Ebotse resident swims, cycles and runs to victory at Ironman SA

Upon retirement, most people opt for a laid-back lifestyle to relax after years of hard work. Not Ebotse Golf and Country Estate resident Alan Charles Robertson.
Instead, the 65-year-old former biathlete, modern pentathlete and longtime Denel employee decided to speed up, work hard and push his body to the limits.
Victory on debut
Robertson recently clinched first place in the men's 65-69 category at the Isuzu Ironman Nelson Mandela Bay Championships in March.
He completed the 3.8km swim in 01:35:49, before cycling the 180km distance in 07:56:35. He then completed the marathon in 05:23:12, clocking a combined 15:21:22 for victory.
'I didn't go and break myself because 15 hours is a long time. I knew I was going to go for 15 hours. I went out to finish and just went out with constant speed in each of the events,' he said.
It was his first full triathlon and it was made special by the fact that he did it with his son-in-law, Nathan Pearson beside him, while their family was on the route supporting them.
'I've been fortunate that at 65 years, I don't take one tablet. That's quite good when a lot of your friends have passed away. I can still do the Ironman and I'm blessed to have Nathan as my partner. That's what counts – doing it with your whole family.'
Early career
Robertson took up endurance sports early in his life. He's a former national U17 and U19 biathlon record holder, setting the milestones in 1977 and 1979.
He took up triathlon in 1980 and won the national champs in 1981. He then joined the army and was introduced to modern pentathlon. He was a Springbok for over 11 years. His career highlight was second place in the American national championships in 1981.
Afterwards, Robertson transitioned into karate. He opened the Goju Karate Academy and was president for 25 years.
He still participated in the triathlon, doing several Olympic-distance triathlons with his children, Warren and Claire.
Family affair
After Claire married Pearson, it wasn't long before Pearson and Robertson developed an unbreakable bond that culminated in the duo frequenting the Ironman 70.3 competitions around the country for the past four years.
'We trained together with his son, Warren, for our first triathlon in 2021. Alan had just retired and because I own my own business, it was a natural transition for us,' Pearson said.
While he was a strong cyclist, learning to swim took serious work but his father-in-law was right beside him to give him lessons.
'I was only strong in cycling. Because Alan had a background in swimming, he coached us. He knew how to train. That knowledge was like a parenting relationship you can't pay for.'
Pearson did his first full Ironman last year and he was on hand to see Robertson cross the line in Gqeberha. They swam together and came out of the water in tow but afterwards, it was every man for himself.
'This has become our bread and butter. I was excited for Alan when he came first because I knew he wanted the podium,' Pearson said.
The duo will continue to swim, cycle and run together and are looking forward to the SEESA Jozi Triathlon at CR Swart Dam in September.

Salmaan Moerat set to miss Springboks' matches as Western Province sweat over Zain Davids

While Western Province are still sweating over the fitness of captain and flanker Zain Davids ahead of their match against the Cheetahs, it also looks like they will be without Springbok Salmaan Moerat for the remainder of the Currie Cup. On Monday, Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus revealed that Moerat was set to make his first appearance for Western Province in the Currie Cup this weekend in Bloemfontein. However, the Bok lock suffered a knee injury at training and is now doubtful for the rest of Province's domestic campaign, as well as the Springboks' Rugby Championship matches. Moerat is one of a handful of Springboks outside the current squad who were sent back to their unions to get some game time in the Currie Cup. But Erasmus let slip that Moerat is currently sidelined. 'We've cut the squad a little bit, but when we have meetings, we've still got guys like Jaden [Hendrikse], Faf [de Klerk], Mapiemps (Makazole Mapimpi) joining virtually. Salmaan, unfortunately, got injured last week. He would have played this week [for Western Province in the Currie Cup],' said Erasmus.

Palace claim sporting merit 'meaningless' after Europa League demotion

LONDON - Premier League side Crystal Palace said on Tuesday that sporting merit had been "rendered meaningless" by UEFA's decision to demote them from the Europa League. The FA Cup winners have been forced to play in this season's Conference League after European football's governing body UEFA ruled in July that American businessman John Textor had control or influence at both Palace and French club Lyon. Palace tried to have the punishment overturned, but on Monday the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport announced the Premier League club had lost their appeal. Nottingham Forest are set to take Palace's spot in the Europa League. Palace chairman Steve Parish had already been vocal in his criticism after the initial demotion and, with their fate sealed, the south London club again blasted the decision. "At a time when we should be celebrating our victory in the Community Shield at Wembley, the decision by UEFA and followed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport shows that sporting merit is rendered meaningless," Palace said in a statement. "When we won the FA Cup against Manchester City on that momentous day in May, our manager and players earned the right to play Europa League football. "We have been denied that opportunity. It appears that certain clubs, organisations and individuals have a unique privilege and power. "This growing and unhealthy influence has shattered the hopes and dreams of Crystal Palace supporters, and does not bode well for aspirational teams all over Europe competing to progress when rules and sanctions are unevenly applied in the most flagrant way." UEFA regulations state that where one or more clubs are found to have shared ownership, they cannot play in the same competition, and Lyon held on to the Europa League spot by virtue of their higher league position. Palace missed a 1 March UEFA deadline for team in multi-club groups to change their ownership structure. Textor has since sold his shares to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, a takeover completed in late July. "Multi-club structures hide behind the charade of a 'blind trust' while clubs such as ours, who have no connection to another club whatsoever, are prevented from playing in the same competition," the Palace statement added. "To compound the injustice, clubs that appear to have huge informal arrangements with each other are also allowed to participate and even possibly play against each other. Palace added that the process was "designed to severely restrict and, in our case, make it almost impossible to receive a fair hearing".

Springboks: Plans revealed for Libbok, Pollard and SFM

The Springbok coaches have made it clear that they will not stop their policy of rotation at flyhalf, and for this Saturday's Test against the Wallabies, Manie Libbok has been handed the No 10 jersey, while Damian Willemse will provide cover. Historically, the role of the flyhalf general has held such importance that very few coaches have rotated or experimented in this position, but Rassie Erasmus has insisted there is no first-choice flyhalf in the Springbok squad. This week Erasmus also confirmed that Handre Pollard and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu are likely to come back into the team squad for the second Test in Cape Town. 'Sacha and Handre will probably play in Cape Town, so we are just trying to spread the load a bit there,' Erasmus said 'We know Damian can play flyhalf, so we feel we are well covered there (this weekend),' Erasmus added. 'We've found that in the past, the only time we swap a flyhalf is when he is having an off day or when he is missing goal kicks. 'Manie has been slotting them well. The new balls are making a difference; he is doing well. Earlier this year, Erasmus also explained why they felt chopping and changing at flyhalf was not an issue, but rather a positive. 'Everything depends on who our opposition is on the day and what our plan is. I like to believe it gives us options,' said Erasmus. 'By not having a first-choice flyhalf, it makes it more difficult for opposing teams to analyse us and makes us less predictable. 'Who we choose depends on who we play and whether we go with a 5-3, 6-2 or 7-1 split on the bench. With a 6-2 bench, guys like Damian Willemse or Sacha could work nicely.'
