No waiting for Tesla: India's homegrown electric vehicle path to a cleaner future

Air pollution is one of the most pressing problems facing India's urban population today. Among the many solutions proposed, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) stands out as both viable and urgent. With negligible greenhouse gas emissions during operation, electric vehicles can significantly reduce air pollution in cities, where vehicular emissions remain a major contributor to deteriorating air quality.
Critics argue that if the electricity used to charge EV batteries is generated from fossil fuels like coal or natural gas, then EVs will continue to contribute to carbon emissions—albeit indirectly. While this concern is not unfounded, lifecycle analyses of EVs have consistently shown that, even with current energy mixes, EVs emit far less greenhouse gases over their lifetime compared to internal combustion engine vehicles powered by petrol, diesel, or gas.
Moreover, it is important to recognize that while the manufacturing process of electric vehicles, particularly battery production, does cause some environmental impact, the net emissions over the vehicle's entire lifespan remain significantly lower than conventional vehicles. This becomes especially relevant in densely populated urban centers like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata, where air pollution has reached hazardous levels.
Why EVs Matter in Indian Cities
In India's overcrowded cities, the potential for electric vehicles to improve air quality and reduce health risks is immense. By transitioning from fossil fuel-based transport to electric mobility, these cities can become more liveable and sustainable. However, for electric mobility to be truly effective, a broader ecosystem must also evolve. This includes:
Generating electricity from renewable energy sources such as solar and windDeveloping a smart grid for efficient power distributionEstablishing environmentally sound battery manufacturing and recycling systems
If implemented effectively, this holistic approach could not only reduce emissions but also ensure that EVs contribute positively to India's long-term environmental and energy goals.
Simultaneously, India must pursue self-reliance in
electric vehicle
production. Relying solely on imports, particularly in a sector with high strategic value like automobile manufacturing, would be economically short-sighted and counterproductive to national interests. Strengthening the domestic
EV industry
will also stimulate job creation,
economic growth
, and technological advancement.
A Booming Market with Huge Potential
According to industry estimates, India's EV market could be worth $250 billion by 2030. The sector was valued at $1.45 billion in 2021 and grew to $3.21 billion in 2022. In a promising sign, India crossed the one million mark in EV sales last year, and this figure is expected to grow exponentially—reaching 17 million units annually by 2030, according to media reports and market projections.
Many Indian manufacturers are already responding to this demand. Leading companies like
Tata Motors
,
Mahindra & Mahindra
, and others have started offering electric versions of their most popular models. These vehicles are not only gaining traction among Indian consumers but are also competitively priced and better suited to local market conditions compared to their global counterparts.
Tesla's Entry: All Talk, No Action?
One of the most debated issues in India's EV discourse has been whether American EV giant Tesla would manufacture in India. For years, Tesla lobbied the Indian government for a reduction in import duties, arguing that it wanted to test Indian market conditions by importing cars before committing to local production. However, this tentative approach raised concerns about the company's real intentions.
It has now become apparent that Tesla is not interested in setting up manufacturing operations in India, at least for the foreseeable future. The Indian government, while announcing its new EV policy, implicitly acknowledged Tesla's lack of interest. Nevertheless, the policy itself reflects a forward-thinking approach: it seeks to incentivize domestic EV production while cautiously allowing limited imports.
Under the revised EV policy:
Manufacturers can import up to 8,000 electric cars per year at a reduced import duty of 15%.This concession is only applicable for EVs priced above $35,000.To qualify, companies must invest a minimum of ₹4,150 crore (approx. $500 million) in setting up a local production plant within three years.The total customs duty relief is capped at ₹6,484 crore, ensuring fiscal responsibility.
Additionally, a government portal will soon open for manufacturers to apply under the scheme, remaining active for at least 120 days. To qualify, companies must have:
A minimum of ₹10,000 crore in global revenue from vehicle manufacturing,At least ₹3,000 crore in fixed asset investment.
