India Scared Of England's Batting? Harry Brook Makes Big Claim Before 4th Test
Harry Brook believes India were 'scared' of England's chasing ability, leading them to set a 'ridiculous' target in the second Test.
England's Harry Brook believes India were 'scared' of his team's chasing ability in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which led them to set a 'ridiculous' total for the hosts.
India secured a 180-run lead in the first innings of that Test and used the significant amount of time left in the match to bat till just before Stumps on the fourth day, setting a target of 608. Some felt it was a gamble that Indian bowlers would be able to bowl England out in just over three sessions. Whereas others thought it was a well-thought-out tactic to entice Ben Stokes and Co. to go after a target they can't reach and extract mistakes.
It worked and England were out for just 271. But Brook felt it was more due to fear of them successfully chasing 372 in the first Test at Headingley, even saying that it gave them 'confidence' for the third match.
'We saw them set a ridiculous total for us at Edgbaston. They were a little bit scared of setting us a total that we could potentially get. So that played into our favour and gave us a lot of confidence as well, going into other games going forward," Brook said.
He believes that the confidence reflected in England's narrow, 22-run win at Lord's where there bowlers kept the effort up in a variety of conditions and snatched all available points.
'Chasing that total at Headingley was an unbelievable win as well. And then obviously last time, the fight and determination we showed to get that last wicket, and the skills and patience that Stokes showed as well throughout that period where we couldn't quite find a wicket, it was awesome to watch. I'm sure it kept everybody on the edge of their seat," he added.
England now lead the series 2-1 with two Tests to go. India, despite being bogged down by injuries to players like Akash Deep and Nitish Kumar Reddy, will aim to settle the score at Old Trafford when the fourth Test begins on July 23.

Mohammad Kaif says Shubman Gill ‘missed chance to earn respect' as a leader after not selecting Karun Nair for 4th Test
Former India player Mohammad Kaif said that skipper Shubman Gill had the chance to back Karun Nair and pick him for the 4th India vs England Test but by not going with the decision, he 'missed a chance to ear respect when it comes to making tough decisions as a leader.' 'Today was Shubman Gill's chance to back Karun who was down but deserved one more chance. He should have picked Karun Nair. Chance missed to earn the respect when it comes to making tough decisions as a leader,' Kaif posted on X. Nair's comeback to the Indian set up after 8 years did not yield a fairytale innings with the batter failing to convert his starts in the first three Tests against England, leading to the visitors falling 1-2 behind in the 5-match series. Today was Shubman Gill's chance to back karun who was down but deserved one more chance. He should have picked Karun Nair. Chance missed to earn the respect when it comes to making tough decisions as a leader. — Mohammad Kaif (@MohammadKaif) July 23, 2025 In 6 innings, the Vidarbha player has 131 runs at an average of 21.83 and a high score of 40 runs. In the first 3 matches he has scored 0, 20, 31, 26, 40 and 14 at a strike rate of 52.61. On Thursday, Gill elected to replace Nair with Sai Sudharsan in the India lineup against England at Manchester. There were also 2 other changes with Shardul Thakur and Anshul Kamboj coming in for the injured Akash Deep and Nitish Kumar Reddy respectively. 'I was actually confused. Good toss to lose. The way we've played in the last three Tests has been outstanding. Some crunch moments we've lost, but we've won more sessions than them. You need a bit of a break. All three Tests were intense. Looks like a good surface. Nice and hard. There's some forecast (for rain) around for the four-five days. Three changes: Sai Sudharsan comes in place of Karun. Kamboj and Shardul are in as well for Akash Deep and Reddy who are injured,' the skipper said at the toss. England also made a change with Liam Dawson replacing fellow spinner Shoaib Bashir, who suffered a hand injury in the third Test at the Lord's.

End of Karun Nair's Test career? Fans question batter's future after 4th Test drop
The fans are questioning if it is the end of the road for Karun Nair's Test career as he was dropped from the lineup for the Manchester Test on Wednesday, July 23. Karun had a fairytale return to the Indian team after more than 3000 days, as his performances on the domestic circuit caught the attention of the selectors. Karun played a pivotal role in Vidarbha's 2024–25 Ranji Trophy title, finishing as the fourth-highest run-getter of the season. He scored 863 runs from 16 innings at an average of 53.93, including four centuries and two fifties. The form continued in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, 779 runs from eight innings at a staggering average of 389.50 and a strike rate of 124.04, featuring five hundreds and a fifty. He even impressed during the India A vs England Lions matches, scoring a double hundred in the first unofficial Test. advertisementENG vs IND, Manchester Test Updates However, the return to the Indian team hasn't been the best as he scored just 131 runs in six innings with an average just above 21. While there have been flashes of brilliance, Karun struggled to convert his starts into big scores, which something pundits and fans pointed out. The Indian team supporters were sympathetic towards the 33-year-old as many felt that this was the end of his Test career. Karun dropped despite Shubman Gill's backingThe interesting thing about Karun getting dropped was that he was publicly backed by India captain Shubman Gill just on the eve of the Manchester Test. Gill said that the 33-year-old had been batting well and they were hoping that he would turn things around soon. "Yes, we have had conversations with him, but we think he is batting well. We think Karun is betting well. The first match he didn't really play at this number. It's difficult when a player is making a comeback in a series like this. But I don't think there's been any issue with batting. He's been batting well. Sometimes it's also about getting that click. Once you're able to make your fifty, then you're able to get back into your zone and uh get some big runs. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened for him so far, but, we are hopeful that he will be able to turn around," said Gill at the press weren't happy with this and questioned why the team management go out and support players on the eve of the match and then drop them from the lineup. Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif was unhappy with Gill's decision not to back Karun for one more game and said the skipper missed a chance to gain respect. India replaced Karun in the lineup with Sai Sudharsan as they made a total of three changes to the lineup for the Manchester Test. - EndsMust Watch
