Indian Railways to raise ticket prices for passenger trains from July 1
Suburban train travel and second-class travel for up to 500 km have been spared from any fare hike. However, 0.5 paise per kilometre hike will be implemented for distances more than 500 km
New Delhi
Indian Railways is set to increase ticket prices for passenger trains starting July 1, The Times of India reported, citing sources. Fares for non-AC mail and express trains will rise by 1 paisa per kilometre, while AC classes will see a 2 paise per kilometre increase, according to the news report.
This will be the first hike in passenger train fares since 2020.
Meanwhile, suburban train travel and second-class travel for up to 500 kilometre have been spared from any fare hike. However, 0.5 paise per kilometre hike will be implemented for distances more than 500 kilometres, the report added.
This comes after the Railway Ministry earlier this month announced that Aadhaar authentication will become mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets online via the IRCTC website and mobile app starting July 1. From July 15, Aadhaar-based OTP verification will also be extended to Tatkal tickets booked at reservation counters and through authorised agents.
'Tatkal tickets shall be available for booking through computerised PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters of Indian Railways/authorised agents only after authentication of a system-generated OTP, which shall be sent through the system on the mobile number furnished by the users at the time of booking. This shall also be implemented by 15/07/2025,' the ministry said.
The ministry said that the new authentication measures aim to curb misuse and ensure that Tatkal ticketing benefits genuine passengers. As part of this, authorised agents will also be restricted from booking Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window—between 10 am and 10.30 am for AC classes, and 11 am to 11.30 am for non-AC classes.

Train Tickets To Cost More From July 1, 2025: Check Out Latest Railway Fare Hike
Last Updated: A senior railway official said around 13,000 daily non-AC mail and express trains will see a fare hike, while AC class fares will rise by 2 paisa per kilometre from July 1 In a significant move, Indian Railways is set to hike passenger train fares for the first time in several years, with the revised rates coming into effect from July 1. As per reports, passengers travelling on non-AC mail and express trains will see a fare increase of 1 paisa per kilometre. A senior railway official said on Tuesday that around 13,000 daily non-AC mail and express trains across the country would see a marginal hike in ticket prices. For AC class passengers, the fare increase will be 2 paisa per kilometre. The railway official assured that the new fare structure would not significantly impact passengers' budgets. Suburban train fares and Monthly Season Ticket (MST) prices will remain unchanged, providing relief to daily commuters travelling to and from work. Additionally, there will be no fare increase for passengers travelling up to 500 km in ordinary second class. However, for journeys exceeding 500 km in general second class, the fare will rise by only half a paisa per kilometre. For example, a 600 km journey would see an increase of just 50 paise, which is considered very nominal. Earlier in June 2025, Indian Railways announced an important change. Starting July 1, 2025, Aadhaar authentication will be mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets. The Railway Ministry issued a directive on June 10, 2025, stating that this measure aims to ensure the Tatkal scheme benefits reach the general public and prevent misuse by agents. Additionally, from July 15, 2025, an extra layer of security will be added—passengers will be required to complete OTP verification based on Aadhaar. An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number during booking, which must be entered to proceed. First Published: June 24, 2025, 15:23 IST

India to roll out incentive scheme for rare earth production 15-20 days
With the rare earth material supply crisis looming large, the government is set to launch an incentive programme to encourage domestic production of these minerals. The government will roll out a scheme to subsidise domestic production of rare earth magnets in 15-20 days, Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy said on Tuesday. The minister said that consultation with stakeholders is underway to decide the amount of the incentive programme. According to ministry officials, if the total incentive crosses Rs 1,000 crore, the scheme will be sent to the Union cabinet for approval. The latest crisis emanates from stricter controls imposed by China on the export of seven rare earth elements and finished magnets. This revised framework demands detailed end-use disclosures and client declarations, including confirmation that products will not be used in defense or re-exported to the US. This added scrutiny has prolonged the clearance process to at least 45 days, leading to significant delays and a growing backlog that is tightening global supply chains. China is the world's dominant exporter of rare earth magnets, controlling over 70% of global Rare Earth Element (REE) production and over 90% of refining capacity. Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said India is looking at alternative sources for procurement of rare earth minerals in the interim period, including Japan and Vietnam. He informed that one Hyderabad-based company has promised to deliver 500 tonnes by this year-end. The secretary said the actual production of rare earth magnets will take about two years, and the government, along with the industry, is looking at alternative sources of procurement in the interim period, including Japan and Vietnam. Rare earth magent, an alloy rare earth metal, are integral to Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), which are widely used in electric vehicles (EVs) for their high torque, energy efficiency, and compact size. Hybrid vehicles also rely on them for efficient propulsion. In Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles, their use is primarily limited to electric power steering and other motorized systems. Elements like Dysprosium (Dy), Terbium (Tb), Neodymium (Nd), and Praseodymium (Pr) are crucial for these magnets, especially in high-performance applications. Meanwhile, ministry officials said that said 30 automotive firms have sought authorisation from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to import rare earth magnets from China a fortnight ago, so that production is not impacted negatively due to the shortage.

Hindalco to acquire US-based AluChem for $125 mn
Hindalco Industries Limited, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, has announced the acquisition of a 100% equity stake in US-based AluChem Companies, Inc., a prominent manufacturer of Specialty Alumina, for an enterprise value of $125 million (around Rs 1,050 crore), the company said in a statement. The acquisition will be carried out through Aditya Holdings LLC, a stepdown wholly owned subsidiary of Hindalco. 'This strategic acquisition marks a significant investment in specialty alumina, a key step in scaling its high-value, technology-led materials portfolio,' the company said on Tuesday. The transaction is expected to close in the upcoming quarter, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. The company said that Hindalco's Specialty Alumina business, a key pillar of its value-added strategy, has delivered consistent double-digit growth in recent years and emerged as a high-growth, high-margin vertical within the company's portfolio. As specialty alumina finds newer applications across cutting-edge sectors such as electric mobility, semiconductors, and precision ceramics, this acquisition, according to the company, propels Hindalco up the innovation curve -- enabling access to next-generation alumina applications and driving value-accretive growth.
