O'Reilly hails Pep influence on positional switch

Yahoo09-05-2025

Nico O'Reilly says manager Pep Guardiola has been instrumental in helping him successfully switch to the left-back role for City - and is still mentoring him out on the training field.
O'Reilly came up through the Academy as a midfielder but Guardiola has now converted him to a defender.
He was used sparingly at the start of the season, making his senior debut in the Community Shield triumph over Manchester United before further appearances in the League Cup at home to Watford and away at Tottenham and a Champions League defeat of Sparta Prague at the Etihad.
The 20-year-old then took his chance to shine in the backline, scoring in the FA Cup victory over Salford and he hasn't looked back since.
He's excelled in that competition - scoring two vital goals in the comeback fifth round victory over Plymouth as well as setting up both goals in the 2-1 away success over Bournemouth in the quarter-finals.
The likeable starlet also picked up the Etihad Player of the Month for April after bagging his first Premier League goal in the 5-2 win over Crystal Palace before following it up with another in the vital 2-0 away triumph at Everton.
He's thrilled with how far he's come and insists the boss continues to guide him in training to make him even better at the left-back role.
'I just remember one session I was put there because I think we had just one centre-back in training,' he said.
'Everyone was injured and we just needed players in training to go there.
'It must have been two days later in the Salford game where I went left-back and it just came from there. I trusted what the manager thought.
'If I get something wrong in training positionally, Pep will stop it, go through it with me and let me know what I need to do.
'That has helped me a lot. Also speaking to the likes of Josko who has been playing there all season, he has helped me a lot because he has been next to me every game and always talking to me.
'I think the staff, Josko and Ruben have helped. Ruben is a big leader in the team and he leads the back line, so I am always listening to his information.
'I had to get used to the defending side as well because being in the back line was not something I was used to.
'As it has gone on, I have learnt a lot and still have got a lot to learn as well.
'I have enjoyed it and it's good to have a bit of versatility.
'Obviously with my size and my physicality to get up and down the wing, it does suit me.
'I think the way we have been playing tactically has benefited me in that way, to get in those positions.'
This weekend he will hope to add to his tally of 17 appearances as we face Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday.
City are clicking through the gears in our Champions League qualification chase while the Saints have had a tough campaign as they get set for a return to the Championship next term.
Despite that, O'Reilly insists City will be showing them the respect they deserve in the 15:00 (UK) kick-off.
'It is a tough game even though they are already relegated and bottom of the league,' he said.
'They are still a Premier League side. No game in the Premier League is easy and we know what to expect.
'We're not underestimating them in any way and we're going to give it our all.
'I remember the home game. The way they played, I didn't expect it really. We know it is going to be a tough game, so we need to prepare for it.'

Anderson stars but Northants stay unbeaten in Blast

James Anderson delivered a second three-wicket haul of his T20 Blast return for Lancashire but it was not enough to stop Northants Steelbacks making it five wins from five to tighten their grip on the top of North Group. The veteran seamer's 3-31 at a blustery Old Trafford backed up his 3-17 against Durham at Chester-le-Street. Advertisement But the 42-year-old's sterling efforts could not prevent the Steelbacks totalling 180-6 before restricting Lancashire to 156-9 in reply. Liam Livingstone's return to Lightning colours following his IPL victory with Royal Challengers Bangalore saw him take 2-35 and add 18 with the bat as Northants always had the game under their control. George Scrimshaw was the pick of their bowlers with an impressive 4-19. Match scorecards North Group – Malan fireworks & Ali hat-trick Yorkshire climbed off the bottom of the North Group table after posting a first victory of their T20 Blast campaign, beating Leicestershire Foxes by a thumping margin of 106 runs. Advertisement Dawid Malan (88 from 48 balls) and Will Luxton (62 from 34) put on 132 for the second wicket and, despite a mini-collapse which saw five wickets go for 31 runs, Yorkshire posted a towering total of 213-7 in their 20 overs. Former England batter Malan passed 10,000 T20 runs in the process. The Foxes were never really in the hunt with spin doing the damage, Jafer Chohan taking 4-27 and Dom Bess 2-25. Victory moved Yorkshire into seventh place in the table with their first win at the fourth attempt. Advertisement A half-century from New Zealand opener Tom Latham (58 from 42 balls) helped put Bears in a commanding position at the halfway mark after posting 199-6. Fynn Hudson-Prentice marked his Derbyshire return with a wicket after signing a four-match loan deal from Sussex and Pat Brown was the pick with the ball for the visitors with 3-40. But both ended on the losing side as a chase of 200 proved beyond them after a disastrous start which saw them 1-2 after the first seven deliveries and they were bowled out for 141. Pakistan seamer Ali dismissed Ross Whiteley, Alex Thomson and Ben Aitchison in the 16th over for his hat-trick to claim Bears' best-ever bowling figures in the T20 Blast. South Group – Spitfires overpower Hampshire Hawks England opener Zak Crawley starred as Hampshire Hawks had their winning streak brought to an abrupt halt at the hands of Kent Spitfires who chased down a target of 178 to win by eight wickets. Advertisement Tom Rogers (3-33) gave Kent a lightning start with the ball helping to reduce Hampshire to 29-3 but Joe Weatherley's 63 from 46 balls and contributions lower down the order from Dewald Brevis (24), James Fuller (27) and Benny Howell (23) helped the visitors to 177-7. But after Daniel Bell-Drummond (61) and Kent skipper Crawley (75 not out from 43 balls) shared a superb 110 run partnership for the second wicket, those defences were never enough. Defeat for Hampshire was not enough to dislodge them from the top of the south group table after four rounds of action with James Vince's side on 12 points. Tom Helm continued his remarkably consistent Blast campaign as Middlesex finally got their South Group campaign off the ground with a six wicket win over Essex at Chelmsford. Advertisement The Middlesex seamer posted 4-32 from his four overs as the home side were restricted to 156-9, Simon Harmer's 28-ball 41 lifting them after a disappointing batting display. Helm's contribution followed up his 3-29 and 3-29 in his previous two games against Kent and Glamorgan. The result was never in much doubt after Middlesex skipper Stephen Eskinazi (72) and Kane Williamson (31) put on 97 for the first wicket. Middlesex's victory, their first of the season at the fourth attempt, left Essex still looking for a first win after four attempts and rooted to the bottom of the table. At Hove James Coles continued his outstanding form with the bat and Nathan McAndrew dismantled Glamorgan with the ball as Sussex Sharks downed the Welsh side. Advertisement Coles is averaging 98 in the Blast after four innings and his innings of 75 not out was the high point of an excellent display from the hosts with the bat. Tom Alsop also reached a half-century in 27 balls with five sixes as Sussex posted 195-4. McAndrew then set about Glamorgan with the ball taking 5-19 in his four overs as Sussex won by 78 runs. Victory was secured with two wickets in two balls for Tymal Mills as the Sussex captain became the fifth player to reach 300 T20 wickets. It put his side second with three wins from four and level on 12 points with leaders Hampshire and third-placed Somerset. It feels like we're a group of mates – Skipper Harry Brook hails England unity

