
Senior man, dog found dead after N.S. house fire

A 74-year-old man and a dog were found dead in a West Head, N.S., home after a fire over the weekend.
Police and fire services responded to the structure fire on West Head Road around 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, according to an RCMP news release.
The sole occupant and the dog were pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation is ongoing, but at this time the cause of the fire is not considered to be suspicious.

Article content Less than an hour later, a second B.C. bomb blew apart Air India Flight 182 off the coast of Ireland, killing all 329 aboard. Most of the victims were Canadians of Indian origin. Article content Two B.C. men connected to the Babbar Khalsa terrorist group were charged in 2000, but acquitted by a B.C. Supreme Court judge in 2005. A third suspect, Inderjit Singh Reyat, was first convicted of manslaughter in the Narita bombing, then pleaded guilty to a second manslaughter count in the Air India blast. Article content Article content Special 40th anniversary memorial events are planned for June 23 across Canada and in Ireland, near the spot where the flight went down. Quebec police arrest 22 ‘high-risk' sex offenders after surveillance operation

Provincial police say that between June 2 and 13, officers monitored 69 people who were considered to have a 'high risk of reoffending.' Police arrested 14 people for breach of conditions, sexual offences or other crimes. They underwent eight arrest warrants for failing to comply with the federal Sex Offender Information Registration Act. Provincial police say more than 85 officers participated in the operation in cities including Montreal, Québec City, Longueuil, Laval and Gatineau. 3 charged in drug trafficking investigations in Drayton Valley

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jason Franson RCMP said community response teams helped with the arrest of three people accused of drug trafficking in the Drayton Valley area. The arrests were made during two separate investigations in the first week of June. On June 3, a 36-year-old man and 32-year-old woman, both Drayton Valley residents, were arrested after a home at the Poplar Ridge Trailer Court was searched and RCMP seized 60 grams of methamphetamine, brass knuckles and $840 in cash. The man's charges include possession for the purpose of trafficking, four counts of breaking a release order and possession of a dangerous, prohibited weapon. He was remanded into custody. The woman was charged with breaching probation and possession for the purpose of trafficking. She was released on conditions and is expected to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Drayton Valley on July 15; the man is scheduled to appear there on June 17. RCMP said they made another arrest on June 5 as a result of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation that led to the seizure of methamphetamine, fentanyl, cash and brass knuckles. A 39-year-old man from Drayton Valley was arrested and charged with trafficking fentanyl, possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl and possession of proceeds of crime. He was released on condition and is scheduled to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice on July 15.
