FLORIAN WIRTZ has told Bayern Munich he is joining Liverpool, according to reports.
The German is one of the hottest properties on the transfer market this summer.

But according to football journalist, Sacha Tavolieri, Wirtz is now just one step away from joining the Anfield outfit.
Mere days ago it was revealed that Manchester City had pulled of the race to sign the Bayer Leverkusen ace over concerns about the overall cost of the deal potentially reaching a figure of £252million.
However, numbers involved in the deal have not deterred German champions Bayern Munich or English champions Liverpool.

Photo: Mike Egerton/PA There can only be two possible conclusions to draw from Manchester City's huge transfer spending since the turn of the year. The football world has been waiting to find out what is going to happen with the 115 charges of financial irregularity they face, and the Premier League will have a lot to answer for if they can't prove they are guilty. When this long charge sheet was announced in February 2023, the feeling was that City were in big trouble and may even get thrown out of the Premier League. They could have titles stripped from the years when they were breaking financial rules, and it felt like they were finally going to be stopped in their tracks after years of appearing to manipulate the system. More than two years later and the story has not reached a conclusion. The Premier League case appears to be stuck in legal red tape. Most of us suspect City have been bending a few rules to effectively take over English football and win trophy after trophy, but it's up to the Premier League's legal chiefs to prove it – and that appears to be a problem. I can't believe it has taken this long to come up with a verdict and City's huge spending in the transfer market since the start of 2025 leads me to suspect they know what is likely to happen. Either they are making pre-emptive moves to sign players in case they are hit with a transfer embargo or they know they are going to be found not guilty and are planning a new era of domination. Nottingham Forest and Everton were docked points for breaking the Premier League's financial rules, but City's charges were far more serious, and that fuelled the rumours that their punishment could be huge. I'd imagine Pep Guardiola would not have signed his new contract with the club last November if he thought they were going to get hammered with a points deduction or a transfer embargo. Clearly, he was also promised that City would find a way to spend huge sums in the transfer market to rebuild his ageing team. They are looking to bounce back after a season that saw them finish well off the pace set by Liverpool at the top of the table. And, of course, they also lost the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace. Photo:Signing defender Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves and midfielders Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan and Rayan Cherki from Lyon have taken their spending to around £120m and we have not even got through two weeks of this summer's transfer window. Throw in the huge outlay of over £200m to sign Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and striker Omar Marmoush in the January window and City have gone a long way to rebuilding their team in just six months. They needed freshening up after a difficult season, but this is a huge spending spree even by their standards, and there is a degree of arrogance in the way they have gone about it. It's almost as if City are sending a message to Premier League chiefs that they can do what they want, present accounts that comply with the rules and they can't be touched ... and they might well be right. If they are found not guilty in their battle with the Premier League over those 115 charges, it will encourage them to believe they can get away with anything from this point forward. This would be bad news for football fans who like to see genuine competition. I know I'm biased as a Liverpool man, but last season was far more interesting because we had unexpected winners in all the competitions and City were not just cleaning up like they usually do. The Premier League prides itself on being the most competitive in world football, but the last few years have threatened to end that image when City took over. It was in danger of getting boring. You look at Paris Saint-Germain spending more money than any other team in France and winning the league by Christmas every year. To be honest, were in danger of getting into that territory too with City in England. It got to the point that people were fed up with them winning everything and it was refreshing to see Liverpool, Newcastle and Palace lift the big trophies in England this year. Guardiola and the City owners are clearly not happy after getting knocked off their perch and have reverted to the only plan they know to crush their opponents again. That means spend, spend and spend again – and if they get their way, the trophies will start rolling in again with their rebuilt team next season. Photo:First of all, I expect Liverpool to be stronger next season and the signing of Florian Wirtz is a major statement of intent. Liverpool spent a club record £116m on Friday to get him from Bayer Leverkusen and I can't wait to see him in red. You might say I'm hypocritical to question City's spending when Liverpool are smashing their transfer record to recruit Wirtz, but you can't compare the net spend of these two clubs over the last decade. I also expect Arsenal to be stronger next season and Chelsea are starting to find a balance after their crazy spending in the transfer market left us all questioning how they were complying with the financial rules. The quality of teams in the mid-table positions in the Premier League will also ensure the days of clubs getting more than 90 points every year are over for now. I also think that City's lavish spending can no longer guarantee their success. Chelsea couldn't find a winning formula when they spent fortunes on players over the last couple of years and I also feel clubs have worked out how to dilute City's threat and find ways to hurt them. Their fear factor has gone and until they get that back, they will not be the force they were when they were dominating English football. Photo: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile Ireland, thankfully, a bit easier on the eyes these days We could probably all have done without watching Ireland play out a 0-0 draw in Luxembourg on Tuesday night, but we have to look back at the two matches this month as signs that the team are building towards the World Cup qualifiers later this year. The 1-1 draw with Senegal in Dublin a week last Friday looks like a decent result now after the African nation went out and deservedly beat England 3-1 a few days later at the City Ground. We are now seeing an Ireland team using a game plan that has the potential to work. Heimir Hallgrimsson has some decent players to work with, but he doesn't have any world-beaters who are going to transform a game with a moment of magic. So he needs to come up with a plan that ensures we are tight at the back and then hope we make the most of the chances we get from set-pieces or on a breakaway. You might think a draw in Luxembourg is a disappointing result, but that's because we still think Ireland should be beating these so-called minnows. The harsh reality is that these teams are well organised these days by good coaches, and Hallgrimsson's job is to come up with a plan that gives us the best chance to qualify for major tournaments. He will be judged on the World Cup qualifiers in the latter half of this year, but at least we are not dreading watching Ireland matches any more and that is a big step forward.