England captain Harry Brook praised the unity of his 'group of mates' after sealing his second series win in just 11 days in charge. Brook has won five on the bounce against the West Indies since taking over from Jos Buttler, sweeping the tourists 3-0 in the ODI leg and going 2-0 up with one to play in the T20s. Advertisement England did not have it easy in Sunday's four-wicket win at Bristol, with the asking rate climbing past 11 an over at one stage as they chased down a stiff target of 197. But they stuck together to get over the line, with five of their top six making handy contributions before Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton took the bull by the horns. The middle-order duo hammered 56 off just 21 deliveries between them to puncture the West Indian resistance and keep the good times rolling for Brook. It was the kind of game England were losing in the difficult final days under Buttler, whose reign ended with eight straight defeats across both formats. Advertisement But there is a new lighter feeling around the group – including the newly liberated former skipper, who has top-scored with 96 and 47 in the last two games. 'It feels like we're a group of mates. We're just going out and having fun,' said Brook. 'It's been nice for me. The results are awesome and we're really enjoying it. We're having a good time out there. England's Brydon Carse and Tom Banton celebrate victory (Nigel French/PA) 'At the end of games we go around the circle and Baz (head coach Brendon McCullum) asks if anybody has anything to say. In every game so far someone has stood up and said something. I think that's a great way of showing how the team is at the minute and we feel a proper togetherness.' Advertisement The West Indies made England sweat at times, taking 82 off their last five overs including an unexpected tirade against Adil Rashid in the 19th. For so long the team's most bankable bowler, the leg-spinner shipped five sixes and 31 runs in what goes down as the second most expensive over by an English bowler in T20s. Stuart Broad holds the unwanted record of 36, taken for six off every ball by Yuvraj Singh at the 2007 World Cup. Brook, though, insists he and his team were never rattled. 'I'm always very chilled. We knew that there was going to be one, two, maybe three big overs,' he said. 'On a pitch that size, with 60-metre boundaries nearly all the way around, we accepted that before the game and we knew we could get big overs as well. Advertisement 'The way Bants went about his business, getting 30 off 11 balls having never really batted in the middle order before was just awesome.' The West Indies have one more chance to avoid a winless tour in Southampton on Tuesday but head coach Daren Sammy paid tribute to Akeal Hosein, who took the field just six hours after arriving from the Caribbean following visa delays. 'He said to me, 'there's no way I'm not playing',' Sammy explained. 'Kudos to him, he turned up for us. An eight-hour flight straight into a game is not ideal but it shows his commitment.'

In pictures: Tour of Britain takes to the streets of Glasgow

Hundreds of spectators lined the streets of Glasgow to watch Lorena Wiebes of the Netherlands win the fourth and final stage of the Women's Tour of Britain. Ally Wollaston of New Zealand sealed overall victory by finishing third and taking bonus seconds to push overnight leader, Britain's Cat Ferguson, into second place. Speaking about her stage victory, Lorena Wiebes said: "It was a tough race - with a city centre, all the time you have to push the power. "The team did a really good job to keep me safe in the front. "For me, it was perfect towards the finish as I could do the sprint as I wanted to." Wollaston denies GB's Ferguson to win Tour of Britain
