Iconic moments that definitely scored David Beckham his knighthood
After years of grafting and being the poster boy for all things patriotic and pro-monarchy, David Beckham has finally earned the prestigious honour of a knighthood.
While some British celebrities have declined honours or have been non-committal when it comes to praising the controversial royal family, the former England captain has been flying the flag, supporting King Charles and the crown-wearing gang since, it seems, birth.
'Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour,' he said in a statement to PA when the news was announced.
He added that he was 'immensely proud' of the honour, and was 'grateful' for the recognition of his career.
'I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do, and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. It will take a little while for the news to sink in, but I'm immensely proud, and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.'
On the pitch, David has been a living legend for most of his life, earning an OBE in 2003. Off the pitch, he's been an important advocate for charitable causes.
He's been a Goodwill Ambassador for Unicef since 2005, a founding member of Malaria No More, and an ambassador for the King's Foundation, which supports education.
Undoubtedly, these are the real accolades that cemented Beckham's knighthood.
However, we think there are a few iconic moments from over the years that deserve a special mention and may have encouraged ol' Charlie boy to finally give our Becks the recognition he's been craving.

In an interview about the Prince's Trust Charity, which David has worked with for several years, the footballer discussed his love of the royal family, tearing up and wiping his eyes as he spoke about being a 'royalist'.
'I always get emotional talking about anything that I do with our royal family,' he said.
'I've always been a huge royalist,' he added, explaining that he grew up in a family that loved and admired the monarchy and 'everything that came with the royal family.'
He then commented, rather bafflingly, that he is an important part of the royal family, which made his mother extremely proud.
'She's so proud of obviously what I've done throughout my career, but she's also proud that I've played such an important role within the royal family and the charities they have.'
Now, doesn't that kind of public devotion deserve a knighthood?
Victoria Beckham revealed in 2008 in an interview with Parky (Michael Parkinson) that she called her husband Golden Balls. Unfortunately for David, the nickname stuck.
She joked that people thought she was a 'miserable cow in high heels who just goes down Bond Street all the time – not that there's anything wrong with that,' and that her husband's reputation was tinged after the 1998 World Cup.
The 1998 incident saw Becks royally ruin England's chances of winning when he was sent off for kicking an Argentinian footballer. Despite being public enemy number one in the UK for a spell, he managed to win back the affection of the nation.
'I call him Golden Balls,' said Victoria, joking about his golden boy status.
'That's one of those things I shouldn't have said,' she said immediately afterwards as David looked embarrassed and held his head in his hands.
With a golden reputation and apparently balls of gold as opposed to steel, who wouldn't want to see a Sir Golden Balls?
In September 2022, the former professional footballer looked visibly emotional as he waited in line in the queue, appearing to wipe tears from his eyes as he waited his turn to bow his head to the late monarch.
Beckham, 47, joined members of the public in the queue in the early hours of the morning, wearing a flatcap with a dark blazer and tie, a white shirt and a navy coat.
Fans loved that he got into the gargantuan queue in the wee hours and queued with all of us commoners, chatting and mingling with the people around him, and not expecting to queue jump just because of his A-list status.

The footballer's Netflix docuseries, Beckham, released in 2023, contained one of the best TV moments of the year, which was so good it was even nominated for a Bafta.
'We'd both come from families that worked really hard. Both of our parents worked really hard. We were very working-class,' said Victoria Beckham to the camera.
Unfortunately, the conversation was overheard by David, who immediately cut in to reveal that his wife was telling a little porkie.
'Be honest,' he said. 'What car did your dad drive you to school in?'
After a bit of back and forth, Posh confessed that her father had a Rolls-Royce in the 80s, perhaps suggesting she wasn't quite as working class as she believed.
The moment went viral and showed off the couple's cheeky relationship – and Beck's firm belief that honesty is the best policy.
Sounds like something noble that a knight might believe…
Never one to pass up a celebration, Becks has been in attendance at what seems like every event a royal has invited him to.
Whether it's a wedding, a sports game, a charitable endeavour, or any other kind of event, Becks has been happy to add his celebrity status to bolster any event hosted by a royal.
