Boxing cult hero Butterbean leaves fight fans distressed as he gets back in the ring aged 58 after losing 90kg

Daily Mail23-04-2025

American boxing icon Butterbean, real name Eric Esch, has sparked concern among fight fans after making an unlikely return to the ring at the age of 58 after losing an incredible 90kgs.
Butterbean, a former IBA super heavyweight champion, pro wrestling and kickboxing star, has gone on an incredible weight loss journey in recent years after revealing that he at one stage tipped the scales at 233kg (515 pounds).
He credited his remarkable transformation to working out with DDP Yoga, a program started by former WWE wrestler Diamond Dallas Page.
Butterbean last fought in 2013, when he took on against Kirk Lawton in Australia - injuring himself in the process.
The beloved heavyweight, who has decided to get back into combat sports, stepped into the ring last weekend to wrestle Minoru Suzuki in Las Vegas.
The wrestling legend clearly took it easy on Butterbean, who appeared to be struggling physically at times throughout the match.

Fans expressed alarm after seeing footage from the event.
'What the hell is going on,' posted one X user.
'Why was Butterbean wrestling,' demanded another.
Another fan referenced a Johnny Knoxville quote from Jackass: 'Is Butterbean ok?'
In 2022, Butterbean claimed that he was on the verge of a boxing comeback - and wasted no time in calling out YouTuber Jake Paul.
'I'm at fight weight. You'll have to listen to my podcast coming up to find exactly how much weight I have lost, but I haven't weighed this in over 20 years so that'll give you an idea,' he said.
'The big announcement is I'm gonna fight one last fight. It's gonna be one year from now. Jake Paul, if you're ready, I'm here for you my friend.
'Let's get it on, me and you Jake Paul.'
Butterbean issued a challenge to wrestling star Brock Lesnar in February, saying he is 'ready to come back' into the ring
In early 2025, the heavyweight icon issued a challenge to wrestling and UFC star Brock Lesnar.
Lesnar is the only man to have won the heavyweight championships in WWE, UFC and the NCAA.
'I'm going to do it one more time', Butterbean said.
'I would love to fight Brock Lesnar in a boxing match.
'He runs his mouth, he's a big guy, it would be a great fight and something that people would want to see'.
'It's going to be a real fight, not this grab the money and run thing. I don't want an exhibition, I want a real fight'.
'I just had a deal with the owner of energy drink company Lucky Energy, which are going to help make it happen'.

South West Sydney has scored a banging new spot serving ‘bloody good sandwiches'

Some people may say Sydney doesn't need another sandwich shop. We are not those people. So, say hello to San San – a funky new sandwich joint in Revesby, in Sydney's south west. Created by a sibling trio who says they 'couldn't find sandwiches in Sydney that hit the spot for us... so we made them ourselves', San San serves up loaded sandwiches featuring fluffy, freshly made focaccia, house-made sauces and quality ingredients. The succinct menu is made up of ten options, spanning deli meats, chicken schnitzel and vegan and vegetarian numbers. If it's your first time, a solid choice is the mortadella, which comes with fig jam, ricotta, hot honey, fresh rocket and potato crisps for crunch. We also like the sound of the OG schnitty, featuring golden chicken schnitzel paired with special San San sauce, butter lettuce, American cheese and pickled red onion. Or, for a flavour-packed veggie option, go for the eggplant with house-made baba ganoush (using a family recipe), marinated eggplant, roasted capsicum and a balsamic glaze. There's also a breakfast roll, chicken salad, focaccia pizza by the slice and chewy, gooey cookies. Plus, enjoy house-made lemonade and coffee using Ona beans. San San is open seven days a week – and you can dine in or take away.

