Businessman fined RM300,000 for cheating Perkeso over non-existent courses
Judge Suzana Hussin meted out the sentence on Wednesday (July 2) on P. Sathia Seelan, 52, after he pleaded guilty to all 10 charges during the case mention.
The court imposed a RM30,000 fine for each charge, totalling RM300,000, and ordered the man to be jailed for 10 months if he fails to pay the fine.
According to the first to 10th charges, Sathia Seelan was accused of deceiving two Perkeso officers by submitting documents containing falsified attendance lists and participant signatures for three training courses that were never conducted. The offences, involving five companies, were allegedly committed between Dec 4, 2020, and July 22, 2021.
It prompted Perkeso to make a payment of RM496,000 to Global Education Network Sdn Bhd, owned by the accused, which the agency would not have done if it had not been deceived.
He was charged with committing the offences at the Employment Services Division, Menara Perkeso, Putrajaya, between Dec 23, 2020, and Aug 12, 2021. The charges were framed under Section 417 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to five years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
In the same proceedings, R. Nanthagopal, 43, was also fined RM300,000 or 10 months' jail, after pleading guilty to abetting Sathia Seelan in committing the offences at the same location and time.
The charge was framed under Section 417 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 109 of the same law, which provides for a maximum sentence of five years' imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Noor Syazwani Mohamad Sobry urged the court to impose a sentence which would serve as a deterrent, ensuring both accused do not repeat such offences.
Lawyer R. Babu Naidu, representing both accused, pleaded for a lighter sentence on the grounds that his clients had expressed remorse and had fully cooperated with the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) throughout the investigation since 2023. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: A 14-year-old student has been arrested for allegedly punching and threatening a teacher at a secondary school in Kajang. Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abd Yusof said the male student was arrested yesterday following a report lodged by a 29-year-old teacher. According to the police report filed on Monday, the teacher claimed he had been punched and threatened by the student on school grounds. "Preliminary investigations showed that the incident stemmed from the student skipping his physical education class, during which he was supposed to be on the field. "The teacher reprimanded him, which led to the student becoming dissatisfied and eventually getting into a fight with the complainant. "The student then punched the teacher in the face and issued threats in the presence of several teachers and students," Naazron said in a statement yesterday. He added that the case is being investigated under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation. If convicted under Section 323, the offender may face up to one year in prison, a fine not exceeding RM2,000, or both. For Section 506, the penalty includes up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both. Naazron said the student has been remanded for two days and is expected to be charged in the magistrate's court today. 'How could anyone do this to Tishant'
JOHOR BARU: A sombre mood enveloped a house in Bandar Seri Alam, Masai, as the hearse carrying six-year-old A. Tishant arrived at the premises. It was just past 9.30pm when the van from the Rembau Hospital Forensic Unit rolled into the driveway, greeted by grieving family members and relatives who had begun gathering as early as 7pm. Many were still in shock over what had happened to the boy, and they politely declined requests from the media for interviews or coverage. Among those inconsolable was a woman believed to be Tishant's great-grandmother, who briefly spoke to reporters. "He was a bright boy, so loving, and spoke such good English. "I never imagined he would be treated this way, to the point that his face no longer looked the same. "I don't know how long he had been buried in the ground. I can't believe someone could bring themselves to do such a thing." The woman, who declined to be named, said Tishant's mother has been traumatised since learning of her son's death. "My granddaughter, the boy's mother, and my daughter, Tishant's grandmother, are both unwell. "Tishant's mother loved him dearly and often took pictures of him. "We can't imagine how she will cope with this. We can only pray for strength, though we too are struggling to face this." It was reported that the boy's body was found buried in an area in Rompin, Jempol, around 4.30pm yesterday, five days after he was reported missing. Police said the discovery was made following the arrest of the boy's 36-year-old father, who was detained on the same day he lodged a missing person report on July 24. The suspect has been remanded for seven days from July 25 to assist in the investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, with the post-mortem confirming that the boy had been strangled with a cable tie.

Cops nabbed over alleged RM110,000 bribe to shield drug activities
Pahang MACC director Shukor Mahmud confirmed the arrests of four men when contacted. PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Pahang has arrested two senior police officers and a retired officer for allegedly soliciting and receiving RM110,000 in bribes to protect drug and ketum distribution activities in the state. Bernama reported that a source said the three men were arrested at around 8.30pm yesterday after arriving at MACC's Temerloh branch to provide statements. A fourth suspect was arrested earlier. MACC believes all four colluded in the illegal activity from 2022 to 2024. 'One of the suspects is believed to have received monthly bribes amounting to between RM4,000 and RM5,000 through bank transfers into his personal account, which he then distributed to others,' the source said. One of the suspects had been released on MACC bail after his statement was recorded. The remaining three are currently under a seven-day remand order until Aug 4. Pahang MACC director Shukor Mahmud confirmed the arrests when contacted.
