Rapper Kendrick Lamar lands the biggest wins at the 2025 BET Awards
Kendrick Lamar was the top winner at the BET Awards on Monday night, an awards ceremony honouring black actors, singers and sports stars.
The 30 For 30 rapper won the best male hip-hop artist award, best album of the year and the video of the year award for Not Like Us .
Lamar and filmmaker Dave Free also took home the video director of the year award at the event held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and broadcast on the BET cable channel.
"BET has always made sure they're representing the culture right and always put me in the midst of the cycle of what we represent," Lamar said on stage when accepting his award.
Host comedian Kevin Hart opened the ceremony by recognising the BET Awards' 25th anniversary and all of the "history that has been made" on the stage.
The ceremony traversed the evolution of black music, starting with a performance by R&B artist Ashanti that featured a compilation of songs, including her 2002 song Foolish.
Additional performances included other 2000s songs Ballin ' by Mustard, 1 Thing by Amerie and Like You by Bow Wow.
Hart led with jokes while also highlighting the BET Ultimate Icon Award winners of the night, including Kirk Franklin, Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg.
The special award was given to those that have paid homage to music, entertainment, advocacy and community impact.
Presented by Stevie Wonder, Foxx accepted his award and reflected on his recovery journey after having a stroke in 2023.
"I have to be honest, when I saw the in memoriam, I was, 'Man, that could have been me;," he said.
Another honour included the best female hip-hop artist award for rising rapper Doechii.
"(US President Donald) Trump is using military forces to stop protest," Doechii said in her acceptance speech, addressing the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles where the national guard and marines are being deployed.
She said: "I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be, when every time we exercise our democratic rights to protest, the military is deployed against us."

The BET Awards have been dismal for years now. This time around, however, they managed to attract actual talent. Star power was the order of the day from host Kevin Hart to some of the winners on the night. It should be noted that even though it was great to see people like Tyler Perry presenting an award, Mariah Carey was also in attendance, and they even had Snoop Dogg in the front row. Still, all those people had ulterior motives for being there. Mariah Carey is celebrating 20 years of the release of her iconic opus, The Emancipation of Mimi. She also debuted a new song at the BET Awards. Perry is hawking the release of his latest film, Straw, and Snoop Dogg needs the visibility as he has a decent album out now. Nobody is fooled; it is all just advertising. Snoop, Carey and Jamie Foxx all received awards for being icons and pivotal to the culture. The big winner on the night is a man who owes most of his recent success to Canada's Drake. Kendrick Lamar walked away with more awards than he deserves, most of which were centred around the flaccid offering GNX. Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Album of the Year, Video of the Year, and even Best Collaboration of the Year all went to the pride and joy of Compton. Future and Metro Boomin won Best Group for their efforts last year. Florida's Doechii either inflamed or put the industry plant rumours to rest when she scooped the award for Best Female Rap Artist. She used her acceptance speech to shine a light on the recent protests around immigration and deportation happening in Los Angeles. Comedian and actor Kevin Hart oversaw the responsibilities of hosting. He made fun of everyone, from lightly insisting that after parties would not be happening, as things tend to get slippery at those. A clear reference to rapper P. Diddy and the abundance of baby oil found in his home when Homeland Security raided one of his properties. Hart has enjoyed sharing the spotlight with streamers Kai Cenat and Druski. This has kept Hart relevant, and the three together are always worth a watch. Seeing behind-the-scenes footage on Cenat's stream was refreshing as all those moments happened in real time, as it were. Fans of music channels, back in the days when they played music, will recall a once immensely popular show called Total Request Live (TRL) on MTV. BET's urban response to that was a similar show called 106 and Park. Rapper Bow Wow was a large part of this. Naturally he took to the stage and let loose with some of his more memorable hits from that moment in time. Amapiano was not left out of this celebration of Black artistry. South African DJ duo TxC won Best New International Act, ensuring the amapiano fraternity was not ignored. The BET Awards has been steadily foregrounding South African music in recent years, which our artists surely appreciate. Everything from the performances to the slick delivery of the overall production was infinitely better than it has been in recent years. The star power they managed to get into the Peacock Theatre was more impressive than it was last year or the year before. Everything from the performances and the acceptance speeches was a pleasure to take in. This might be because of the 25-year milestone reached by the awards this year, or that BET, as a network, has now been around for 45 years. We can only hope the BET Hip Hop Awards will be as good. TikTok star Khaby Lame detained in US for visa violation, ‘self-deports'
Senegalese-Italian social media sensation Khaby Lame, the world's most-followed TikTok creator, was detained by US immigration authorities and forced to 'self-deport' after overstaying his visa following a high-profile appearance at the Met Gala in May. The 25-year-old influencer — whose real name is Seringe Khabane Lame and who holds Italian citizenship — was stopped by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas on June 6, officials confirmed. According to a recent post on Instagram, Lame is now in Brazil. Lame, who has amassed 162-million followers on TikTok for his trademark silent reaction videos and comedic content, had been in the US for several public engagements, including the Met Gala held in New York in early May. Sources suggest his travel documents allowed only a temporary stay, and he failed to exit the country before the visa's expiry. Rather than face formal removal proceedings, Lame was reportedly offered the opportunity to 'self-deport', a voluntary departure process often used in immigration cases involving public figures or first-time offenders. It remains unclear whether Lame will face additional restrictions on future travel to the US. Representatives for the star have not commented publicly on the matter.

SA's Amapiano DJ duo TxC wins BET award
The awards were held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, USA, on Monday night. Congratulations are in order for South African Amapiano duo TxC following their big win at the 2025 BET Awards. The prestigious awards were held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, USA, on Monday. The DJ duo, consisting of Tarryn Reid and Clairise Hefke, won the Best New International Act award. TxC was nominated alongside other Mzansi music heavyweights, Dlala Thukzin and Maglera Doe Boy. Also nominated in the same category were international stars such as Ajuliacosta (Brazil), Abigail Chams (Tanzania), Amabbi (Brazil), Dr. Yaro (France), KWN (United Kingdom), Merveille (France), Odeal (United Kingdom), and Shallipopi (Nigeria). The duo hails from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape. The childhood best friends previously told CNN that they grew up listening to Amapiano, and their career began in 2019 as two friends sharing their favourite tracks on a balcony. 'We always knew that it wasn't going to be your usual 9 to 5, but something that we built together,' said Tarryn Reid.
