ECoS strengthens efforts to increase energy generation capacity in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU (May 27): The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) has conducted comprehensive monitoring and evaluation of key energy projects in Sabah, aligning with its efforts to strengthen the electricity supply system in Sabah.
Its chief executive officer, Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid, accompanied by delegations from ECoS and Sabah Electricity, visited several existing power stations and energy development project sites located at the west coast of Sabah.
Locations visited included the SPR Energy Power Plant, Kimanis Power Plant, Sabah Oil & Gas Terminal (SOGT), Tenom Pangi Hydro Station, and two new project sites in Kimanis.
The purpose of these visits was to assess project progress, ensure compliance with safety and technical standards, and evaluate the operational efficiency of existing power plants that play a crucial role in the stability of Sabah's electricity supply.
'This close monitoring is vital to ensure all projects are on schedule and can increase generation capacity. Both of these new projects will contribute 200MW of energy to the grid upon completion,' said Nasser.
He also emphasized that these efforts are part of the Sabah State Government's commitment to address electricity supply issues and strengthen the state's energy sector holistically, in line with the goals outlined in the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040).
'ECoS is committed to ensuring that every energy project in Sabah is developed and managed efficiently, safely, and sustainably. Close cooperation among government agencies, GLC companies, and industry players is key to the successful implementation of these projects,' he added.

Sabah Electricity appoints Saadiah as new chairman
Saadiah KOTA KINABALU (Aug 3): Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (Sabah Electricity) has announced the appointment of Saadiah Aziz as its chairman. She succeeds Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau effectively from July 31. Saadiah, 49, formerly a Senior Vice President of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, brings with her more than 24 years working experiences ranging from programme and project management, stakeholder's engagement and management, business development and marketing, management and monitoring, data management, research and analysis in offshore capital market and bond rating across industries and sectors. Saadiah was notably part of the early members of the 10-year (2005-2015) Government Linked Companies (GLCs) Transformation Programme, a national priority that aimed at transforming GLCs into high-performing entities and as well as various national-level projects during her more than 16 years tenure in Khazanah Nasional Berhad. Before that she also served in the capital market domain in Labuan Offshore Financial Service Authority and Malaysian Ratings Corporation Berhad. She holds a Master Degree in Science, Strategic Management of Projects from University College London (UCL) where she was awarded British Chevening Scholarship & Khazanah Global Scholarship and Master in Science, Financial Management and a Bachelor Degree in Accounting both from Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland. She also completed the Executive Programme in London Business School on Executing Strategy for Results. Prior to her appointment, Saadiah was an Independent Director of Suria Strategic Resources Sdn Bhd, an energy related infrastructure company which is a 100% owned entity of the Malaysia Ministry of Finance Inc. Sabah Electricity's board of directors, management team and staff welcome the appointment of Saadiah. [UPDATED] Unity government delivers more to Sabah, says Anwar
KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the unity government has provided Sabah with more infrastructure, funding and recognition of its rights than previous administrations. "As compared to 2025 under the previous administration between 2021 and 2022, we have increased the allocation for Sabah to RM16 billion. That is no small amount. "In 2022, the special grant stood at RM125.6 million. Now that we are in power, we have increased it by RM600 million," he said during the closing ceremony of the three-day National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen event at the Sabah International Convention Centre here. Anwar also said that the 350-kilometre Pan Borneo Highway Phase 1B has already been tendered under the Unity Government. As for electricity, which was previously fully under the federal government, it has now been handed over to the Sabah government, including continued subsidies for seven years until 2030, with RM3.54 billion allocated to support utility company Sabah Electricity in the state. "Because of the spirit of MA63 (Malaysia Agreement 1963), there are matters that can be handled by the state government. Any project below RM50 million is handed to Sabah's Public Works Department (JKR)." In 2023, the federal government allocated RM300 million to address water supply issues. An upcoming Sabah Heart Centre at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital is also in the pipeline. He said politicians should focus on delivering results while in office, rather than criticising those in power only after leaving their posts. "Anyone can gather thousands of people; those with money can assemble a crowd. "But what matters is whether we can foster understanding, uplift dignity, and ensure that these gatherings bring meaningful change and improve livelihoods or are we merely stoking anger and hatred without achieving any real outcomes? "That's why we say in the world of politics, administration, and the economy, we must focus. We can talk at length, but if we don't focus on the task at hand, we cannot deliver results. And when we demonstrate our capability, we can achieve things previously thought impossible." Present at the event were Agriculture and Food Security minister Datuk Mohamad Sabu and his deputy Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup. Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, deputy chief minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, state finance minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun and state secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong.
