moment for the 22-year-old Ayuso as he claimed his first Grand Tour win and took the white jersey as the top young rider.
"It's my fourth Grand Tour, and I was sometimes very close, but I never managed to pull it off," he said of the red letter day.
"So to finally do it today in my first Giro d'Italia is something super special and I will always remember it."
Another youngster in 21-year-old Isaac Del Toro of UAE was second. But Ineos' Colombian Egan Bernal in third at just 4sec was big news.
The former Giro and Tour de France champion has struggled back from injuries that almost killed him, and his smile and tears at the finish line spoke long.
Overnight leader Mads Pedersen pushed his time in pink as far as it could go until wilting on the final climb. The likeable Dane won three stages and was the star of the race's early going.
New pink jersey Slovenian Red Bull rider Primoz Roglic was fourth on the day and the pre-race favourite now leads the Giro just 4sec ahead of Ayuso, who rode away from the climb clique 400m from the line.
Colombian Bernal appeared to follow but then held back, while fellow South American and former Giro winner Richard Carapaz was also in the mix at 4sec in eighth.
Italians Giulio Ciccone and Antonio Tiberi were fifth and sixth on the mountaintop finish as home hopes fly high on this edition of the race, littered with mountains over the next 14 stages.
Stage eight on Saturday is a similar medium mountain stage while Sunday's stage nine runs over relatively flat terrain to Siena.

Karl-Anthony Towns' message for Ricky Rubio after guard's cryptic post
The post Karl-Anthony Towns' message for Ricky Rubio after guard's cryptic post appeared first on ClutchPoints. Last season, Ricky Rubio stepped away from basketball and said that his NBA career would be over after 12 seasons as he addressed his mental health issues. He then returned to action with Barcelona in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and with the Spanish national team in the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers. Since then, he had been pretty much quiet on social media, but he recently shared a cryptic message about his career. Advertisement 'I took this year to reflect on my career and my life, and I've realized that if I've gotten to where I am today, it's not because of the assists I've given, but because of the assists I've received,' Rubio wrote on X, formerly Twitter. 'This isn't a goodbye, it's a thank you to all the people who have helped me along the way.' This message led many people to probably think that Rubio was done playing for good, and it caught Karl-Anthony Towns off guard because he had a message for him on Instagram. 'Incredible journey [Ricky Rubio] Enjoy this next chapter,' Towns wrote on his story. Towns and Rubio played with each other on the Minnesota Timberwolves back in the day. Is Ricky Rubio retiring? Though Rubio posted that initial message of thanking everybody in his career, he circled back and gave clarity on what he was trying to say. Advertisement 'This is something I'd like to make clear. This isn't a farewell,' Rubio said. 'It's simply a thank you. It comes from my year of reflection, and I wanted to do something that's rarely done: to thank those who have been or are important to you. But it has no other message. 'I don't know yet what will happen with my career. That should be the next thing to think about. This is something that came to mind now, and I want to convey it now that I'm back professionally, although I'm forced to stop due to health issues.' Rubio returned to European basketball in 2024 for the first time since 2011, as he joined Barcelona in February to focus on his mental health. He parted ways with the club at the end of the season. During the 2023–24 season, he averaged 17 minutes, 4.7 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.2 rebounds. With his clarifying message, it looks like Rubio is not sending his farewells and is leaving the door open. Advertisement 'I might play again – why not? – or I might not, and that wouldn't be a bad idea either. It's something I'd like to consider in the near future,' Rubio said. 🚨 River bid for Román Vega falls short for Argentinos Jrs
With the transfer of Franco Mastantuono to Real Madrid practically confirmed —although he would leave after the Club World Cup—, River Plate will go to the market in search of substitutes for the 17-year-old jewel, who had established himself as a starter and key piece in Marcelo Gallardo's team. But the Millionaire is also betting on reinforcing other key positions, and the payment of the millionaire clause for Mastantuono's departure will give the Núñez club room for maneuver. Advertisement Thus, a few minutes ago it was revealed that River made a concrete offer to Argentinos Juniors for the pass of left-back Román Vega. Insufficient offer According to information from César Luis Merlo, the figure of around six million dollars that River proposed for 80% of Vega's card was insufficient for the leadership of the Bicho de la Paternal. As is usual in these cases, it is expected that both clubs will initiate negotiations to find an agreement that serves all parties. Román Vega, 21-year-old left-back, was trained in the youth teams of Argentinos Juniors, the world's nursery, but had an early European experience when he was loaned out in 2022 to play for Barça Atlètic, the FC Barcelona reserve team that competes in the Spanish third tier. Vega made his debut in the 2021 League Cup with the Argentinos Jrs. first team, at just 17 years old, and already has 63 appearances with that shirt, with one goal and three assists. Diego Lopes, Yair Rodriguez trade barbs over avoiding fights – with more than each other