Both Indian and foreign companies are eligible, provided they meet these requirements. This policy is designed not only to attract investment but also to strengthen India's status as a global manufacturing hub, in alignment with the 'Make in India' mission.
Muted Interest from Global Players
Despite these incentives, global automakers—most notably Tesla and Chinese manufacturer BYD—have shown little enthusiasm. While Tesla has begun appointing dealers in India for its imported models, it remains non-committal about domestic manufacturing. BYD, on the other hand, has refrained from major investment due to India's security concerns related to Chinese companies, especially those in electronics.
Some experts suggest that other international automakers may still enter the Indian market. However, they face a steep uphill battle. Most of these companies have struggled to generate significant market share even in their home countries. Competing with dominant Indian players like
Tata and Mahindra
—who have a deep understanding of local demand and cost structures—will be even more challenging.
Economic Growth, Job Creation, and Public Health
Transitioning to electric mobility is not just an environmental necessity—it is also an economic opportunity. Various national studies have shown that clean energy and sustainability initiatives can generate both financial and social benefits, with EVs at the center of this transformation.
India's EV industry could generate up to 50 million jobs by 2030, spanning vehicle manufacturing, battery production, charging infrastructure, logistics, and maintenance services. Moreover, the sector could add substantial value to India's GDP, strengthen supply chains, and foster R&D in green technologies.
A major factor deterring foreign companies from investing in India is the cost efficiency of Indian manufacturers. Tata, Mahindra, and other domestic firms can produce EVs at prices ranging from ₹9 lakh to ₹20 lakh per unit, whereas companies like Tesla offer models priced ranging from ₹35 lakh to ₹80 lakh. With India's luxury car market still relatively small, high-end models do not offer the volume needed to justify large-scale production.
The case for promoting the Make in India electric vehicle ecosystem is compelling. With the right mix of policy incentives, domestic innovation, and infrastructure development, India can position itself as a global leader in electric mobility. EVs can be a cornerstone in solving India's urban air pollution crisis, while also delivering economic benefits in the form of jobs, investment, and technological advancement.
India does not need to wait for foreign giants to lead this transition. With capable and committed domestic players already driving the movement, the country can chart its own path—clean, competitive, and completely Made in India.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 7 (ANI): Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) began the first week of June on a weak note in the Indian stock market, with net investments staying in the negative territory. According to data released by NSDL, FPIs pulled out a total of ₹ 8,749 crore from Indian equities during the week from June 2 to June 6. This indicates that foreign investors were net sellers in the market during most of the week. The withdrawal came amid global uncertainties and cautious investor sentiment. However, a sharp turnaround was seen on Friday after the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) announced a surprise rate cut of 50 basis points. The repo rate was reduced to 5.5 per cent, which gave a strong push to investor confidence. Market experts believe that this aggressive rate cut will boost India's economic momentum and improve overall demand conditions. With inflation staying within the RBI's comfort zone and the central bank indicating a pro-growth stance, FPIs are expected to increase their investments in the coming months. Ajay Bagga Banking and Market expert told ANI "June first week saw roller coaster in terms of FPI flows. The trend is positive as a weak US dollar is inversely correlated to EM flows. With Indian macro showing strength and expectations of the 100 bps rate cuts providing a further boost to economic momentum and aggregate demand, FPIs will rank India as a top investment destination. Valuations are quoted as a constraint but we see the growth potential overriding these concerns eventually". Although high stock market valuations remain a concern, experts say that India's strong growth prospects may help overcome this challenge. The net foreign portfolio investment (FPI) inflows in May remained in positive and stood at ₹ 19,860 crore, making May the best-performing month so far this year in terms of foreign investment. In previous months' data also showed that FPIs had sold stocks worth ₹ 3,973 crore in March. In January and February, they had sold equities worth ₹ 78,027 crore and ₹ 34,574 crore, respectively. Indian stock market: Indian indices - Sensex and Nifty 50 - ended the week on a