US Open food and drink prices confirmed as fans fume at eye-watering costs

The US Open gets underway on Thursday, with Rory McIlroy bidding to win his second major of the year, but supporters' attention has been drawn to the price of the menu in Pennsylvania Golf fans have been left flabbergasted after the food and drink prices for the US Open were revealed. The third major of the year tees off on Thursday, with Rory McIlroy gunning for his second win of the year. McIlroy finally completed the career Grand Slam by triumphing in the Masters at Augusta back in April. The Northern Irishman will face competition from American Bryson DeChambeau, who is looking to retain his US Open title. ‌ A third man in the running is Scottie Scheffler, who won the PGA Championship in May and will tee off as the bookies' favourite in Pennsylvania. Upwards of 200,000 people expected to attend the event at Oakmont Country Club. ‌ And supporters have been left furious after the course's food and drinks menu was released. A Philly cheesesteak is the heftiest meal on the menu - costing $13.95 (£10.33) - while crisps are $3.49 (£2.58). A single Corona will cost $11.95 (£8.85), while even a bottle of water is $4.95 (£3.66). An 'All Beef Hotdog' will set fans back $7.59 (£5.63), while an 'Asiago Turkey Sandwich' will cost $12.25 (£9.08). The most expensive drink on the menu is also the 'Official Cocktail of the US Open' - a canned lemon wedge by Dewar's. That will cost $13.95 (10.34), the saw as a Black Cherry Seltzer. What really astonished fans though was the price of a banana, which will cost $1.95 (£1.44). One fumed: "$1.98 for a banana??? I'm taking my business elsewhere!" Another said: "$1.95 for a banana is outrageous." While a third added: "Menu prices seem disconnected from the average attendee's budget." ‌ A fourth raged: "$7.50 for a hot dog is ridiculous especially when they ran out yesterday. During the Monday practice round. Good luck this weekend." It's far cry from Augusta National and the Masters where patrons are still able to tuck into food and drink for very reasonable prices. Fans walking the famous course in Georgia were able to get a sandwich from as cheap as $1.50, while a beer was priced at just $6. McIlroy was victorious at Augusta, but has admitted being concerned about his form after missing the cut at the Canadian Open. The world No.2 shot a dismal second-round 78 last Friday, with McIlroy admitting he is struggling to turn things around. 'Of course it concerns me. You don't want to shoot high scores like the one I did today,' McIlroy said on the PGA website. 'I felt like I came here with a new driver thinking that was going to be good and solve some of the problems off the tee, but it didn't. 'Going to Oakmont next week, what you need to do more than anything else there is hit fairways. Still searching for the missing piece off the tee. When I get that part of the game clicking, then everything falls into place for me. Right now that isn't.'

Flight attendant explains why you should never swap seats on a flight

TikTok video creator and flight attendant Leanna Coy explained why she doesn't like to switch seats whens she is flying as a passenger, arguing that doing so is risky business A flight attendant has warned that seat switchers on planes are risking it all. Leanna Coy recently published a TikTok video titled ' Why you shouldn't switch seats on the plane' that explains exactly that. The commonly touted reason flight attendants typically tell off-seat switchers is that the plane's boarding plan is designed to put an even number of passengers on each side of the plane. ‌ Too many on one side, and the aircraft can be a little trickier for the pilot to fly. ‌ However, Leanna Coy has a whole different reason. The American flight attendant was recently asked to switch seats with a passenger on a United Airlines flight. "Normally, I am absolutely 100 per cent against changing seats. Your lack of planning should not constitute me having to move," Leanna explained. However, on this occasion, the flight attendant couldn't think of a good reason not to swap, so she obliged. She immediately began to have doubts about her decision. "I'm already on edge about it," she said. According to Leanna, if the person you've switched with does anything to "act up" on the plane, the behaviour would be associated with her seat number. That means any breach of the aircraft's rules, such as vaping in the bathroom or throwing snacks at fellow passengers, could wrongly be pinned on her. Leanna argued that such a thought was not as far-fetched as one might think. "I see what goes down on the plane. If this lady decides to go smoke in the bathroom or whatever, that could come back to me," the world-weary flight attendant explained. ‌ "I realised I'm flying United. If you know anything about United's service, if you want to buy drinks or anything, you have to put your card onto the app ahead of time, which I've done before." This means that the passenger who swapped with Leanna may be able to access her card to pay for items. The off-duty cabin crew member asked one of her colleagues if that was indeed the case, and they confirmed that it was. "'Now, do I think this lady was trying to scam me out of money on my card? No. But that's just something to be aware of. I fully support you if you don't want to switch seats. You are entitled to the seat that you chose," Leanna said. It is not a rare occurrence for chaos to break out on a flight or for passengers to indulge in a bit of bad behaviour. At the end of last year, a passenger caused chaos after allegedly attempting to open the emergency door mid-flight. The incident took place on a Copa Airlines flight on Tuesday night. Footage of the incident shows a man being restrained in a headlock while a crew member tried to attach plastic handcuffs to his wrists. Two passengers – Marcelo Ribeiro and Everaldo Torres – reportedly helped to restrain the man, according to local reports. Marcelo attempted to reason with the passenger when he noticed him trying to open the door, which ignited a brawl.
