UN refugee chief warns of rising migration from Libya amid funding crisis
In comments to the Financial Times, Grandi said that Sudanese refugees are already moving from Chad into Libya — one of the key transit routes towards Europe. He stressed the urgent need to boost support for host countries to help displaced populations remain in place, which could ease growing pressures on migration corridors.
Grandi noted increasing signs that thousands of Sudanese refugees are heading north toward Libya and onward to Europe, instead of staying in Sudan or neighbouring countries such as Chad.
He described the current budget cuts affecting UNHCR as 'catastrophic,' warning that the lack of resources is pushing thousands of migrants toward Europe. Grandi urged European capitals to fund existing refugee reception systems in Africa rather than investing in new migration control frameworks.
He added that donor-imposed budget reductions are seriously undermining the agency's ability to manage migration flows, calling the international community's neglect of the situation in African nations 'a grave strategic mistake.' Tags: UNHCR
