B.C. forestry executive warns against cutting bad deal after U.S. raises tariffs
Brian Menzies, executive director of the Independent Wood Processors Association of British Columbia, says being 'kowtowed and pushed over' is neither good for Canada nor the United States.
Menzies says 'people respect people who stand up for what's important for them,' and if Canada does not stand up now, it won't be in a 'strong position to advocate for what's important.'
Menzies' comments come after Trump had announced tariffs of 35 per cent on all Canadian goods outside the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement on free trade.
A statement from Premier David Eby's office says he remains focused on protecting workers and businesses in B.C. from the 'deeply harmful tariffs' imposed by Trump's administration.

Create Account In a letter dated Aug. 7 to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said Trump's intervention in the conflict helped avert 'a potentially devastating conflict' and restored peace along the two countries' shared border. He credited Trump's 'visionary and innovative diplomacy' for the breakthrough. Trump had used his favored bargaining tool of trade deals and tariffs to get Cambodia and Thailand to agree to the truce last month. The ceasefire came after five days of clashes that included airstrikes and artillery shelling, which left dozens dead and displaced over 300,000 people along the roughly 800-kilometre (500-mile) border. The U.S. president has repeatedly said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in mediating conflicts, including between Pakistan and India and Iran and Israel. Pakistan also nominated Trump for the prize, although India has consistently said Trump played no role in securing the truce. Recipients of the peace prize typically don't lobby for the award. The census is used to determine how many members of Congress are elected from each state, and the Pew Research Center estimates that ignoring unauthorized migrants in 2020 would have deprived California, Florida and Texas of one House seat each. It is also used for apportioning votes in the state-by-state 'electoral college' that decides presidential elections and for allocating trillions of dollars in federal funding. Trump attempted similar moves in his first term, including the addition of a citizenship question to the census, but was blocked by the Supreme Court. The court declined to rule on whether the millions of people in the country without legal status should be excluded. Trump's call for a new census comes with state-level lawmakers and officials in Texas locking horns over a new electoral map that would likely net Republicans up to five extra House seats in 2026. Threats to lawmakers More than 50 Texas Democratic lawmakers have fled to multiple Democratic states in an effort to block the passage of the proposed blueprint during a special legislative session. In Indiana, Braun said any redistricting conversation would be 'exploratory,' as the state's maps were drawn fairly in 2021, Indianapolis public broadcaster WFYI reported. 'We tried to adhere to township lines and the configurations don't look like an octopus,' Braun said, according to the TV and radio network. Democrats have vowed to retaliate with their own proposals, possibly in New York and California, the country's largest states. Texas legislators were evacuated from their suburban Chicago hotel on Wednesday morning following an unspecified threat. State representative John Bucy told NBC News the group had spent two hours outside the building but had not been diverted from pursuing their 'fight for voting rights.'
