Manitowoc Hometown Hero thanks community for support

MANITOWOC, Wis. (WFRV) – Navy and law enforcement veteran Tom Traurig and his wife Linda are thanking the community for all their support after he suffered a spinal cord injury in April of 2023.
While veterans' benefits have secured his home care, the couple needed money to purchase a wheelchair-accessible van so he could get to specialists at the VA in Milwaukee more frequently than a ride service program could provide.

The Patriot Riders of Wisconsin Chapter 2 committed all the money from their annual chili competition.
The community responded in a way the non-profit group has never seen before.
The Traurigs were able to purchase a van, which is currently being transformed to accommodate his wheelchair and allow him to ride alongside his wife instead of having to sit in the back.
'I'm either gonna be walking by the end of this year or the beginning of next year,' Traurig said in a recent interview with Local 5 News. 'So many wonderful people have come into our lives since this happened and I can't thank them enough.'

According to the chapter's co-founder, Jenny Matte, the event raised $9,000. Thanks to an anonymous donor, the Patriot Riders were able to match that. Then, the VA, which initially said it could only pay for half of the van's conversion, said it would cover all the work to get it ready.
But that's not all.
'Besides everyone coming in to try the chilis, we received many checks and phone calls after the event,' said Matte. 'Just this past week, more donations have come in.'

The group will be handing over an additional $1,098 to the Traurigs.
'It's just a breath of fresh air,' said wife Linda. 'After this tragedy that happened to him, it's giving us some light. He's going to walk again.'

From New Orleans to Normandy: Honoring Louisiana's WWII heroes

As the nation remembers D-Day on Friday's 81st anniversary, a dwindling number of World War II veterans remain with us. About 300 WWII vets are still living in Louisiana, according to the latest figures from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The big picture: About 16.4 million Americans served in WWII, but only about 66,100 were still living as of September 2024, per the VA's projections. "We have the enormous responsibility to ensure that the memories and experiences of the war will not be lost as those who lived through it leave this world," said Stephen J. Watson, president and CEO of the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, in a statement. Zoom out: The museum is welcoming back WWII veterans as part of its commemoration events. It had an overnight display Thursday with 2,510 candle luminaria to honor the Americans who died on D-Day. At 6:30am Friday, there's a remembrance gathering to mark the moment the invasion of Normandy began. About 25 WWII veterans and Holocaust survivors will open the museum at 8:50am Friday to a hero's welcome. The main ceremony, which is also free, starts at 11am. Full list of events. Meanwhile, it's also the museum's 25th anniversary. The venue opened in 2000 as The National D-Day Museum. It was housed in a single exhibition hall and dedicated to telling the stories of the Americans who participated in the amphibious invasion. Today, the museum spans seven pavilions and has immersive exhibits and an expansive collection of artifacts. Fun fact: The Higgins boats used on D-Day were designed and built in New Orleans. Fewer than 10 original boats remain in existence. President Dwight D. Eisenhower called Andrew Higgins "the man who won the war for us" thanks to his namesake landing craft.

St. Joseph Backpack Food Assistance Program distributed nearly 43K meals to students

(WFRV) – The St. Joseph Backpack Food Assistance Program distributed nearly 43,000 meals to students in eight school districts for the 2024-2025 school year. Each meal contained eight ready-to-eat healthy meal items that students would take home with them over the weekend. The participating schools said that students felt less stressed when heading home. Registration open, date announced for 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Lambeau Field 'That program is for children from kindergarten through high school and so the teachers in each school determined what the best way to get that to the kids was but generally at the end of the week they would get that bag to take home and have something to eat,' said Monica Claire, St. Joseph Food Program Executive Director. Schools also reported that students in the program felt more ready to learn on Mondays. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
