Another hot day before a few afternoon showers/storms. Highs will return to the mid 90s today. First Alert Chief Meteorologist Mike Buresh is tracking a few afternoon showers after 2-3 pm in SE Georgia and 3-5 pm in NE Florida. Everyone won't seen rain today, but a few locally heavy downpours are likely with some gusty winds of 40+ mph. A cool front will pass this evening ushering in some drier air. Afternoon highs get knocked down just a bit to near 90 degrees on Thursday. This weekend will be seasonably hot and mainly dry.

Jacksonville City Council Member Joe Carlucci says FDOT will conduct a study on a stretch of Baymeadows Road where a local father and his baby died after a collision. Mitchell Patch and his son Everett were hit while trying to cross Baymeadows in front of Wicked Barley. There are no convenient crosswalks near the establishment. Carlucci says he's making some kind of traffic adjustment a priority. There had been eight previous crashes in front of Wicked Barley since 2023, before Friday's incident, according to JSO crash data.
Investigators believe they have found the source of the fire at Jacksonville International Airport. The Jacksonville Aviation Authority Police Department released a report that finds the fire started in a mid-size BMW that parked in the hourly garage four hours earlier. Smoke was seen coming from beneath the front of the car, and in about a minute, the car was fully engulfed in fire. There's no word on how it started, though. The fire spread to 50 other cars.
The man chosen to run the St. Johns County school district can't wait to get going. Brennan Asplen was selected in a unanimous vote. He's currently deputy superintendent of operations. Asplen says he'll visit every school in the district to talk with teachers and administrators. He also wants to do more outreach with the community.

A few late afternoon showers/storms will develop today either side of 4:00 pm and linger into the early evening. Saturday will bring a hot day with highs in the lower to mid 90s and feels like temperatures 100-105. An isolated afternoon shower/storm is possible each day over the weekend. Three Big Things to Know: Washington holds its breath after the public fallout between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. The world's most powerful man and its wealthiest began attacking each other in a spectacle from inside the White House to social media. The feud began with Musk's criticism of Trump's legislative agenda, which would increase the deficit while eliminating tax incentives that have helped his electric automaker Tesla. Trump responded by threatening to cut government subsidies and contracts for Musk's companies, and things only escalated from there. The city of Fernandina Beach just closed its window for companies to apply to manage a possible paid parking program. The city says it needs money for local projects that would be raised through paid parking. Some people who visit the area think they should do it another way. The city says paid parking is just an idea right now — and nothing has been approved yet. There's a town hall going over the paid parking idea being held at city hall on June 24th. A 90's music festival in St. Augustine is delayed - again - leaving some long-time attendees frustrated. The latest date for the As If! 90s event, June 21st, has been canceled and organizers say they're planning to move the show to the fall. The festival says all ticket holders will be refunded no later than June 14th. Ancient City Entertainment runs both the As If! 90s event and the Palatka Blue Crab Festival, which faced criticism over high prices, fewer vendors, and a lack of a carnival last month. Florida's 'Firefighter Health and Safety' bill is now law. Governor Ron DeSantis signed the bill yesterday while speaking at the annual Convention of Florida Professional Firefighters. He says it strengthens Florida's commitment to the health and safety of firefighters by updating the state's Firefighters Occupational Safety and Health Act. It includes protections against occupational diseases and mental health challenges and introduces measures to limit firefighter work schedules to 42 hours per week, aiming to reduce burnout and fatigue.

The Wednesday edition of Jacksonville's Morning News for June 4, 2025 is tracking scattered, heavy downpours. OH NO: It's back to the drawing board for the University of Florida in the search for a new president. The state university system Board of Governors voted Tuesday to block Dr. Santa Ono from becoming the next UF president. The university's board of trustees had just unanimously approved Ono for the role last week. Critics of Ono had concerns about how he handled on campus pro-Palestinian protests when he was the president of the University of Michigan. Conservative critics were also unhappy with Ono for his support of DEI programs in previous roles. Three Big Things to Know: Florida Senate restores advanced class funding: Many local school districts were worried about a proposal to cut school bonus funding by 50% for students that pass accelerated courses like AP, IB and AICE. But Tuesday, the Florida Senate's latest proposal got rid of that, fully restoring the funding. The new plan says those dollars will be split, with districts permitted to spend 20 percent on discretionary spending, while 80 percent will go into a new fund reserved for bonuses and other incentives. Outsiders: Three finalists for the Downtown Investment Authority CEO job will be in Jacksonville on Monday for interviews. Danny Chavez, former Chief Economic Development Officer in Waco, Texas. Lara Frittz, Division Director of the Frederick County, Maryland, Department of Economic Opportunity. Colin Tarbert, formerly the President and CEO of the Baltimore Development Corp. Elon Musk has blasted President Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' of tax breaks and spending cuts as a 'disgusting abomination.' The tech billionaire's comments test his own influence over the Trump-led Republican Party. Musk targeted Trump's top congressional priority just days after the president gave him a celebratory Oval Office sendoff marking the end of Musk's role leading the Department of Government Efficiency.
