FBM KLCI opens slightly higher but drifts lower on profit-taking

The Star14-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI opened higher on relief over the trade war reprieve but quickly reversed course, drifting lower on profit-taking after yesterday's strong gains.
The market barometer fell 3.85 points, or 0.24%, to 1,578.54 at 9.09 am. The index opened 0.84 of a point higher at 1,582.39.
Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.64%, to 42,140.43, the S&P 500 gained 0.72%, to 5,886.55 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.61%, to 19,010.09.
On Bursa Malaysia, F&N rose 26 sen to RM26.86, DKSH added 26 sen to RM5.25, BLD Plantation gained 20 sen to RM11.20 and Malaysian Pacific Industries climbed 16 sen to RM21.14.
Conversely, Heineken fell 24 sen to RM27.30, CIMB declined nine sen to RM7.22, Ayer lost 10 sen to RM7.70 and Panasonic Manufacturing eased 10 sen to RM13.90.
Inter-Pacific Research said the key index may continue its upward trajectory as strong buying interest, especially from foreign funds, returns.
It said the positive momentum is also supported by improved global equity market sentiment, following signs of easing in the trade dispute between the U.S. and China.
However, the research house noted that some hesitation may emerge in the upcoming session, as recent strong gains have pushed technical indicators towards overbought levels.
At the same time, market participants are likely to remain cautious ahead of the 1Q2025 GDP data due this Friday, as they look for signs of how tariffs have affected the country's economic performance.
As such, it noted that any further upside may be more limited given the already toppish conditions, with potential bouts of profit-taking likely to slow the market's momentum.
'On the upside, the hurdles are now at 1,586-1,590 levels, which also corresponds to the 200-day moving average line that may serve as a significant resistance level.
'The other hurdle is at the psychological 1,600 level, while the supports are at the 1,575 points and 1,565 points respectively,' Inter-acific said.

Bursa opens higher, tracking Wall Street's overnight gains

KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia opened higher today, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street, as sentiment was boosted by the potential reversal of US President Donald Trump's tariff policy, which many view as a negotiation tool, said an analyst. At 9.08am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose by 3.27 points to 1,506.52 from Tuesday's close of 1,503.25. The benchmark index opened 3.85 points higher at 1,507.10. In the broader market, gainers led decliners 141 to 119, while 259 counters were unchanged, 1,820 untraded and 18 suspended. Turnover stood at 81.17 million units valued at RM40.27 million. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said, nonetheless, many were wary of the tariffs' effect on US economic data. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index (HSI) rebounded as sentiment was buoyed by the likelihood of a high-level discussion between China's President Xi Jinping and Trump to mitigate the ongoing trade tension. 'Whether this will take place remains to be seen, but expectations were rather hyped up,' he added. On the home front, the FBM KLCI on Tuesday continued its decline and at one moment, even broke the 1,500 psychological level. Nonetheless, selective bargain hunting managed to push the index back up to above the 1,500 mark. 'Overall, the market undertone is still weak. Hence, the directionless benchmark index is exacerbated by the persistent selling by foreign funds. 'For today, we expect the index to trend between the 1,500-1,510 points range again,' said Thong. Among the heavyweights, YTL Corporation gained 2.0 sen to RM1.82, PMetal rose 5.0 sen to RM5.00, Hong Leong Financial Group increased 16 sen to RM16.46, Petronas Chemicals grew 3.0 sen to RM3.31, and SD Guthrie rose 4.0 sen to RM4.55. Among active stocks, KNM eased half-a-sen to 3.0 sen, Avangaad was flat at 28 sen, Toyo Ventures added 1.5 sen to 38.5 sen, while SSF Home Group, PA Resources and Managepay Systems were flat at 36.5 sen, 18 sen, and 7.5 sen respectively. On the index board, the FBM Emas Index strengthened 20.89 points to 11,275.35, the FBMT 100 Index expanded 21.58 points to 11,044.30, but the FBM ACE Index slid 10.32 points to 4,471.49. The FBM Emas Shariah Index increased 29.68 points to 11,239.83, while the FBM 70 Index garnered 22.01 points to 16,164.17. Sector-wise, the Financial Services Index edged up 11.33 points to 17,773.96, the Industrial Products and Services Index was up 0.70 of-a-point to 150.78, the Energy Index climbed 0.88 of-a-point to 699.84, and the Plantation Index grew 14.45 points to 7,233.33.

Virgin Australia launches $442.8 million IPO, term sheet shows

A Virgin Australia Airlines plane is seen at Kingsford Smith International Airport in Sydney, Australia, March 21, 2020. REUTERS/Loren Elliott/File Photo BAIN Capital-owned Virgin Australia is looking to return to the stock market with a A$685 million ($442.78 million) initial public offering, according to a term sheet seen by Reuters on Wednesday. Bain will sell about 30% of the airline at a fixed price of A$2.90 per share, the term sheet said. Bain declined to comment on the plan. The private equity group will sell 236.2 million shares in the IPO to value the company at A$2.32 billion on a fully diluted basis, the term sheet showed. Bain's shareholding will drop from about 70% to 39.4% following the sale, while Qatar Airways will retain a 23% stake, according to the term sheet. Investors had lodged indicative bids before book building began that would cover the size of the deal, a bookrunner's message sent on Wednesday showed. Virgin will have an enterprise value of A$3.6 billion, taking into account its net debt of A$1.31 billion. The airline's IPO is one of the most closely watched deals in Australia in years because of its strong reliance on the country's consumer sector. Virgin has pared back its international business to concentrate mainly on domestic travel, but is due to resume some long-haul flights through its Qatar partnership. Virgin has a domestic market share of 34.4%, lagging its major rival Qantas which had 37.5% as of March, according to an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) report. The deal will be the largest IPO in Australia this year after DigiCo Infrastructure REIT raised A$2 billion in December. DigiCo's shares have traded down about 30% since its debut. Institutional bookbuilding will close on Thursday and Virgin's shares are due to start trading on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) on June 24, the term sheet showed. The IPO is being carried out through a front-end book building process, which means investor bids are taken ahead of the prospectus being reviewed and approved by Australian regulators. Virgin's IPO has been in the making for more than two years but was put on hold after investment banks were appointed due to volatile global financial markets during 2023. Bain bought Virgin for A$3.5 billion including liabilities five years ago after it was placed in voluntary administration, the closest Australian equivalent to Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Virgin collapsed in 2020 following tough COVID-19 restrictions that damaged the global airline industry. Australia's benchmark S&P/ASX200 index has gained 3.77% so far in 2025. - Reuters
