Kerala Chief Minister seeks help for Keralites stranded in flash floods-hit Uttarakhand
In a communique to Mr. Dhami late on Wednesday, Mr. Vijayan said media reports indicated that the travellers from Kerala remained incommunicado since disaster struck the Dharali region, situated an estimated 8,600 ft above sea level.
The flash floods had levelled buildings, including hotels and home stays, torn up roads, and destroyed the power supply, rendering the region a mobile and Internet blind spot.
Mr. Vijayan requested Mr. Dhami to inform the State government of the whereabouts and welfare of Keralites touring the Dharali region. He expressed solidarity with the Uttarakhand government and said Kerala was willing to help the ongoing search-and-rescue operations.
Mr. Vijayan's letter to Mr. Dhami comes in the wake of reports that a 28-member group of Malayalis, including several from Mumbai, were stranded in the Dharali region. Their relatives in the State had expressed concern over their welfare. They said the group, most of whom are members of an extended family, had remained incommunicado since the floods ravaged Dharali.
The relatives said the tourists had arranged the trip through a travel agency based in Haridwar. However, the agency's best efforts to locate them have not yielded any results.
The relatives said the last information they received from a group member was that they were leaving Uttarkashi for Gangotri hours before the disaster struck.

According to a Gulf News report, Gafoor bid farewell to Dubai last week after multiple parties organised by his friends and colleagues. Upon arrival at Calicut International Airport, he was greeted by a surprise reception. A busload of well-wishers shouting slogans rented a state-run KSRTC bus to carry him to his village, Maruthinchira, in Malappuram district. A celebration fit for a local hero As Gafoor entered his village aboard the bus, an escort vehicle announced through loudspeakers, 'Our own Gafoorka has landed.' His arrival was marked by a drum ensemble, followed by a public reception attended by local officials and residents. A tribute video highlighting his life's journey was also screened. 'It is all thanks to Dubai' Speaking from Maruthinchira, Gafoor told Gulf News he was overwhelmed by the grand welcome. 'It is all thanks to Dubai,' he said. 'I reached heights that I had never imagined I would because of Dubai's generosity. If anyone's life has changed because of me, it is all thanks to Dubai. I have only been a catalyst.' He added, 'I am always grateful to Dubai and the UAE for providing livelihood to not just me, but millions of Indians, especially those from Kerala. In my case, it is the fourth generation that is calling the UAE home now.' Looking ahead in Kerala Community members said Gafoor personally helped dozens from his town with paperwork and references for employment in Dubai. While he admitted he never kept count, he credited his wife of 45 years for connecting many job seekers through her network. Now back in Kerala, Gafoor plans to enjoy his homeland, reconnect with people, and oversee a company producing Arabic breads, which he had started 15 years ago. 'I've spent a lifetime building a career and helping others. Now it's time to explore life in Kerala,' he said.

UDF demands CM's resignation after court accuses political executive of subverting anti-corruption probe against ADGP
Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) Opposition stated that the court's 'damning indictment of the political executive for subverting a Vigilance investigation to exonerate Additional Director General of Police, Law and Order, M. R. Ajith Kumar, from corruption accusations had deprived Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who holds the Home portfolio, the moral right to continue in office. Leader of the Opposition V. D. Satheesan noted that the court held that the 'superpower authority controlling' the VACB, which he claimed was an unambiguous allusion to the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), devalued the Supreme Court's strictures and statutory principles of criminal procedure by conducting a pretence of a preliminary verification against Mr Ajith Kumar. Mr. Satheesan had earlier accused the officer of being a political insider, who allegedly intrigued with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leadership at the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's behest, especially during the run-up to the 2024 general elections. Quoting Shakespeare, Mr Satheesan sought to press the UDF's case for Mr Vijayan's resignation. He mentioned the adage 'Ceaser's wife must be above suspicion' applied to Mr Vijayan. Mr Satheesan stressed that those in high office should uphold the law and appear to do so justly. He noted the court had flagged an 'invisible penetration by someone into the enquiry that led to the preparation of a report favourable to the suspect (Mr Ajith Kumar)'. Mr Satheesan observed that Kerala Congress (M) founder and Finance Minister in the Oommen Chandy government, K. M. On Modi's praise for RSS, Kerala CM Pinarayi's response: ‘Selecting I-Day to glorify those subservient to British insults freedom struggle'
A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the 100 years of RSS as a 'very proud and glorious' journey of the 'world's biggest NGO', Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Saturday said 'the attempt to bestow parenthood of the Independence to RSS is a denial of history as well as an insult to the freedom struggle'. The Prime Minister, in his Independence Day speech, had lauded all RSS volunteers for their dedicated service to the nation. 'A hundred years ago, an organisation was born – the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Singh. Its hundred years of service to the nation have been a very proud and glorious page (in history),' he said. The Congress-led Opposition had on Friday targeted the PM, saying his comments were an 'insult to the freedom struggle'. Vijayan, in a statement, said, 'The attempt to attribute the parenthood of independence to the RSS, which was banned post-assassination of Gandhi, and to V D Savarkar, who faced trial in the conspiracy, is a denial of history. Selecting Independence Day to glorify those who had been subservient to the British is meant to insult the freedom struggle.' 'With such ludicrous steps, an organisation like RSS with a toxic history of divisive politics cannot be whitewashed. The Prime Minister, choosing his Independence Day speech to glorify RSS, is tantamount to insulting that very day itself,' he said. Vijayan also came out against the photo of V D Savarkar above Mahatma Gandhi on the Independence Day greeting card of the Ministry of Petroleum. 'It seems to be part of a larger conspiracy. What is getting reflected is the fear of those who are afraid of the history of the freedom struggle,' he said. The CPI(M) politburo member said Indians had rallied for the independence struggle, setting aside differences over caste, religion, attire, and language. RSS was then in the role of traitor, he said, adding that it had openly expressed opposition to the fundamental principles of the freedom struggle movement. He said the Hindu Mahasabha led by Savarkar, who had prostrated before the colonial powers, had decided to boycott the Independence Day celebrations. Now, there is an attempt to project Savarkar as a leader of the freedom struggle instead of Mahatma Gandhi, he said. 'Do those who called to observe August 14 as partition horror day have reverence towards Independence Day? RSS shoulders the weight of hatred and communal riots. The glorious history of the Indian freedom struggle is not meant for them,' he said.