If you're going to represent the monarch, you're going to want to be a style icon, and nothing proved Beck's fashion game like sarong-gate.
During the 1998 World Cup in France, David found himself at the centre of a completely baffling news story when viewed through a modern lens.
David was photographed by The Sun, wearing a sarong over his trousers whilst walking with his then fiancée Victoria Beckham.
The photos caused a huge stir and the footballer found himself being ridiculed by the British public, with The Sun opting for the headline: 'Beckham has got his Posh frock on.' More Trending
In a 2014 interview, he told Lorraine Kelly: 'Sarongs are great.
'That's one thing I never regret because I thought it looked great and I would still wear it now.'
A trendsetter and a feminist? Sounds deserving of a knighthood!

Emma Raducanu is managing back issues after bowing out of Queen's
Newly reinstated British no.1 Emma Raducanu saw her Queen's run come to an end in a straight sets defeat to Qinwen Zheng. The 22-year-old produced a brilliant start to her second set as the Olympic champion and top seed from China ran into several issues, but was unable to make it count and missed out on a spot in the LTA's HSBC Championship semi-finals with a 6-2 6-4 loss. Raducanu had faced several back issues coming into the WTA 500 event and was forced to call the physio after her first set in the quarterfinal but noted that she was not overly concerned by the returned flare up. "I have been managing it pretty well over the last few weeks, but I guess as the week goes on it just tests it out and I just felt it," she said. "They took me off court and taped it to give me some extra stability, and some painkillers. "I have had back issues before. I think it's just a vulnerability of mine and I know I need to take good care of it. 'I'm in awe of her, to feel that love for the game is really precious' 🥹❤️ When Joanie met, played with and inspired her hero @EmmaRaducanu — LTA (@the_LTA) June 13, 2025 "I'm not overly concerned that it's something serious, but I know it's something that's very annoying and needs proper and careful management." Zheng was the commander of play during the opening set but Raducanu continued to push her opponent in each of her service games, as both players threatened to break throughout. The top left corner seemed to be Zheng's weak spot and Raducanu learnt that early on, consistently winning points in that area whilst employing her backhand slice to come from three break points down and win her service game. Zheng fell into a bit of an issue with her shoes, having not played on grass much before and needing to manage a change of shoe half way through the first set. The break in play looked like it had all turned out well for Raducanu who managed to bounce back to level the game, but it eventually turned into the break Zheng needed. With the Brit's return slipping, Zheng took flight and found her rhythm to break once more and take the set. "Returning is one of my big strengths, and I think Qinwen served really well," she said. "I didn't see many second serves and she hit her spots really well in some big moments. "Credit to her. She kind of took away one of my bigger strengths. "I think I have a lot of work to do, to be honest." Raducanu came out in the second set and immediately broke Zheng, courtesy of some well placed shots down the tramline. With several racket issues seeping into Zheng's play and as Raducanu went two breaks up in the second set, the world no.5 began to panic on the other side of the court and was evidently struggling to find the same accuracy and power she had in her first set. But the zing of Zheng's serve returned as quickly as it had left, and the bleak patch soon subsided as the Olympic champion began to turn around her second set and level the game. The Brit had one last chance to save her semi-final hopes, serving to halt Zheng's chance at going through, but double faults and nerves once again seeped through and although the British no.1 was able to come from three match points down, ultimately bowed out of Queen's. The worried star, who has been battling pneumonia, has since beefed up security with 24-hour guard dog patrols. Family and friends have kept her company. A source told The Sun on Sunday: 'Gemma was left shaken and very scared for her safety after she received a threatening and abusive letter from a man expressing his extreme dislike for her and using menacing language. 'It was really nasty and made reference to tracking her down, so she called the police straight away. 'It was alarming that this man knew her home address, but she already upped security and has round-the-clock guard dogs and has cameras onsite. 'She is always incredibly friendly with all her fans and happy to stop for pictures and a chat so to have someone send such an unpleasant letter has really shocked her. 'She was very grateful to the police, who are taking it very seriously and have given her practical advice on how to handle herself. It is an ongoing investigation. 