
St. Paul-to-Chicago Amtrak Borealis sidelined by corrosion
Amtrak officials issued a statement Wednesday indicating they worked with the manufacturer of the Horizon railcars and 'decided to remove the equipment from service after learning of additional areas of concern from intensive inspections of multiple cars.'
The decision impacts service on multiple Amtrak lines to varying degrees, including the Downeaster, Hiawatha, Borealis and Amtrak Cascades. Some trains, such as the Downeaster, will operate with fewer cars, while 'other services will be provided substitute transportation until a long-term plan is developed,' reads the statement.
The Borealis runs round-trips daily between Chicago and St. Paul through Milwaukee, and Hiawatha operates daily with multiple trips between Chicago and Milwaukee. On Wednesday, about half of the Hiawatha departures were replaced by chartered buses as substitute transportation, as were departures in both directions for the Borealis.
The Empire Builder service that stops in St. Paul as its travels from Seattle or Portland, Ore. to Chicago was not impacted. An Amtrak spokesperson on Wednesday said no other information was available.
After years of clamoring for a second daily round-trip from Minnesota's capital city to Chicago, the Borealis launched last May.

When Aubrie Lee and Peter Saathoff-Harshfield ride Amtrak's Coast Starlight up the California coast or the Lake Shore Limited along the Great Lakes, they seek out more than just a seat with a view. They're also on the lookout for garbage cans and suitcases blocking their spot. Ms. Lee, who has muscular dystrophy and uses a power wheelchair, often relies on Amtrak's designated wheelchair spaces to travel. Despite signs requiring those areas be kept clear, they frequently end up as repositories for luggage and trash. Mr. Saathoff-Harshfield, who has low vision and depends on screen-reading software, contends with glitches and inaccessible features when he uses Amtrak's app. The couple, who estimate that they've spent 560 hours on Amtrak together in the last three years, traveling coast-to-coast five times, said that riding the train is still much easier than flying. But the indignities they've experienced — not just trash cans and a faulty app but also incorrectly deployed boarding ramps, inaccessible dining cars and more — have left them with the sense that they must constantly advocate to receive the services they're entitled to by law. 'It makes me feel like freight,' Ms. Lee said. 'I don't feel respected as a person.' The Americans With Disabilities Act, which became law in 1990, prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities and mandates that businesses, including Amtrak, provide people with disabilities an 'equal opportunity' to use their services. Amtrak aims to be fully compliant with the A.D.A. by 2029. But a report last month from Amtrak's Office of Inspector General showed how far the railroad company still has to go. The report found that while Amtrak was making progress toward its accessibility goals, it lacked an overarching strategy to improve customer service for passengers with disabilities and did not collect or use all the data at its disposal to improve those passengers' experiences. Atlas Ocean Voyages creates junior suite category
Atlas Ocean Voyages said it is rebranding several staterooms as junior suites and introducing new amenities to distinguish and elevate their value. The staterooms transitioning into junior suites are the former Horizon, Horizon Deluxe and Veranda Deluxe accommodations. Each will now have "junior" in its name and together they will be branded as the Concierge Collection. In addition to welcome canapes and laundry service, guests in Concierge Collection rooms can access 10% savings on spa services, premium WiFi and the onboard boutique; priority access to the behind-the-scenes galley tour; and enhanced in-suite amenities. Guests in higher-tier staterooms will also access the Concierge Collection amenities. The cruise line decided to rebrand the suites and add new amenities to enhance the distinction between the midsize Concierge Collection staterooms and those with the smallest interiors: the veranda stateroom and adventure oceanview, said Jason O'Keefe, Atlas' senior director of guest experience and corporate communications. Adding amenities with the junior suites clarifies that they are a more premium option, O'Keefe said.