higher note for third week straight on RBI's policy announcement, which took the market by surprise. After remaining range-bound for most of the week, benchmark indices surged sharply on Friday and settled near the week's high, with the Nifty closing at 25,003 and the Sensex at 82,118.99. The sectoral performance was generally favorable, with rate-sensitive sectors experiencing robust buying activity. The rally was led by realty, automobile, and banking stocks, driven by optimistic expectations for credit growth and consumer confidence. Financials and NBFCs also saw gains, supported by the anticipation that lower interest rates will improve borrowing conditions. On the other hand, IT stocks lagged behind due to ongoing global uncertainties, especially in the U.S. and European markets. According to Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, Nifty has once again approached the upper band of its prevailing consolidation range of 24,500–25,100. ' A decisive breakout above 25,200 would mark the beginning of a fresh uptrend, with potential to gradually move toward the 25,600–25,800 zone. On the downside, the 24,400–24,600 range is expected to act as a strong support zone during any corrective phase,' Mishra said. Meanwhile, speaking on Bank Nifty outlook, Mishra said, ' The banking index has finally broken above the key 56,000 mark after trading in a tight range for over a month. We now expect it to move toward the 58,000 level, making this segment crucial for broader market direction. In case of a dip, the 55,350–56,000 range is likely to provide strong support.' Market analysts maintain a positive outlook on the markets fueled by RBI's rate cut. 'With the RBI's rate cut and dovish commentary acting as strong tailwinds, we maintain our positive outlook on the markets and suggest continuing with a 'buy on dips' strategy unless the Nifty decisively breaks below 24,600. However, investors should remain selective and focus on fundamentally strong stocks in sectors such as banking, auto, and real estate, which are poised to benefit from lower interest rates. Ottawa [Canada], June 7 (ANI): Former Member of Parliament of Canada, Chandra Arya, has said it would be his pleasure to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Canada for the G7 meeting from June 15 to 17, noting that India is an 'indispensable partner' and underlining the need for a deeper, structured bilateral relationship based on shared values like 'democracy', 'pluralism', and a 'rules-based international order'. In a post on X, Arya said, 'It would be my pleasure to welcome PM Narendra Modi to Canada for the G7 meeting during June 15-17. When I met PM Narendra Modi last July, I emphasised that Canada and India are united by shared values, democracy, pluralism, and a rules-based international order. India, an increasingly influential global actor with growing strategic, economic, and demographic weight, is an indispensable partner for Canada, both in the Indo-Pacific region and globally. It is in Canada's national economic, strategic, and geopolitical interest to forge a deeper, more structured relationship with India, one that spans trade, investment, policy, and civil society.' Earlier in the day, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that G7 countries will hold discussions on important issues, including security and energy, in their upcoming summit, adding that India's presence at the intergovernmental political and economic forum is essential. The effort seems a bid to thaw the frozen ties between the nations. Carney said that India, being the fifth largest economy and the most populous country in the world, must be at the seat. 'Let's put the two aspects in context- first is, we are in the role- Canada's in the role of the G7 chair and in those discussions as agreed with our G7 colleagues, include important discussions on energy, security, on digital future, critical minerals amongst others and partnerships actually in building infrastructure in the emerging and developing world,' he said. Carney said that India is central to a number of supply chains, which makes its presence pertinent at the G7 chair consultation. 'There are certain countries that should be at the table for those discussions, and in my capacity as G7 chair, I will consult with some others to make those determinations. India is the fifth largest economy in the world, effectively the most populous country in the world, central to a number of those supply chains at the heart of a number of those supply chains, so it makes sense,' he said. The announcement comes after a period of severely strained relations between the two countries, triggered by Canadian allegations that Indian agents were involved in the June 2023 assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar--a Canadian citizen and prominent pro-Khalistan activist--outside a Sikh temple in Vancouver, as per DW News. India strongly denied the claims, and both nations expelled senior diplomats in a tit-for-tat escalation, DW News reported. (ANI)