Diego Lopes, Yair Rodriguez trade barbs over avoiding fights – with more than each other The drama between Diego Lopes and Yair Rodriguez has ramped up. After getting into a heated confrontation at the UFC 314 pre-fight press conference in April, it seemed things died down until now. Lopes, a former UFC title challenger, took to Instagram on Monday to accuse "El Pantera" of turning him down for this year's Noche UFC event in September. "Hey, Yair Rodriguez, I just learned that you got a call from Hunter (Campbell), and you turned down to fight me at Noche UFC," Lopes wrote on Instagram in Spanish. "Where's the man that was in front of me at the press conference?" During their UFC tenure, Lopes and Rodriguez appeared to be friendly toward each other until that UFC 314 fight week in April. Rodriguez, who fought and defeated "Pitbull" on that card, went off on Lopes, accusing him of jumping his friend, Marco Beltran, whom Lopes submitted and had beef with outside the UFC. Rodriguez also criticized Lopes for representing Mexico. Lopes is from Brazil but has been living and fighting out of Mexico for many years. Tension has been high between the two since, and this latest back-and-forth proved that it's not settled. It didn't take long for Lopes to get a response from Rodriguez on Monday, as hours later Rodriguez posted a video on his Instagram, confirming that he did reject the fight but due to injuries from his fight against Patricio Freire. "This damn sport is tough. I'd love for things to be different because it's become a circus, to be honest," Rodriguez said in Spanish. "The p*ssy Diego Lopes is saying that I don't want to fight against him, and that's not the case at all. I'm a little disappointed with UFC with the fact that they offered me a fight with, because they just offered to fight him. Let's take a step back first. What happened? When I had the chance to fight Diego, he said no because I was coming off a loss, but now that he's coming off a loss, he wants to fight me. I don't think he's very consistent with what he says. I obviously don't have any problem fighting him. If you ask me, I'd rather fight him in the damn street because a fight against him in the UFC doesn't do much for me. I'm not going to get paid more. It does absolutely nothing. It won't put me in a better position either because he's coming off a loss. "I'm also still injured from the last fight, so before anything, I first have to see where I'm at with that. I went to see a doctor, and he recommended surgery. Obviously I'm avoiding that at all cost, but let's see where this situation takes me. I just wanted to come on here and clarify the situation. I have not turned down the fight, and I'd be more than happy to fight against this damn sh*t-head and his entire team, who can all suck it. So just that. I want you guys to understand my position because I'm already getting attacked, and what else can you expect. People always come and attack when you're down and hurt. But that's it. Let's see what happens with my health and if I can avoid the surgery." Rodriguez went on to accuse Lopes of turning down a fight himself. He claims rising contender Jean Silva is looking to fight Lopes, and Lopes is trying to avoid him. "In the meantime, I'd like to see Diego stop running from Jean Silva and have a showdown with him," Rodriguez said. "He's running from him. But yeah, let's see what happens with my health, and we'll take it from there." Lopes didn't stay quiet about Rodriguez's rebuttal. He made a second post on Instagram addressing the claim of avoiding Silva. "Let's look at the facts," Lopes wrote in Spanish. "After the fight against Volk, UFC contacted me asking how my health was. I gave them all the recommendations that the doctors gave me, which was that I'd be ready for September. They offered me Aaron Pico, I said yes. Two days later, I was offered Jean Silva, I said yes. When UFC changed Noche UFC to San Antonio, (UFC offered) Yair Rodriguez, I said yes. I also offered to fight Movsar Evloev and Lerone Murphy. If you have any doubts, ask Dana (White), Hunter (Campbell), or Sean (Shelby) if I've ever turned down a fight. The day that I turn down a fight would be because I have a serious health problem, and it's impossible for me to fight. My career was built accepting fights. There's a reason why I have 33 professional fights."