'She thought about what had happened to Holly Willoughby and her kidnap threat ordeal so didn't want to take any chances. 'Police are confident they are going to track down the culprit.' Gemma, who lives with businessman fiancé Rami Hawash, told a podcast in May how she has had multiple stalkers over the years. They had threatened to kill her and sent 'terrifying' letters to her boutique in Brentwood. I'd get all sorts at the shop. Weird. 'People are weird. And that's why in a way I came away from my shop in the end.' In 2019 The Sun revealed she had called in police over fears she was being hounded by a stalker. Gemma claimed she had seen a man who previously verbally abused her outside her home over six days. But I'm off them now and the sickness is kicking back in. 'It's so frustrating because I normally have so much energy and I'm always loving life. But now I get really breathless really quickly and I feel like I'm dying.' King remembers victims of Air India plane disaster at Trooping the Colour
Trooping the Colour was a display of military pomp and pageantry but Charles asked for the traditional programme to include a minute's silence, and for senior royals and officers taking part to wear black armbands as a mark of respect. When the royal family gathered later on Buckingham Palace's balcony they acknowledged the crowds and watched an aerial display of vintage and modern aircraft with the Red Arrows' finale powered by a blend of sustainable aviation fuel. The world-famous aerobatic team also used vegetable oil to produce their trademark red, white and blue vapour trails over the royal residence – believed to be a first. Trooping, also known as the King's Birthday Parade, fell silent after Charles had inspected hundreds of troops on Whitehall's Horse Guards Parade from a carriage with the Queen by his side. The moment of reflection acknowledged the aviation disaster on Thursday that killed 241 passengers and crew, including more than 50 British nationals, and around 30 people on the ground. Charles led the royal colonels in wearing black armbands, with the Prince of Wales, Colonel of the Welsh Guards, Princess Royal, Colonel Blues and Royals, and the Duke of Edinburgh, Colonel Scots Guards, all wearing bands on their left arms. Young royals delighted monarchy fans by making an appearance, with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis riding in a carriage with their mother Kate. George, Charlotte and Louis joined other members of the royal family, including the Duchess of Edinburgh in the former office of the Duke of Wellington, to watch the spectacle in honour of their grandfather the King. Kate took her place next to the King and Queen on the dais, in her role as Colonel of the Irish Guards – a symbolic position and one she was unable to take up last year because she was receiving cancer treatment, and instead watched the ceremony with her children. Trooping the Colour is as much a social occasion as a ceremonial celebration, and stands around Horse Guards Parade were filled with around 8,000 wives, girlfriends and parents of the guardsmen and officers on parade. The colour – or regimental flag – being trooped this year was the King's Colour of Number 7 Company, Coldstream Guards, also known as the sovereign's bodyguard, which is celebrating its 375th anniversary. The minute's silence was observed when Charles and Camilla returned to the dais, following an announcement to the spectators and a bugler sounding the Last Post. During the pageantry, the colour was first trooped through the ranks of soldiers before the guardsmen marched past the King, first in slow then in quick time, with Charles acknowledging the command of 'eyes right' with a salute. Lieutenant Max Martin, 24, who carried the regimental flag at the heart of the ceremony, said: 'The King's Colour emphasises and symbolises everything that has ever gone before in the Coldstream Guards. 'The gold embroidered silk of the flag is physically heavy, especially in the flourish, but the symbolic weight is heavier still. 'It bears 44 of our 113 battle honours: the achievements and sacrifices of countless generations of our forebears.' Thousands lined the royal procession route from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade where Trooping was staged. A group of activists from the anti-monarchy group Republic staged a 'not my King' protest. During the fly-past Louis, who was dressed in an identical red tie and suit outfit as older brother George, was seen chatting to his father, William, and waving to the crowds. The sustainable display be the Red Arrows is in keeping with Charles decades long support for sustainability and climate action. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the King was not involved in the decision but was 'delighted' because he has been encouraging use of the fuel on royal flights where practical and hopes the example will lead to wider use across the aviation sector.
